BAOR GOLF 19T9 THE year started with a new Chairman of RAOG BAOR Golf —Lieutenant Colonel W. J. Manuel of 3 BAD. Captain N. J. Bridle continued as Secretary assisted by WOl D. Brunt, both of Headquarters 15 Ordnance Group. Captain J. K. Fellows was team captain until his departure in July when Lance Corporal W. I. M. Gray was chosen as his successor. THE SPRING MEETING. The Spring Meeting was held at RAF Bruggen on the 19th and 20th of April. Due perhaps to the proximity of Easter, the school holidays and various divisional exercises, the turnout was poor—thirty three competitors— about half of last year's field. WOl J. T. Kearney of 3 BAD won the DOS BAOR Scratch Cup for the third consecutive year; Ordnance Depot Antwerp won the Bateson Trophy as Unit champions, largely through the successes of Sergeant J. McNee who won the RAOC BAOR Handicap Cup, the Chat- field Plate (Stableford) and, with his partner QMSI G. Young, the Martin Jenkins Rosebowls (Stableford Foursomes). Cap- tain N. J. Bridle won the Comock Mashie (Bogey) and W02 R. Ward of Ordnance Depot Viersen was adjudged the best twenty four handicapper. THE GOVIER PUTTER. The annual match against the RAPC was played at Bruggen off handicap on 7th June and resulted in a convincing seven and a half to four and half win for RAOC. Our team under Captain Fellows was Staff Sergeant Ladley, Sergeant Kelly, Private Carroll, Captain Bridle, Major Clarke, WOl Emerton and Sergeant McNee. RAOC vs. REME. Though not the walkover of last year, RAOC still achieved a substantial seven to five victory over REME at Bruggen on 22nd June. Our team was Captain Fellows, WOl Kearney, Staff Sergeant Ladley, W02 Bowen, Sergeant Kelly, Captain Bridle, Major Clarke and Lieutenant Colonel Manuel. ARMY INTER-CORPS CHAMPIONSHIPS. Three of our players — Lance Corporal Gray, WOl Kearney and Staff Sergeant Ladley went to England and with WOl Powell won the Army Inter-Corps Championship and returned in triumph with the Royal Irish Rangers Trophy. BAOR INTER CORPS CHAMPIONSHIPS. This year our team for the BAOR Inter-Corps Championships was Captain Fellows, W02 Bowen, Staff Sergeant Ladley, Sergeant Kelly and Lance Corporal Gray. WOl Kearney one of our mainstays for the past three years was not available for this meeting. The competition was held at Sennelager on 18th/19th July. In the qualifying stroke-play round RAOC finished top qualifiers. We drew RAPC in the quarter finals and defeated them by ten holes. In the semi-final however REME got their revenge and beat us by four holes to go into the final in which they defeated the Infantry. This was our first defeat since losing to RAPC in the Spring of 1976. In the play-off for third place we beat the Medical Services by eight holes. THE RHINE TROPHY. The annual match between RAOC East Rhine and RAOC West Rhine was halved this year in an exciting finish at Bruggen on 29th June. THE AUTUMN MEETING. The Autumn Meeting was held at Bruggen on 27th/28th September and started with excellent scores in the Medal round. W02 Bowen scored a gross seventy —one under par and though he won the Chapman Cup (Scratch), had to concede the Wulfen Handicap Cup by one stroke to WOl Emerton's gross seventy six, net sixty four! five other golfers also beat net par in this round. Despite being cut a stroke in the morning Sergeant Hogg won the afternoon Stableford and although he was further cut, won the following day's Bogey Competition as well. The Stableford Foursomes were won by Corporal Bushnall and Lance Corporal Oliver. Private Lewis was adjudged the best twenty four handicapper. RAOC vs RCT. In the final match of the year we under- estimated our opponents and were soundly defeated by a team on form. Our side of WOl Bowen, Major Swindley, Captain Bridle, Major Clarke, W02 Raffan, Sergeant Davidson, Staff Sergeant Davies and Sergeant Hogg lost eight four. Only Staff Sergeant Davies managed wins morning and afternoon. INDIVIDUAL SUCCESSES. Lance Corporal Gray has had another very good year. He has won the Army Match Play, the Army Stroke Play, the BAOR Match Play and the BAOR Stroke Play Championships. In addition, he was reinstated as as Amateur in time to enter and win the Dutch Amateur Open Match Play Championships. Lance Corporal Gray, WOsl Kearney and Bowen, Staff Sergeant Ladley and Sergeant Kelly have played for BAOR this year. Lance Corporal Gray has represented the Army. NEW COMMITTEE. Lieutenant Colonel Manuel will be con- tinuing as Chairman in 1980, Major Lucas takes over as Hon Secretary from Captain Bridle who is posted to UK. Staff Sergeant Ladley is to be Assistant Secretary and the Captain and Vice-Captain are Lance Corporal Gray and WOl Bowen respectively. Golf continues to flourish in the RAOC in BAOR.
