CURATOR
COLONEL R1DGEWAY has been appointed Curator of the
Corps Museum at Deepcut, in addition to his appointment as
Editor of THE GAZETTE.
Our museum which is of a very high standard, has recently
been re-organised to display, in chronological order, the history
of the Corps from its antecedents in the Office of Ordnance in
the fifteenth century to the present day.
There is, however, a surprising shortage of material cover-
ing World War II—and a complete dearth of exhibits to illustrate
the RAOC role and achievements during the operations in
Korea, Malaya, Kenya, Aden, Cyprus and Borneo.
If any serving or ex-member of the Corps, has any items
which he thinks may be appropriate to help fill these gaps it
would be greatly appreciated if he would present them to the
Corps Museum. If you have or know of the whereabouts of
any item of historical interest kindly contact: •—
Colonel E. Ridgeway OBE (Retd). Curator, RAOC Museum,
Deepcut, Camberley Surrey, GUI6 6RW. Telephone: Alder-
shot 24431, Blackdown Ext 516 or 515.
MRS
Photo Staff Sergeant C. I. Kimpton.
Farewell after thirty five years with the Corps.
RETIREMENT OF
BETTY
PICKERING
BETTY PICKERING joined the COD Donnington as a Store-
woman in 1941 at that time when the Storehouses were' heated
by Franklyn Stoves and the mid-day meal often consisted of
jacket potatoes baked in the ashes of those stoves. In the last
twenty three years of her service Betty served as a Clerical Officer
on the Headquarters Staff of the Spares Sub-Depot.
Herr Holland is pictured above with Lieutenant Colonel
Wyman the present Officer Commanding and Major Mansfield
(a total of one hundred and six years service with RAOC).
He will be missed by those who serve at Wetter and we
wish him well for the future.
For those ex-Wetter, Herr Holland's address is: 5802
Wetter 1, Konigstrasse 4.
JOINED
IN
GERMANY
BORN in BMH Iserlohn where his father was serving with 21
Signal Regiment, David Gilks has seen quite a lot of Army
life already. In 1970 the family settled down in Viersen and
in 1976 David commenced a three years apprenticeship. Qualify-
ing as a Metal Turner in 1979 he seemed likely to spend the
rest of his life in a comfortable nine-to-five job, but, having seen
a little of the world outside Germany already on a Far Eastern
tour with his father, David wanted to look a bit further.
The Army seemed as good a way as any to him so, as
Ordnance Depot Viersen was his ' local' unit, he made applica-
tion through the Admin Officer to join the Corps. Welcome
to RAOC, David.
Lieutenant Colonel Cane makes the presentation.
To mark her retirement Betty was given a carriage clock and
other gifts including a Victorian cut glass fruit bowl subscribed
to by all those Officers who had commanded the Spares Sub-
Depot over that period.
Our photograph shows the OIC Spares Sub-Depot, Lieu-
tenant Colonel Gane, concluding a ' This is Your Life ' ceremony
with a presentation of the gifts. Best wishes on your retirement
Betty.
