matches to one. This tour stood him in good stead for the BAOR championships as he was in all the finals but the pace took its toll and after having some very hard fought finals came away with one winner and three runncrs-up trophies. No actual departures this month but welcome to Captain Campbell who has joined us temporarily until February filling in for S03 Ops. We hope he enjoys his short stay with us. Finally on behalf of Ordnance Branch 1 (BR) Corps we wish everybody a very prosperous New Year. Isr Armoured Division A HEADQUARTERS Most people have passed their BFA Tests and a pood per- centage have passed their APW tests. On the sporting scene, we have had a mi\cd month Firstly the soccer team beat RAOC 2nd Armoured Division ten three in the DOS Cup. Then they went to Berlin to play 247 RMP Company and were beaten four nil. The cros- country team continue to be unbeaten and Sergeant Berry i< still outrunning Kirby and Company. It is with sadness that we have said farewell to our Second- in-Comand/Administration Officer Captain David Bentlcy and his wife Faye. we wish them weir in their new posting. Als<> departing from the scene are Staff Sergeant and Mrs Ahcrn, Corporal Brown, Lance Corporal Recs and Privates Carson. Dean. Shcppard and Soulsby. New arrivals include Staff Sergeant Kelly. Lance Corpora! Taylor and Private Smith. STORES PLATOON 1 ARMOURED WORKSHOP THE ARU turned out to be a most enjoyable day! All member*. of the Stores Platoon are to be thanked for their sterling efforts in cleaning, painting and generally tidying the accom- modation. It is comforting to be able to see the new RAOC Stores Platoon building from my office, but also very frustrating. On the day Platoon was gleaming, but the Brigadier had decided that it was not our accommodation he wanted to inspect. At 8 am the Workshop was on parade in fighting order and ready for a long march round the countryside. The platoon was split into three sections of eight, with Captain Kerr and Lieutenant Hazlewood in the Officers team. The days com- petition involved marching thirty kilometres, interspersed with seven stands. The first team home was led by Captain Kerr, but all the teams are to be congratulated on their efforts. Sergeant Walsh decided that his team needed the extra exercise, he therefore never did take the direct route! Lance Corporal Kcv Hardman attempted to hang himself on the assault course, but apart from these incidents the day passed quietly. The soccer team has had a high scoring and needless to say successful month. The most important match was in the DOS Cup when as ' underdogs' we travelled to Dctmold to play 4 ADOC. The match was very exciting with the lead changing on several occasions, but the Stores Platoon were the eventual winners four two. The winning goals were scored by: Corporal Goulding one. Lance Corporal Hardman one and Private Saunders two. Private Saunders is also to be con- gratulated on his selection for the Corps soccer squad. The platoon has also played the following matches: there was an exciting draw versus 3RRF three three, victories against 4/7 DG three two, and 3RRF Band nine (wo. and unfortunately a defeat by 16 Tank Transporter Squadron seven nine. Staff Sergeant Beedham, Sergeant Brymer, and Lance Corporal Snelson have all worked hard to ensure that the team administration ran smoothly. The Unit rugby team has recently been winning more matches, the team is run by Captain Kerr, and Lieutenant Hazle- wood, with Corporal Bolton also playing for the team. The results to Christmas are: Played fourteen, won six, lost six, drawn two. The platoon has continued with its running, and in fact certain members have become so keen that one can see Corporal Byrne, Privates Jessop and Blazier running each lunch-time. Private Knight returned to the UK to canoe in the Army Championships and is to be congratulated on winning the slalom class white water championships. He must be our star of the month. Captain Kerr as usual has been busy playing squash and is to be congratulated on reaching the semi-finals of the Trophy Competition in the BAOR Championships. Snow Queen has now commenced, and our first casualty- has returned with his leg in plaster—Private Bennett, we wish him a swift recovery. Lieutenant Hazlewood is sadly leaving us to go to his ATO Course, he will be missed by the platoon, but we hope to see him again. He has put a great deal of effort into Unit sport, small bore shooting—and any social activity that he was invited to! The whole Unit wishes him well in the future. SERGEANT GEORDIE HOUSE, after some delicate negotiations with the RAF, managed to p r o c u r e p a r a c h u t e s for decorating the Gymnasium in preparation for the Sergeants Mess and Corporals Club ,. Christmas draws. Rumour has it that it —_^_^ ^ cost him a lot more than the two cases of \ep^7jffft£J2c|j beer he sent down to them but he's not " ^^-—^"^ letting on. He says he obtained them for certain people in case they got ' high.' He wanted to let them down gently. Lance Corporal Jock Falconer, who with masterly skill and impeccable sporting finesse, has guided the Staff Branch foot- ball team into the DOS Cup, went off to Holland for his Hols to stay with relatives. He says that there is no truth in the rumour that the CRAOCs fund is being used as a down pay- ment for a certain English footballer seeking to leave SV Hamburg at the end of the season. After last months BFT Saga, Corporal George Henry, with the help of fitness fanatic Staff Sergeant Alan (a ten mile run is just a warm-up) Cowlishaw, has obtained a level of fitness we would never have believed possible. He can now actually walk, unaided, to the start line of the BFT course before being seized by uncontrollable dread and collapsing in a gibbering heap. A football match, arranged against Headquarters REME, resulted in a respectable five to five draw and without a doubt the man of the match was our Second-in-Command, Major Jeremy Baines. His failure to score three goals, he says, was intentional and designed to scotch the rumour that there were any geriatric tendencies apparent (pun intended). Our S02 (Mats), being involved in discussions on under- manning, was beginning to think the first move in a centralisa- tion policy was being implemented after being summoned to Bielefeld by Corps three times in as many days. Talking of undermanning a rather interesting letter was sent to us by our Central Distribution Point in Hohne. It Was from the British Forces Broadcasting Service who provide English Television programmes for the Forces in Germany and says:— Mr James Saville OBE has assisted many people through his programme " Jim'll Fix I t " but very much regrets that he is unable to provide labour for your distribution point in Hohne. Ah well we can't win them all. Sadly this month we say goodbye to W02 Dave Coombs and his wife Carol who are leaving us to go to 4 Communica- tions GP in Cheltenham and also to Private Louis Serbatoio who prepares to launch himself on to the unsuspecting German public as a civilian. Good luck to all of you. We welcome into the fold W02 John Sexton and his wife Lynn, also our new C6 civilian clerk Herr Peter Raeder, and hope that they will all enjoy their stay here in Verden. Finally we leave you with the following quote from our Second-in-Command, overheard when Corporal George Henry who, having made a mistake, said " nobody's perfect" and 79 SUPPLY DEPOT (THE 'FIGHTING' 79th) received a rather curt reply " I agree, it's just that some people WE welcome Captain Alan David Hopper who is our new have further to go to get there than others "! Second-in-Command and his wife, we hope they have a very (Regret that the cartoon arrived too late for publication—- enjoyable stay. vill keep it for future use—Editor.) Corporal Macintyre is back with us after successfully com- ORDNANCE COMPANY pleting his Bl course—glad to have you back and of course THE Company organised the Ken Dodd Show on behalf of well done! NAAFI. It was well attended by the soldiers and their families At the moment Major Byles is on Exercise Snow Queen from Soltau, Munsterlager, Fallingbostel and everyone had a with his wife. Thinking about last year's weather here at super evening. Hohne they are probably practising for this year's. It was noticed recently that the CSM was sending boxes daily on the CDP vehicles (rumour control had it that he was being — 293 — posted) not so, just getting rid of all the leaves said he! The Unit has also been busy on the Regimental scene. |
