HEADQUARTERS
S MAN I. After an absence of two
months, S Man 1 returns to the
columns of THE GAZETTE.
Vivacious, as they say in the
society columns, Miss Julie Stewart
was married recently and has changed
her surname to Norman. A party was
held at which Colonel X. A. Turner, Col S Man 1, presented a
small wedding present on behalf of the branch. We all wish her
and her husband the best of fortune for the future. It is hoped
that marital strife can be avoided in arguments as to whether
or not the Normans precede the Stewarts 1
We welcome Mrs Yvonne Williams to S Man la(2) in place
of Mrs Phil Smale who has left us for the Procurement Executive
in London. Mrs Williams has taken to her job with great
enthusiasm and is reputed to make a better cup of coffee than
Captain Lyons—a claim he strenuously denies.
We wish Mrs Gloria Horsnell a speedy recovery after her
recent operation. But is it possible that mass S Man 1 visits
to the hospital in the lunch hour have been the cause of the
recent industrial confusion in the National Health Service?
In passing, we should mention that W02 McKee's posting
to Cyprus still stands, Captain Dexter is still attempting to get
time off for a sports afternoon—perhaps Mr McKee can render
valuable advice in this matter! Major Collings awaits his relief
with curiosity, as at least one nominee for the appointment has
resigned rather than face life in the basement at LE(A) An-
dover. Major Coote, despite his frequent visits to Luxembourg,
denies that he is a secret officiando at the well known commercial
radio station located there,
S MAN 2. Much comings and goings in the S Man world
with the departures of Major Pat Wall on deportation to
Australia, Major Tony Ward to 1 (Br) Corps and Major
Andrew Roseveare to civilian life. We welcome in their place
Majors Brian Mills and David Hudson and sadly as yet, no
replacement for Andrew.
Captain Mike Noblett, on return from a duty visit to
Antwerp and BAOR the trip being made both ways by LSL,
decided that a life on the ocean waves should have been his
true vocation; perhaps the hospitality of the wardroom bar
had a bearing?
TECHNICAL EQUIPMENTS DIVISION
FIRSTLY congratulations to W02 Buxton on the award of
his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal. Also welcome to
Staff Sergeant Williams and family from Belize—we are opening
a good human exchange trade with Belize these days. Our
sorrows to Sergeant Saxon whose complaints at extra mess
duties are not receiving sympathy—he's running their bar for
the while. Congratulations to Captain Veal on appointment
to OEO and on catching a tench from Trench on his first time
fishing exploit Jet setter Major Morton's latest trip was by
RAF Nimrod to the Azores, he's still upset at not making
Gibraltar in September breaking a long run of monthly
sojourns abroad.
Canoeing is now catching on and latest
recruits include Colonel Holdsworth—he's even coming back for
more—and Lieutenant Colonel Gentle—watch out Andover. Staff
Sergeant Swales has just spent a duty-free fortnight in BAOR—
even in DSM you can travel. Staff Sergeant Hamilton is
preparing his winter woollies, or at least the civilian staff are
knitting them for him, pending his posting to Benbecula,
Even more congratulations, this time to Corporal Earthy
and Corporal York WRAC, they've announced their engage-
ment.

Captain Roberts was a member of the victorious Donning-
ton swimming team who have just won the Corps swimming team
championships. He .did train hard for it or so he says. We
haven't received the results of the Exercise Point West Motor
Rally but believe Staff Sergeant Dalton did extremely well—
details next month. Captain Curtis and Mrs Elaine Parton
have just spent three days at Deepcut learning about staff duties
(possible replacement here as GAZETTE scribe?). Sighs of relief
emanate from Engineers Branch with Lieutenant Colonel Camfield
finally completing his stint as Officers Mess PMC, perhaps
he'll be back to work full time now. Lieutenant Colonel
Hodder has at last sampled a dinner night, English style, his
briefing confused him even more, but he survived, STOP
PRESS. More congratulations—this time to Staff Sergeant
Dalton (again), on his marriage to Miss Gloria Discala just a
few days ago in Wellington. More next month.

DSCS is now well established in Bicester Garrison, and we are
well settled into our, good as new, well appointed accom-
modation.
The 1st September saw all our WOs and SNCOs less,
unfortunately, our WRAC members, becoming part of the
Graven Hill Station Sergeants Mess.
The seniors soon made their mark in the mess, when seven
members of DSCS were presented with their well earned Long
Service and Good Conduct Medals by the Director, Brigadier
Lawrence.
Pictured from left to right after the Long Service and Good
Conduct Medal presentations at DSCS Bicester: W 2 Tony
Roberts, W 2 Mike Tuff, W O ! Graham Hartley, Brigadier
Lawrence. W O l Sam Weller, WO? Brian Coolin, W 2 John
CoUison and W O l Alan Griffin.
August saw the departure of Mr Jack Bland who has been
connected with the Corps since he first joined the Planning
Branch of COD Chilwell in 1948 as a clerical officer. In 1958
he moved into ADP at Chilwell and later to Belgium and
Germany where he was concerned with Ordnance accounts,
In 1966 he returned to ADP duties in Bicester where he
remained until 1977 rising to be Chief Programmer. He moved
then to Didcot and was employed on Project Management 5
System 3. He returned to Bicester with the remainder of p S C
in early 1978 and has now taken up an appointment in the
Directorate of Internal Audit as a Principal.
We offer our congratulations on his promotion and the best
of fortune in his new appointment.
