IN recent weeks the unit has seen much activity in preparation
for Ex Picot which commences later in April. A large quantity
of palletised loads to simulate stocks has been manufactured.
A section of the Pet PI from West Moors spent a few days here
drawing equipment and generally preparing for the exercise.
Our 2IC. Major E, C. Goodson, is to be OC Combat Sups
Coy. and he has been extremely active moulding his unit, the
staff of which has been drawn from many units here in FARELF
and the UK.
A party, commanded by Capt. Mohamed Bin Abdul
Rahman, assisted by SQMS Baverstock, left on 16th March
for an adventure training trip by assault boat down the east
coast of Malaysia. Owing to unfavourable weather and strong
sea currents the trip had to be abandoned after a few days, but,
nevertheless, all who took part enjoyed what turned out to be
a rather damp experience.

The enclosed photograph shows Mr. C. R. Menon, one of
our Barrack Accountants, receiving the C-in-C's Testimonial
from Major General D. N. H. Tyacke, GOC Singapore District.
Mr Menon enlisted in the Indian Army Medical Corps as a
Havildar Clerk in August 1942 and left the Army in 1947,
at which time he joined 4 SPRD as a civilian clerk, He served
there until 1963 when he was promoted Barrack Accountant
and posted to this unit.
This month we say farwell to Sgt. Page and his family
who have left us for Perham Down and welcome Sgt. Brown
and his family from Germany.

On 27th March a unit team of Officers and Corporals
played cricket against the Senior Ranks for the Pittman Cup.
This is a twice-yearly challenge, and the Senior Ranks, who
were cup holders, were beaten decisively. Our photograph shows
Sgt. Hoey, the losing captain, handing over the Cup to Capt.
J. T. Underwood. A challenge football match, of fifteen minutes
each way was taken up by the Officers after the cricket match.
The Officers lost this game, but only by two (disputed) goals!
On 6th April most unit members and their wives gathered
in the badminton hall for a farewell party for SQMS and Mrs.
R. J. Walsh, SQMS and Mrs. W. Higgins and S/Sgt and Mrs.
W. S. Simons. We wish each departing family success and
happy times in their new locations.
Arrivals; S/Sgt. Boilers, L/Cpls, Hill and Lancaster and
families.
Departures: SQMS Walsh, S/Sgt. Simons, SQMS Higgins
and families, Cpl. Slater, Sgt. Brannan and Cpl. Croft and
family.
BARRACK
SERVICES (SOUTH): If variety is the spice of
life, then our lives are certainly spicy; no two days are ever
the same for us. We are now faced with the problem of what
to do with the furniture from 189 flats which are being con-
verted from hirings into a luxury hotel. Suggestions are not
required!
IN the last newsletter we reported that Sgt. Collins and his
band of firemen were practising with kit they had not yel got.
This month it gives us pleasure to report that they have now
been supplied with all their needs and were able to prove to
the Commanding Officer they could extinguish three large oil
fires within the space of 90 seconds. The lads on Ex Phot
should come back without being burnt alive.
This month we have had the pleasure of a visit from the
DOS of the Australian Army, Brigadier E. C. Lord. His arrival
brought into use our new helipad and raised the blood pressure
of the OIC Gen Admin, Major Douglas. It would seem that
there is a sporting chance of incoming helicopters ricocheting
ofl the petrol pump. Ord 10 please note! We hasten to add
that the AAC have passed it as entirely acceptable.
Exercises this month include Cold Comfort IX and Pleat.
The former, an IS exercise, took place on 4th Aprrt and in some
respects made April Fool's Day three days late this year. The
latter is currently in progress and the news from the advance
party rigorously exercising in Singapore is, "Are there any spare
packs of playing cards?"
The smallbore club is losing two of its most ardent sup-
porters in the form of RSM and Mrs, Gosling, who are shortly
off to UK en route for BAOR. On 10th April the club held a
farewell party and presented RSM and Mrs. Gosling with a
clock as a token of their past efforts on behalf of the club. To
all 17 RVD readers may we point out that your new RSM is
time-conscious.
The Sergeants' Mess held a regimental dinner night on 11th
April to dine in our new CO, Lt.-Colonel J. A. Bartels, and to
dine out RSM Gosling. After dinner the Officers and WOs
took on the S/Sgts, and Sgts. at indoor games and the outcome
is still a matter for conjecture. One thing that all Senior Ranks
in the Depot now appreciate is the difference between divine
right and divine left,
All those who have served in 221 may be interested to
know that, owing to a recent outbreak of cholera in Singapore,
the average crossing time for the Causeway is now anything up
to thirty-five minutes, combined with a permutation of one
document in any three, once you reach the controls on the
Johore side!
Postings in: RSM Carr, Sgt. Hesketh, Cpls. Rowbottom and
Sennett (RE),
Postings out: S/Sgt. Whitington. Cpls. Hobson and Turner
(RE), L/Cpls. Davies and Yates and Pte. Brown.
Births: A son, Michael Andrew Robert, to Cpl. and Mrs.
Mc'Crea on 27th March.
