Transcription Griffiths who joins us from across the square (Ord), Corporal
Smudge Smith and family and also Private John Heath. We
hope you all enjoy your tour with AQ Operations. A men-
tion must go to Corporal Paul Harrison for his excellent efforts
in passing the dreaded EPC (all four subjects in one go). Well
done. A couple of belated mentions to Corporal Steve Kemp
and Lance Corporal Bob Shicls on the births of their sons
earlier in the year—congratulations.
Finally, a mention to the Branch oldie, Staff Sergeant Eddie
Edmondson, for his valiant efforts in most of the Branch sports.
Unfortunately, a while ago he broke his arm whilst playing
football for the Sergeants Mess but is now right back into the
swing of things again. Keep going Grandad—you're only as
old as you feel!
ORD BRANCH. Congratulations this month goes to Corpora)
Pete Brown and his wife Allison on the birth of their daughter
Nicola Jeannette. ' No quiet nights for them for awhile.'
With SOI, Lieutenant Colonel Knipc, on a couple of weeks
leave people start disappearing. Ord Materials complete went
to Berlin for the DOWO's conference, and Staff Sergeant
Graham Orszewski off in a Combined Services tour of Scotland
playing badminton and as soon as he gets back from that its
down to Dusseldorf for would you believe it, the BAOR
Badminton Championships. Still, it's not all time off—part of it
is leave, I think.
After having threatened the British Army with his premature
retirement Private Tony Baillie has now seen the light and by
withdrawing his PVR is now hoping to settle down and make
a career.
1st Armoured Division
SADLY this month sees the departure to
UK of two veterans of the Headquarters.
Firstly our DOWO Conductor Fred
Maskery who goes to UK for his last six
months of service. Fred will be greatly
missed, not only by the darts /football,
cribbage teams, DD rep etc., but by the
k
remaining personnel in the office, who will
tfejpijc^ -^vjMs? now have to re-discover the branch copies
^ » " ^£<T^——- SJ f Mat Regs, AGAIs, Army Mounting In-
structions and the one hundred and one
other publications Fred has committed to memory? It is no
reflection on his successor, SSM Pete Osborne, that the cry of
" ask the D O W O " will have to be replaced by " look it up
your b
self." I am sure all his friends in the Corps will
join me in wishing Fred and his family health and happiness in
civvy street. The message to all who know him is that if you
are ever passing through Wigan have a nice time, he is going
to live in Bedford.

The second veteran is Sergeant Len Wrightson who goes to
Stores Platoon 16 AD Regiment Workshop—(no he did not
leave to join Newcastle United as strongly rumoured in the past).
Our best wishes go with him and his family, and a reminder
to him to keep the bolt well polished and the bath topped up
with coal.
We welcome Sergeant Bob Maxwell and Miss Debbie
Holden who, with our other two typists, help to keep our
minds off work.
We congratulate A/Lance Corporal Alan Wiggins in his
promotion to that rank, and also in passing his B2. Also we
must congratulate Maggie Patterson who is getting married this
month to Sergeant Barrie Green RAPC (our single lads let her
slip through their fingers).
Our CRAOC, Lieutenant Colonel Clive Pickard—at a
recent games night at 79 Supply Depot, showed what leader-
ship was all about by being the only member of our team to be
un-defeated in all the games he took part in. Also from
CRAOC is another cartoon with a very good caption (Is he
trying to get a message over!)
A
ORDNANCE
COMPANY
WE have recently bid farewell to our GOC, Major General
Lawson, on his final visit to the Company. The visit ended in
a parade on which the GOC presented the Long Service and
Good Conduct Medal to CSM Brian Patchitt, congratulations
Brian.
On the social front the Wives Club enjoyed a trip to the
American PX at Bremerhaven. A good spending spree was had
by all and the menfolk predict a long dry month as a result.
The Company organised the annual bonfire and fireworks
display which has become a major Anglo/German event in
Soltau. Approximately one thousand people both local and

military attended.
Music for the evening was provided by
courtesy of the Local Fire Brigade Band. Food was in abun-
dance throughout the evening under the watchful eye of Sergeant
Brian Hymers. The best dressed guy competition was won by
Master Scott Gray.
On the sporting scene the Company soccer team suffered
a set back to their impressive record when beaten seven four
in the BAOR Minor Units Cup. There are still other cups
to aim for however, so watch this space!
The cross country team continue to improve their record
in the league and have not yet lost a league match.
The rugby team notched up their first victory in a friendly
match (three cheers) and were narrowly beaten in the Minor
Units Cup by eighteen points to fourteen points. No mean
achievement for a team in its first season.
Finally mention must be made of Captain David Bentley's
attachment to the Italian Army, a report of which will be
submitted for publication in the near future. Congratulations
are due to Corporal and Mrs Long on the birth of their
daughter Lorrain and to the following on their recent pro-
motions: SQMS (Potleg) Davies, Lance Corporal Johnson
REME and to Lance Corporals Gardiner and Bousfield on pass-
ing their Bl Courses.
Recent departures: Private Wiggins to Headquarters RAOC
and Lieutenant May to civilian life.
79 SUPPLY DEPOT
AT long, long last Corporal Mick Naylor leaves us in March
for an overseas posting, all the way to Nienberg, about sixty
miles down the road. Now the Chief Clerk Sergeant Doug
Mclnnes can rest in peace.
We welcome back Sergeant Alf Marks to the Bakery
after his temporary detachment to 85 Supply Depot and also
Corporal Tony Morton back to the Depot after his month's
holiday on his EPC course!
On the sporting side, the Depot five-a-side football team
got off to a good start by beating the Hohne Garrison Head-
quarters Team eleven goals to seven, the main goal scorers
being Major Byles and W02 Grant. On Wednesday after-
noons most of the Unit retire to the badminton court up in
the bakery loft to batter the stuffing out of a poor innocent ;
shuttlecock. Squash balls are also being freely expended as
our valiant squash team fights to keep off the bottom place in
the ' BAOR Inter Supply Depot Championships.' We are lying
third to date but as only three Depots entered!
Our luck, however, has not faltered on the social scene.
Our last games night was held against Headquarters RAOC
1st Armoured Division when we welcomed our CRAOC and j
his merry band from Verden. It would be indelicate to touch
on the score but Headquarters is now, no doubt, training really
hard for revenge at nine pin bowling with which they have
threatened us in the return match. Indeed, the Fighting 79th \
fights on!

OUR football team has had what can only be called ' mixed'
fortunes of late. In the Unit football competition we lost
