Letters were dispatched to Corps Senior Officers world wide. This generated a great response and the orders started to flood in from BAOR, Hong Kong. Cyprus, Antwerp and UK. The issue appeared in the Philatelic Bulletin, attracting many civilian applications and by 1st November, £1,000 had been raised, covering our costs. Everything from now on was profit, Lc V cheered up. demanded a posting and got one. DT returned his weapon to the armoury. Even Frod was back in favour. And so to the great day—14th November 1981. Le V, Sergeant French and thirty RAOC Apprentices mingled with the Lord Mayor's Show crowd adding a new dimension to * Cries of Old London. 1 tL Send your granny a souvenir RAOC cover, lady—fresh off the press and only a quid/ 1 What a tremendous job they did—almost £2,000 raised on one day. (See also page 359.) . . . and DCOS in a fine yellow vintage Rolls Royce. The art work for the cover and special hand stamp was meticulously produced by the Printing Branch at the Employ- ment Training School. This was all sent off to RE(PCC) at Mill Hill for clearance by the Post Office. We had in- corporated the Corps badge in the hand stamp: this was deemed to take up too much space so back to the drawing board for the printers and this time all was approved. Which 14p stamp should we use—normal definitive or special issue? A special stamp was being issued in October showing fishermen, the issue of the Christmas Stamp would be ifter our event but wasn't there a Royal Wedding in July? We nought £700 worth of the Prince Charles/Lady Diana stamps L ind stuck them on five hundred envelopes, then told the Post Office; " Well you can take them off again, the stamps will be out of circulation by November." Panic for a week and much talk of boiling kettles—DT was steaming too. The Superin- tending Clerk, WOl Le Vaillant had now been given the project as things looked as if they might turn nasty. It may be coincidence but, on hearing this, the Post Office relented and agreed to accept our stamps. So, licked, labelled, inserts inserted and envelopes hand- stamped, five thousand covers awaited a deluge of orders in response to an announcement in THE GAZETTE. Cheap at £1 each and, while stocks last, £2 for one signed by DGOS or the Lord Mayor. We needed to sell one thousand to cover costs alone and within weeks of THE GAZETTE hitting the streets, more than a dozen had been ordered by units as far flung as Bicester and Kineton, Six were snapped up at the Andover Open Day. " OK " said DT, " Send Le V. round alt the stamp dealers in London—they'll buy the lot" They didn't, " It has no ' first day' value, it was too expensive and, anyway, the City of London had produced one which was more attractive. 1,1 Nothing else for it, DT would have to get involved. Dis- plays were set up all over Blackdown. No one, including QMG, VQMG and GOC dared leave the Training Centre without one. . . . when RAOC Apprentices mingled with the Lord Mayor's Show crowd and added a new dimension to the ' Cries of Old London/ A total of £3,300 was raised and, after costs had been covered, £2,200 profit was left for charities. This sum has been allocated as follows: £750—The National Playing Field Associa- tion—a charitv with which Sir Christopher Leaver is particularly associated; £650—SSAFA; £800—Charities sponsored by RAOC Training Centre. We are most grateful to all those who were involved with the production of the cover, promoting them, selling them and, of course, to you for buying them. Those who may have missed out are not too late—we still have a few left! Scene: DTs office DT: There you are, you see, no gTeat problem. Good idea of mine don't you think? Frod: Very true sir, very true but next time I do think we should DT: Oh shut up. Curtain FOR DETAILS OF THE 1982 OFFICERS CLUB BALL SEE PAGE 370 So to the great day |
