CONTROL
DIVISION
COLONEL TED SHEPHARD has now departed to South
East District, his place at DSM(A) has been taken by Colonel
Dick Owen.
After months of hard work clearing bushes and under-
growth Captain John Kitwood and Corporal Geoff Miller
have been given the go-ahead to form the New Bicester Garrison
Angling Club. The ten pin bowling trip organised by W02
Guy Adams was rated a success and enjoyed by all those who
went. Congratulations are in order to Staff Sergeant Graham
Chapman on successfully completing his Provision Course, and
also to Sergeant Colin Guilfoyce and Corporal Geoff Miller
on their respective promotions. We welcome Sergeant Ram
Ramlu on his arrival at the sharp end, and also Private Phil
Callins on his attachment to Section 1G for his assessment in
preparation for change of trade from driver. The five by five
mile Hash House Harriers relay which was reported last month
was used by the DSM(A) teams to raise £250 for local charities.
Corporal ' Lester' Piggott has just completed his transfer
to the thinking man's trade having passed his Bill Supply
Clerk's Course at Blackdown.
Control Division was well represented at the Inter-Company
hockey competition by Captain Mike Murphy, W02 Geoff Malt-
house, Staff Sergeants Taff Stallard, Graham Chapman, Ian
Laing and Geoff Davis, Corporal Geoff Miller acted as umpire.
He would have had difficulty getting an Equity Union Card.
Captain Murphy who played a mean goal keeper impressed one
of the umpires and was rewarded with a yellow card. All in
all it was a good effort but the goals were hard to find and
Headquarters who were represented in part by DSM(A) came an
unfortunate
last.
Staff Sergeant Tony Graves and Corporal Alan Meigh have
been blessed with baby girls produced by their wives.
We welcome Lance Corporals John Hunt and Andy Holt.
both from BAOR and also Major Norman Stock from UNFICYP
to Issues Branch.
Incidentally, Issues Branch have had a smashing time recently.
The ICL engineer delivering the Visual Display Units is confident
that his future with the Company is secure after Lieutenant
Colonel Brian Lickman and W02 Peter Beatty dropped one of
the VDUs and it had to be replaced.
THE main preoccupation of the SOI, Lieutenant Colonel Tony
Camfield, has been his production of the play " Move over
Mrs Markham." It was held in the Tela Theatre, and was
adjudicated at a special performance. All seemed to go well
and we await the result
There has been much liaising with fire and police officers.
in anticipation of the firemen's strike, locations have been
recced, and over three thousand troops from many Regiments
and Corps have been trained by the Army Fire Service In-
structors.
The Recruiting and Liaison organisation has grown yet
again, and Major Dennis Ford has moved offices all the way
from Training Battalion and Depot; he thought he ought to
move house as well so as not to feel that his local move
should be easier than a normal move! Welcome to the Head-
quarters.
SCHOOL OF ORDNANCE
QUITE an eventful month for the School of Ordnance. We
had a very successful Ladies Dinner Night in the Officers Mess.
We said farewell to Lieutenant Colonel and Mrs David Porter.
Major and Mrs Dai Davies, Dai after a stint as PMC, and Major
and Mrs Bob Maclagan, we shall miss them all. The Com-
mandant presented a wedding present to Captain Peter Claughton
on behalf of the Mess, we hope he and Sue will be happy ever
after.
We were also pleased to have as guests Brigadier
Thornton, Colonel Parker and Lieutenant Colonel Major prior
to their excellent talk on the everyday story of country folk at
Donnington.
Major Malcolm Bryant was ordered to the States to
manage the Army Cross Country Team taking part in the New
York marathon. After nine days hard duty he returned to
the School and although the decibels are as high as ever, no
one now understands his accent
Lance Corporal Wrigley now runs the Schools ' pools'
swindle. After our first week he was heard to grumble about a
chap called Dalgleish, " if he hadn't scored that goal in the last
minute
"
W02 Bell had to go to Hedley Court for a couple of
weeks, he slipped a disc carrying too many ammunition
regulations — not paying enough attention to Health and
Safety.
Lieutenant Colonel Cannons has returned from a hard
month course at Ashridge, after all that management indoctrina-
tion it will be a long time before the majority of us understand
him again.
The final of the Inter-Unit Travers-Clarke golf knockout
competition was played at Frilford Heath. The match went to the
eighteenth hole where Major Ray Ansel and his partner Colonel
Ossie Logan (Retd) lifted the prize for the School for the third
consecutive year. We wonder who will maintain the winning
streak next year.
By the time these notes are printed we shall have said fare-
well to Lieutenant Colonel Ray Jacob who will have left us and
the Army after a full thirty seven years—hope your transition
to civvies and a bowler at C and T2a Ray is a happy one.
Finally welcome to Lieutenant Colonel Ian Bradley, Captain
Stewart Addy and Sergeant Watton, we hope you all enjoy the
happy atmosphere of the School.
VEHICLE DIVISION
1981 brings with it a changed military management in the
Division. Colonel Dick Owen has left for Bicester but stays
with the ' firm' as Colonel Control Division. We wish him
bon voyage. Colonel David Porter, hot foot from Andover via
Deepcut, has taken over as Colonel of The Division. Lieutenant
Colonel Maurice Smith assumes the mantle of SOI MTSP and
Lieutenant Colonel Dai Davies SOI Vehicle Branch. We wel-
come them all and hope that they have successful tours of duty
in Chilwell. We said fond farewells to Lieutenant Colonels Alan
Barr and Brian Irwin both on retirement. We wish them every
good fortune in their civilian appointments and thank them-
for their service to the Corps.
Being one of several football fanatics in Chilwell, Colonel
' Dick' before he left organised a charity football match
between a combined Depot Team and an All Stars Team of
ex-Derby County, Notts County and Nottingham Forest pro-
fessionals. Chilwell were not disgraced—the result a four all
draw and £250 raised for charity.
'
The Division, led by Captain Bob Manners, also sponsored
a Charity Walk around Rutland Water in aid of SSAFA and a
Charity Chase over a hilly nine mile course at Dovedale in
Derbyshire in support of Chilwell Charities. The winner of the
event was Mr Ian Adkin of MTSP representing the civilian team.
The winner of the sweepstake was the RSM COD Chilwell—
well fancy that!
Mrs Mary Pugson organised a shopping trip to Jersey; a
Viscount flight from the local East Midlands Airport and a trip
round the Island for sixty employees and their friends from
Chilwell. Despite the bumpy flight over, some people received
super presents at Christmas.
Miss Valerie Goodman has never been a big gambler but for
just 20p she won the jackpot of £100 in the Civilian Canteen.
What a super Christmas present!
We welcome Private Jim Cockerill from the COD, Corporal
Andrew Beadle to ACA vice Corporal Pete Lythgoe who is off
to the Orient and congratulate Sergeant Dave and Linda Major
on their recent marriage.
The moratorium has been lifted but replaced by a period of
severe restraint, so we are back in business if not in top gear!
APPRENTICES
COLLEGE
HEADQUARTERS
COMPANY. Headquarters Company could
well be mistaken at the moment for a bee-hive. College Head-
quarters (Sleepy Hollow) looks a bit more lively too. It must
have something to do with the Chief Clerk, W02 Alan Purvis.
investing in a long overdue haircut!
As the winds blow through the trees the distinct cries of
Sergeant John Hladkij can be heard as he beavers away on his
MTI Course. Never mind John not long to go now. Our First
Aid classroom looks set to become Dr Coney's Surgery after
Corporal Pete Coney successfully passed his First Aid In-
structors course.
Sadly we say farewell to Sergeant Jeff Edwards and Corporal
Steve Harper both to BAOR and Lance Corporal Mick Holt
to Chilwell.
New arrivals are Corporals Kevin Nicholson from
NORTHAG and Taff Evans who joined us from A Company.
A COMPANY.
Once more Alamein and Arnhem Platoons
confronted each other on the Winter Term battle camp, held on
local training areas. The initial phase saw both platoons glower-
ing at each other over a main railway line. However, a tunnel
was soon located and ' sneaky-beaky' patrolling commenced.
Alamein discovered the opposition, who were listening to a
thorough briefing by their Commando trained Platoon Com-
