STAMPE COLLECTION (Continued from page 422) Once we had landed at Lydd, I began again to think that the problems must be over; but there was one more delay in store. As expected, on clearing customs at Lydd I was required to pay VAT on the importation of the aeroplane, but British Customs do not accept cheques. (The British are all expected to travel abroad with pockets stuffed full of pound notes). Yet again we had to spend the night in a hotel and wait for the banks to open so that I could cash a cheque. From then on the next two legs of the flight really did go smoothly, firstly into Redhill to refuel and then lastly into Middle Wallop. That was on Thursday afternoon. I remember on the Wednesday of the previous week, say- ing to my wife, " With luck we will be home on Friday." It had taken eight days, sixteen distinct flights and the solving of a range of problems; but I do now have a bi-plane; which had it not been for the ready assistance of Doug and Jerry at very short notice, might never have happened and indeed, without the exercise of Jerry's French the thing might have become totally impossible . . . I just do not shout English that loudly. Safely home at last. 424 |
