the enemy if they were one of those few who were unlucky enough to get caught. Private Mac McManus has developed his own counter interrogation technique which involves laying on the floor, totally limp, and refusing to move. The eight men detailed to move his great bulk eventually gave up. Other members of our ' Enemy package' were Sergeant Yorkie Coates, Corporal Ken Underwood, Lance Corporals Beany Palmer and Squatter Stevens, and Privates Dougie Alexander, Andy Hughes, Gobbie King, Scouse Foster and Jerry Field. Another major event this month was the transfer of ' Manny Baby' Mansell from the CQMS department to the Depot Office for an undisclosed sum. It is felt though that the CQMS, Staff Sergeant Bill Disberry, must have paid handsomely to clinch the deal. Captain Mark Wickham also appeared to be on the move when he received an official looking posting order to RSG Bicester—vice a Lieutenant WRAC! He is still pursuing his enquiries to discover who the joker was. We must mention the visit from the OC designate, due to arrive in February, Major Allkins, at present DAA and QMG Gibraltar. He was here for a week and appears to be a fine man under whom we will be proud to serve and if he should require anything when he arrives he has only to ask and we will move heaven and earth to provide for his every wish Sir—if you should happen to read this. Successfully completed courses, Private Durning—APTI, Lance Corporal Comerford—helicopter handling, Private Hughes (643)—Storeman Ammunition duties, Lance Corporal O'Neill— driving course, Staff Sergeant Reid—Service funds accounts. Posting in—Private Smith (310) (or was he just sick on leave—it's been that long since we've seen him). 49 RP COMPANY. The year rolls on. The Winter, creeping icy fingers slowly suffocating trees, the frost rime hanging on the branches. Soldiers return muddy, tired, smiling from Steel Trap, Red Gauntlet, Keystone, humping dumping endless sleep- less nights with the confirmation of a job well done. And the work goes on in between the visits, oh the visits, never ending. Major General Mathysse, Commander Logistics Headquarters Northag resplendent in Belgian Army uniform, Brigadier Cowdrey, Director Land Services Ammunition, Lieutenant Colonel Dickinson the new Commanding Officer, harrying, chasing, taking command, Oberstleutnant Roth, Right Safety Officer of the Helicopter School in nearby Bueckeburg with five of his officers, Brigadier Walker, Commander Minden Garrison, Major Johansson on holiday with forty Danish youths on a football tour of Germany. And the SSO and the PSA and the Intelligence and Security and the Insurance Companies! They all came to visit 49, and mostly had nice things to say. Then the parades, soldiers bulling, polishing, shining and a small contingent to the Martinikirche Minden to remember, more bulling, polishing for the Volkstrauertag with the whole Company this time remembering with our NATO allies, Lance Corporal Archibald smartly laying a wreath on the Obern- kirchen Mausoleum. The sportsfield tired grass suffering under studded boots echoing to the cries of " Come on 49," 49 winning, beating the LAD 1 RRF ten one, 19 Squadron RCT eleven one, drawing one one with 29 Field Squadron four four with 4th Armoured Division Transport Regiment RCT Workshop, ignominious in defeat by 20 Elec Workshop. " Come on 49 " and back to extra PT, especially long tall Corporal Hclhcrington and hi>. basketballers. There were postings in and out too. welcoming hand- clapping Privates Ashton, Wood, Mills 22, Kcclc, Hawkins. Evans, Stepin, and Corporal Stray, Petroleum Operators all; a welcome also to Staff Sergeant Vincent. Corporal Childs and Private Stephenson. Outgoing well-wishing, fond farewells waved to Corporals Dobbing and Smilh, Lance Corporal 1 ; Spinks, Burgess and Brown, and Private White. And the year rolls to its end. Corps Troops STORES PLATOON CORPS TROOPS WORKSHOP NOW that the Unit has returned from Exercise Autumn Spear, the CREMEs annual sightseeing tour, we now have time to reflect on a few of the memories; firstly Private Simon Nock decided that the best place to carry his cam net was wrapped around the propshaft of his Bedford, all well and good until he had to try and get it off, secondly our OC, Captain Parry, playing reveille and other well known army tunes, will long live in the memory; there is no truth in the rumour that he is going to make an LP. The promotion board has selected the following for pro- motion to their next highest rank Sergeant Mick Render, A/Sergeant John Frew, Corporal Alan Mayoh, Lance Corporal Pete Cock, Privates ' Muppet' Macgregor, Andy David, ' Taffy ' Roberts and finally ' Spud' Murphy, congratulations one and all. Congratulations once again to the following: Private Andy David on passing his RPC2 and Private ' Spud' Murphy on passing his BI—well done. Finally on the sporting scene Sergeant Mick Render is ' still' playing for the Unit football team, Lance Corpora) Steve Butcher, Privates Chris Emerton, Muppet Macgregor and Spud Murphy are helping the Unit hockey team, while Lance Corporal Keith Harvey is winning trophies in that most energetic of sports 'Angling,' talk about the one that got away! A dramatic photograph of the Corps Vehicle Company night firing on the Vogelsang Training area in Cermany. CORRESPONDENTS PLEASE send in any short items of general interest that may happen in your Unit or your area, for publication in the front section of THE GAZETTE. If accompanied by a picture so much the better—though this is not essential. Stories of the length and style of those published this month under " For the Record" are required. Keep them short—make them interesting. Cerman Old Comrades—the Bundeswehr and 49 Company of the Combat Supplies Battalion march in remembrance in Germany. I — |
