Transcription SCHWARZER
PETER
AND
SANTA
THE "Viersen Sports Club 1848' organised what was termed a
' St Nicholas R u n ' in which some three thousand participants
ran or walked in one of various cross country events which
were designed to cater for a range of athletic abilities and ages.
Our 15 Ordnance Group provided thirty three entries led by the
Commander. Colonel Edwards and his family and by Lieutenant
Colonel Rees, CO of Ordnance Depot Viersen and Mrs Rees.
The children's events were started by St Nicholas (known
for drill purposes as Lance Corporal Biesty) assisted by his at-
tendant ' Schwarzer Peter' (concealing Mr Skinner of Viersen
Depot Transport').
past members of the Mess, is a naturalised British citizen. Born
in Poland over fifty five years ago he came to Chilwell in 1948
and started work in the Mess. Since then he worked his way
to the position of Manager, an appointment he has held with
great success for the last ten years.
The citation, which accompanied the award was read by the
PMC, Lieutenant Colonel MacColl to the assembled company.
He spoke of the conscientiousness and zeal shown by Frank
during his long service and particularly during his time as
Manager. The consistently high standards of service and at-
tention to detail, the long hours of hard work for which Frank
is renowned and the high esteem in which he is held by all who
know and work with him, were all emphasised. Frank has
proved himself to be a valuable and respected person and one
who has richly earned this certificate. Our sincere congratula-
tions on this and now on the award of the BEM (see page 265).
FOR
THE
RECORD
I GLEAN most of the material for this section of THE GAZETTE
from either talking to people or by extracting suitable pieces
from Unit newsletters.
I would, however, be grateful for any short, chatty, newsy
items that you feel might have a general interest or be worthy
of permanent record. They can be with or without a photo-
graph—though preferably with.
I would like this part of THE GAZETTE to become a forum
for keeping all ranks of the Corps in the picture of what of a
serious—and not so serious nature, is going on. You know
the sort of thing—did you sec in THE GAZETTE thatl
Things are happening every day—send them in, I am sure
that otheis will be interested. Editor.
Santa looks fine but
It had been arranged that St Nicholas would arrive by
helicopter but a last minute decision by the German authorities
so ban weekend flying necessitated a hurried change in the
method of transport.
As will be seen from the accompanying photograph, how-
ever. they were able to ensure that Santa Claus was given five
star treatment.
