Transcription CORPS SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS
THE combined individual/team championships were held in
the Aldershot Military Baths. Although exercise commitments
caused some last minute cancellations participation was slightly

HOCKEY
ONCE again September saw the start of the hockey season.
The trials, incorporated with the annual fixture against the
Staff College, proved successful. Due to exercise commit-
ments, the number of players attending the trials did not come
up to expectations* though there were amongst the old faith-
fuls a refreshing number of new young faces. A disturbing
factor of recent seasons has been the lack of young players
coming forward, without whom the Corps successes of recent
years cannot be continued.
Against Staff College the 'A' side took a while to settle
down, during which the defence was hard pressed to keep the
opposition out. However, a rhythm began to appear and
from a set piece free kick on the edge of the penalty area,
Lance Corporal Griffin in the usual role of left-wing, con-
verted through a superbly taken ball into the roof of the
net, from an acute angle. The second-half saw Rosser back
in his old form, finding the net and putting the final result
beyond doubt.
This proved to be only a foretaste of the games to come.
RAPC always provide tough opposition and this year was no
exception, a score line of six to four to the RAPC must give
the readers an indication of the pace of the game. Credit
must be given to the well drilled Pay side in steadily building
a commanding five to one lead, our one goal coming through
Major David Hourahane; Yet the Corps side fought back
very well and never showed signs of becoming dispirited.
The revival was sparked by moving Corporal Peter Rosser
from Inner to Centre Forward, resulting in two goals from
Rosser and a second from Hourahane. The next ten minutes
were very tense until Pay put the result beyond doubt by
scoring the sixth goal in the final minutes.

MR CHARLES HENRY WOODWARD
MR C. H, (CHICK) WOODWARD, the CivUian Accommodation
Services Officer at ASU Bielefeld, died suddenly at his married
quarter in Bielefeld on 30th September.
Chick's service to HM Forces began in 1942 when he
joined the RAF. He later transferred to the Army, serving with
the East Yorkshire Regiment and then the Green Howards, from
which he retired as a Warrant Officer.
In 1967 he became a BIA at Catterick and following pro-
motion to Civilian Assistant Barrack Officer, spent four years
in Northern Ireland before taking up his appointment in
Bielefeld earlier this year
His death came as a great shock and sadness not only to bis
family but to the many friends and colleagues among whom he
was universally popular and respected. At a moving funeral
service in the Bielefeld Garrison Church, Padre Christopher
Ward, who had known Chick and his family for a number of
years, paid tribute to his humanity, his friendliness and com-
passion and his willingness always to help anyone in trouble.
He will be greatly missed*
To his wife Helen and daughters Myrtle and Maureen we
send our sincere condolences.
