DESPITE the financial freeze on Sporting Events the Army
Inter-Corps Hockey Tournament was played at Aldershot.
RAOC, who have always had a good run in the com-
petition, fielded a strong team for the event. The results were as
follows: —

The Corps Tombola Stall was erected at Chelsea Barracks
on 25th November by Major George Hodgson and his staff from
Deepcut and a very attractive array of prizes was laid out and
numbered by Mrs Brown, Mrs Short, Mrs Camfield and Mrs
Curtis. HRH Prince and Princess Michael of Kent visited the
Market for a preview that evening and Mrs Brown and Lady
Hildreth were presented to them.
As our photographs show the stall was manned on the day
by many willing volunteers. Thanks to their hard work the last
tombola ticket was sold at 3 pm, resulting in a considerable
addition to the Corps' contribution to the SSAFA Appeal 1980.
In all £5,816.73 was handed over to SSAFA, made up as
follows: —
RAOC six, RAC nil.
The initial game of the tournament during which the RAOC
settled down quickly and played some positive flowing hockey.
The Corps were soon on the scoresheet with a fine goal by Jubb.
By half time the score was three nil the other goals being scored
by Smith and Sumner.
The match- was not as one sided as the score might suggest.
the RAC producing some fine attacking hockey which kept the
RAOC backs and keeper busy for a while. Harcourt scored from
a penalty corner and other goals came from Sumner and Smith.
RAOC four, REME one.
The game sailed off very fast with the REME pressing the
RAOC goal early on. A breakaway goal by Sumner put the
RAOC into the lead and the score stayed one nil until half
time. During the second half the Corps played some excellent
hockey, goals coming from Sumner, Jubb and Smith.
£5,816.73
RAOC one, R. Signals two.
A game which started off very well for RAOC with a
quick goal by Sumner. Signals soon retaliated and by half time
the score was one one. In the second half the Corps was awarded
a penalty flick but failed to score unlike Signals who had the
same opportunity and scored. During the game a lot of missed
opportunities occurred particularly in the taking of penalty
corners.
This was a magnificent effort by everyone concerned and
Mrs Brown and her Committee would like to thank those
members of the Corps and their families who contributed both
with cash and with prizes and whose generosity made the RAOC
contribution such an outstanding success.
RAOC nil, RA nil.
This undoubtedly was the best game of the tournament for
the Corps. A very strong RA team came very close to scoring
on several occasions but didn't quite manage to put the ball in
the net. After the game the umpires congratulated both teams
on the way the game had been played.
Have we won?
Mrs Newcombe and Mrs Lawrence check the tickets.
RAOC one, ACC two.
This was the game which put the Corps side out of the
tournament. The team never recovered from an early goal by the
ACC and although Bunting scored near half time the rather
weary RAOC players were unable to stop the ACC from scoring
again.
The following personnel played for the RAOC during the
tournament:—Captains Eccles, Harcourt, Wilberforce and Wise,
Lieutenant Parry, W02 Barnes, Staff Sergeants Townsend, Kerr,
Bailey and Holmes, Sergeants Fullager and Sumner, Corporals
Bunting and Gatley, Lance Corporals Jubb, Griffen and Smith.
Fixtures for 1981: Despite the moratorium it is hoped to
play the fixtures during 1981 which are as follows:—21st
January v RMCS at Shrivenham; 4th February v RM at Poole:
18th February v RE at Chatham; 5th March v RAMC/RADC
at Aldershot; 6th March v R. Signals at Blandford; 11th March
v RCT at AJdershot; 18th March v RMAS at Camberley; 25th
March v REME at Arborfield; 1st April v Staff College at
Blackdown.
The Chairman of Corps Hockey Colonel R. D. Richardson
is anxious that as many games as possible should be played.
Travelling expenses will be reimbursed as far as possible to
enable players to reach the venues concerned with the minimum
cost to themselves.
Bari Cup 1981: The annual inter-unit festival is scheduled
to be played at Blackdown on 26fh/27th March 1981 and it is
hoped that this will still take place. Details concerning the
competition will be forwarded to units in due course.
