Despite what seems to be a deserted atmosphere the prodi- ; C ; , undertaking to close the Depot proceeds at near fever pitch •ch.-^A the scenes. Wu have still found time for tribal gatherings when we )a y tribute to comrades who have achieved some form of ;ervwe distinction. Our latest citations were both for members rf REME and we were particularly delighted that Colonel Edwards could be present to preside over the ceremony which tfould probably be one of the last such occasions in our sergeants Mess. The recipients were WOl Miles who was awarded the GOCs commendation for service in Northern Ireland an d Sergeant Siggs who had qualified for the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal. It was particularly gratifying to see that both parents and im-.vtfdiate families had gathered to witness what proved to be a vjry warm hearted and impressive ceremony. It was also a good opportunity to record our appreciation for the excellent support we have always received from our sister Corps. Arrivals: W02 Stewart. Births: Lance Corporal Clarke (ACQ—a son Raymond Alan. Promotions: Sergeants Schiller and Adamson to Substantive Staff Sergeant, Sergeant William to Acting Staff Sergeant, and Private Chaloner (ACQ to Substantive Lance Corporal, Wulfen Station TRAFALGAR SQUARE during rush hour has nothing on this Station in the last month. What a month! It started with an invasion by the TAVR. We were visited by and played host to so many that the MSO at the Guard Room thought ITVs New Faces had moved to Wulfen. We were invited to participate in the Wulfen Week by the Town authorities. We played a soccer match against Wulfen, which we lost five to two after a very good match. Our scorer was Lance Corporal John Ballard. The band of the Royal Hampshire Regiment played in a band festival; families joined in both events and the Anglo- German relations took yet another step forward. WATS: the Wulfen Amateur Theatrical Society meet every Monday evening for play reading. We are hoping to ?-.:: on a play in spring 1979. David Pettigrew the gallant pro- ducer of the last play, My Three Angels, may settle—without apprehension!—for a comedy in two acts; in which Colonel Ryan changes sex!—We know the boss has a good sense of humour and will attend as guest of honour—of course! I will keep you informed. On the sport side, the rugby team, the Wulfen Casuals, played Dusseldorf Dragons seconds last Saturday. It proved a superb game and even the weather turned out at its best. We won by twenty nine to four and everyone played so well that it would be difficult to pick the outstanding player. Un- fortunately, young Trevor Horn injured his back and is still facing the ceiling somewhere in Munster. Then came the Station six-a-side soccer; this saw young and old alike exhibiting their limbs in superb Sunday sunshine. The day was well at- tended and the honours went to the ATO department with the Ammo Wing in second place. The next gathering is a six-a- side hockey competition, and this time the ladies are also enter- ing a team. Well, must dash. Two van loads of Dutch, German and British soldiers have just debarked and are looking for * Der rj*ce ort!' for their exercise in a couple of weeks from now, 154 FAD WHAT a hectic week- Mob Exercised; Regimental Train- ing; Escape and Evasion Exercise, plus trying to get settled in at the new job. BFT took place this morning and most passed (passed out?). The odd failures and the Ammunition Officer, (he's fit really! but pressure of work kept him away. That's one t^er for the Station Chief Clerk for those few kind words!), w:Ii take it again next week. This afternoon saw the begin- K.ri% of our last event of the Mob Exercise week. Six teams will comr>ete on Exercise Quick Getaway a map reading and initiative test; this finished in the early hours of the morn- ing. Tod Slaughter, our new Station Sergeant Major, organised Jt all, and apart from getting lost himself, made it go with a swing. On the Miliskills, Sergeant Fielding proved that a one man raft was not suitable for two and went swimming in the fishing pond. My predecessor said it was a nice quiet posting! We have had two Long Service and Good Conduct Medal presentations this month. The first was to Sergeant Dave Grove, who also incidentally is now qualified as a MHE in- structor, congratulations Dave, and the second to our REME Sergeant Bob Berry. The latter presented by the Quarter- Master-General, General Sir Patrick Howard-Dobson. I'm afraid the celebrations continued into the small hours and some Mess Members were not allowed out on the following night for farewell drinkies with the outgoing Chief Clerk, Sergeant Pete Lee. By the way Pete, congratulations on your promotion to Staff Sergeant. We welcome Sergeant Mick Shaw from 10 Ordnance Sup- port Battalion to the fold as the new Chief Clerk. Congratulations also to Private Campbell on his promotion to acting Lance Corporal, We welcome back Mrs Forrest and family from the UK. FVD RECKLINGHAUSEN CLOSE encounters of the sporting kind this month for the active Forward Vehicle Depot sportsmen. The six-a-side soccer team started off with a third position in the Wulfen Station six-a-side competition. Obviously the goal scoring abilities of Corporal Keith Tomlinson and Lance Corporal Kenny Burns were too much for all oncoming op- position. Another major factor in their short lived success was the undaunting skills and attire of the 'A' Team captain Private John Carroll. Even better results came from the Unit medal hunters, who trogged around the fifteen kilometre course in the AFCENT Marches, Cries of anyone for a ' Silk Cut * were heard on their triumphant return. This cry proved to be an expensive one for Major L Ray Holland who was the sad owner of once a full pack of Silk Cut/ Major Ray Holland and Captain Brian Crawley were the welcome guests of the Caritasverband handicapped childrens home presentation, where Major Holland handed over a size- able cheque (DM3500), which the Unit raised from the Tag der Often Tur earlier this year. Major Holland hands over the proceeds of the Unit Open Day {DM 3 5 : £850) to the Supervisor of the Caritasverband Handi- capped Children's Kindergarten. Captain Crawley and Herr Happe, the Director of Caritasverband Recklinghausen, also attended the presentation. We welcome to Recklinghausen, the new CSM, W02 Stu Brierley and Private Graham and Mrs Markham and wish them all the best with their stay with the Forward Vehicle Depot. — 255 — MAKE SURE THAT YOUR NEWSLETTER ARRIVES ON TIME THE 28th OF THE MONTH |
