THE BUCKLEY VC
(Continued from page 329.)
John Buckley's escape, after the events narrated in the
above report, was almost miraculous. He jumped into the River
Jumna and swam across through a hail of bullets from the
mutineers. He was hit in the arm, but managed to struggle to the
opposite shore.
Utterly exhausted, for he was no longer a young man, and
twenty five years in India had left a mark, Buckley fell un-
conscious on the bank of the river, and was captured with a
number of other British residents. On recovering consciousness,
he was informed by one of his fellow prisoners, an eye-witness,
of the massacre of his wife and family by the mutineers at the
very time when he himself had been gallantly defending the fort.
Heart-broken, he begged his captors to take his life too, but a
Sepoy officer replied: " You are too brave a man to die like
that."
Eventually Buckley escaped and rejoined the British troops.
Continually volunteering for the most hazardous tasks, and con-
stantly risking his life, he nevertheless seemed to have a charmed
life and survived to be commissioned for his services, receiving
an appointment of Deputy Assistant Commissary of Ordnance.
A severe attack of sunstroke, his third, rendered him unfit
for some time, but on his recovery he was appointed Provost
Marshal to the garrison at Meerut, where it was his duty to
superintend the execution of one hundred and fifty mutineers.
Shortly after, signs of returning ill-health becoming apparent,

he was summoned before a medical board and advised to avail
himself of their recommendation for leave of absence. Proceed-
ing to Calcutta, he was granted two years' furlough in England.
He left Calcutta on the SS Alma on the 18th May, 1858, and
arriving in the United Kingdom on 6th July, reported to India
House on the 9th July.
On 31st July, 1858, John Buckley was ordered to proceed to
Portsmouth and thereafter on the 2nd August, 1858, in the
presence of the garrison of Portsmouth, paraded on Southsea
Common, Lieutenant John Buckley, together with other brave
men, received from the hands of Her Majesty Queen Victoria
the highest honour which can be conferred on a British soldier,
the Victoria Cross.
John Buckley went home to Stalybridge in September, 1858.
Unable to settle down in this country, he returned to India,
eventually reaching the rank of Major. Unfortunately, further
details of his life cannot be traced, but it is presumed he retired
after many years of honourable service, and died in the country
of his adoption.
The VC came up for public auction in 1948, and was
purchased, on behalf of Headquarters RAOC Officers Mess for
One Hundred Guineas.
As a result of the great interest shown in the Press on the
subject of this early VC, a Mrs F. M. Patchett, of Bradford,
wrote stating that she was a great niece of John Buckley, and
had an oil painting of him wearing the VC. This painting was
purchased by Brigadier G. C. H. Heron on behalf of 2 CCD,
York, and presented by him again on their behalf to the Head-
quarters Officers Mess on 19th November, 1948.
Both the Victoria Cross and the painting of John Buckley
wearing it, are on exhibition in the Corps Museum.
