Transcription he access to a computer?). Captain Carl Hoe having won the
DSCS Chess Championship has just completed a course on
celestial navigation in preparation for the ' Observer' two-
handed transatlantic race in which he and Major John Ross are
hoping to enter the Corps yacht ' Thunderer R A O C He is off
on a qualifying sail shortly.
Recent arrivals to DSCS include Colonel Spackman as
Head of Division 1, Captain Jim Bridle, WOsl Hobson and
Thomas (ex Hong Kong!) and W02 Gordon. We say farewell
to Colonel Barratt on promotion, Major Richard Hazlerigg, Cap-
tain Pete Atkinson and WOl Kevon Furby on completion of his
service and wish him luck in his new job in Sussex.
Finally, contrary to any rumours which might be circulating,
Snoopy is alive and well—he has had his moments though as
the cartoon shows.
You don't keep a dog and bark yourself!! RIP 2 / 8 1 .
Directorate of Land Service Ammunition
FOR those who are interested in DLSA events, fear not, Am-
munition (Ops and Plans) Branch have gone into a deep hypnotic
trance. This is not their normal state, but an attempt to rid
themselves of the awful weed. They went, en masse, to an
Oxford hypnotist who for £6 each persuaded them that smoking
was nasty. Somebody who was brave enough to walk into the
Branch reported that everybody seemed to be bearing up in the
circumstances, however conversations are very tense.
The DLSA hockey team has risen from the ashes of last
year. One game so far, which was a tremendous success in
arranging the meeting of eleven DLSA players. The result, a
loss, was rather an anticlimax after the excitement of raising a
team. However, watch this space for further sporting events.
DLSA Heavy Weapons Branch welcomes W02 Bill Barber
from Tidworth and says farewell to ' Q ' Munro who goes to
CAD Kineton. Farewell also to Major John Bennett who some-
how wangled a posting to Viersen, after only a year back from
Belize. Left to run Heavy Weapons Branch are Freda Forshew
and Inge Harper who command all they survey. They are sup-
ported by Kathy Abery and Val Saunders whose knowledge of
receipts from production is almost irreplaceable. Val has taken
a leaf from her own job and gone into production herself. The
Managers Major Alec Lamb and Major Dickie Henderson sit
bashing their calculators trying to convince the staff that two by
two does not equal five no matter what they say in Whitehall.
On the technical side, Major Derek Waterworth is technically
planning his resettlement courses, ready for the end of the
year.
GM Branch is currently boasting of being up to strength for
the first time in two years. Apparently this is all due to the
arrival of Staff Sergeant Sylvester from 3 BAD. This warm glow
of being up to strength lasted but a few moments before Captain
Mike Wharmby went to Northern Ireland. Congratulations to
Captain Mike Parle and Ruth on the birth of their son Adam.
On the sporting side, W02 Dolman and Staff Sergeant M.
Davies are active on the squash court. GM Branch also mention
their Staff Sergeant Mountney's fishing trips. We will let them
take all the credit for these fishing trips; fishing, like smoking
are emotive subjects here. The Vauxhall Barracks Rifle Club is
currently going through a great deal of activity. Staff Sergeants
Clark, Wrotchford and Proctor are all through to the second
stage of the Army Individual Championship and the Unit
Team is through to the semi-final of the UKLF Knockout com-
petition having won the last round seven hundred and seventy six
to seven hundred and seventy five.
Directorate of Supply Management
CONTROL DIVISION
WE start this month by congratulating Sergeant Colin Guilfoyle
on his engagement to Private Sue Purdew of the WRAC. Colin
has very generously invited all members of DSM(A) to a free
drinks evening on his stag night sometime in September.
It seems to have been a month for courses, Corporals Jock
Brown, Cliff Paton and Lance Corporal Kevin Glasspool all
recently successfully completed their EPC Examinations. Sergeant
Pete Heap successfully sat and passed the ADPI aptitude test.
He is now awaiting the brain transplant as soon as a recipient
is found. Captain Mike Murphy is at the School of Ordnance
completing his Ordnance Officers Course and Staff Sergeant
Taff Stallard is at present studying for his final subject in
EPC(A).
The Sergeants Mess is going to be a much quieter place in
April as Sergeant Dave Gartside will be taking part in a charity
walk across the Pennine Way.
Postings out are W02 Guy Adams, Staff Sergeant Graham
Chapman and Corporal Geoff Miller.
Welcome to Staff Sergeant Gregory from Viersen and Lance
Corporal Skinner from Belize.
VEHICLE
DIVISION
MAJOR GENERAL GERRARD-WRIGHT, GOC Eastern
District, visited The Division and after initial briefing by Colonel
David Porter toured MTSP, including the Video Terminal room,
Vehicle Branch and Direct Procurement Group meeting military
and civilian staff and discussing their work. He was duly im-
pressed by the ' shape ' of the DSM Sweatshirt modelled by
Miss Valerie Goodman of gaming machine fame! Mr Charles
Flint, HEO, OIC Gen Admin of Management Services Branch,
has ' retired' at sixty although he remains with the Division in
the Finance Section. His ' leaving ' prompted a series of parties
including a formal lunching out in the Officers Mess attended by
most Grade Two military and civilian officers of the Division.
We wish him well as he enters a new era in his considerable
service to the Army Department and welcome Mr Colin Wright
in his place from MTSP. We congratulate Mr Ron Sutcliffe
on his promotion to HEO and Corporal Nick Marshall on his
substantive promotion.
We say farewell and thank you to the UKLF Fleet Manager,
Captain Nick and Mrs Rosalind Bell on posting to BAOR and
welcome Captain Colin and Mrs Helen Airdrie and family from
that theatre.
We welcome Mr Peter Newlove and the staff of Technical
Records Group to the fold. Colonel Vehicle Division assumed
technical responsibility for this Group on 9th February 1981.
We have received visits from Mr Bernard Trevelyan,
DP(FVE)3, and Mr Frank Tarry, the PM GAV, and Miss Pat
Barrow and her Exchequer and Audit Team from Andover as
well as a host of representatives from manufacturing firms
reflecting the industrial recession and general tightening up
of Defence expenditure. The provision machine is moving again
with PRFs flowing and some money becoming available to buy
spares. However, the techniques are slightly different and
' accountability' is definitely the watchword!
