ALTHOUGH Christmas 1979 will be just

history to readers of the February GAZETTE,
^^^Q^^^k
the past few weeks have become a blur of

frenzied activity which may be best

recorded when the mind is sufficiently clear

to determine the true highlights. Mean-

while, let us examine the events of Elles
__________
Barracks during the last few weeks of this
decade.
The inevitable round of inspections has now commenced
and this is no place for tabulating such affairs. However we
must mention that we decided to test the ability of the RADC
when arranging our dental inspection. This was completed in
the field, the dentists passing map reading, field craft and lamp
swinging, and we failing the initiative test as even our expert
dental-inspection dodgers could not escape this one. Our photo
shows GSM Flowers (the Artful Dodger) in the chair.

We have managed to convince another member of the
Blues and Royals that the RAOC is able to offer him a fuller
career as a Supply Clerk. Lance Corporal Burgess joined us
last month when he was presented with his Corps badge, lan-
yard and stable belt by CRAOC. We are particularly fortunate
as Records have agreed that he can stay with us for a full tour.
St Barbara's Day was celebrated by all ranks and their
families attending a drumhead service in our old gymnasium.
This was conducted by our local Chaplain who made a particular
point of addressing the soldiers on the theme of the day. In
support were a twelve piece section of the band of the Royal
Welch Fusiliers who splendidly entertained and accompanied us
throughout All concerned, including our guests Colonel and
Mrs Istead, later retired to the Park Inn for curry lunch.
The rugger XV has won yet another match but not so
cheerful news for the hockey and basketball teams now elimina-
ted from the local KO Cup competitions. The soccer team is
suffering varied form by losing to RAOC Fallingbostel in the
DOS Cup but leading the Division League.
Congratulations go to Lance Corporal Ayris on earning his
first stripe and a very big welcome goes to our new arrivals,
Corporal Boyle, Lance Corporal Little and Private Hughes.
Alex Ramage. Barbados here he comes. He has earned it.
he's played football for the Unit, Regiment and Corps all
season. We hope by the time of press he will have helped to
win the Craftsman's Cup and then (Football Officer) can wc have
him back? In March he goes on his EPC followed by his RFC
and then in May we lose him to Northern Ireland on posting.
Honestly, those courses are not victimisation or jealously over
your holiday.
Sergeant Bill Hail like Corporal Ramage likes open spaces
and RAOC M and RO obliged by detaching him. prior to post-
ing, to Munsterlager. Bill and his wife Betty will be missed by
all and we wish them and their children all the best.
Corporal Terry McGaghey has now left on promotion to
Sergeant, he also will be sadly missed not only by the Platoon
but by the Unit as a whole. He has gone to 48 AMF(I.)
Company in Devizes. But not for long, I believe he has a nic»
three month winter holiday planned in Norway. Send us a
postcard Terry. Best wishes for the future go to Terry and
Trish and baby Haley.
Corporal Geoff Strange is the next to go. he is going hi
1 (BR) Corps Vehicle Company, but like Terry he isn't staying
long. He has a nice six month break in Canada lined up.
during the summer as well. Geoff has had the hair raising job
of taking Private Steve Purves out on HGV2 training. All
that could be heard from the cab was, " How am I going to
get my films developed with all this manoeuvring?" exclaims
Purves. " Start again," replies Strange. It's a hard life being a
trucker Steve.
Steve, in between arguing with Geoff in the cab of the AEC.
has been employed in various photography jobs around the
Regiment Which I believe he is enjoying apart from the
constant phone calls from the RSM asking for his enlargements.
The BTS which Steve runs hasn't been too busy but if you were
to ask him he would disagree.
Corporal Dinger Bell has been lucky in the Christmas Draw
and early next year he will be promoted to Sergeant. Con-
gratulations Dinger. Dinger has also been busy recently with
his BTS. With Private John Miles being posted in from 48
Company, Dinger expected to hand over—but it wasn't to be.
John has volunteered for a tour in Northern Ireland with 64
Squadron. So after a short stay in BAOR with us he's off in
March to Long Kesh for four months. When John returns he
should have been promoted. Well done.
Private Russ Eddison has been working away very hard
over the last few months. His hard work has been rewarded
as he also is to be promoted in the New Year.
Not much we can really say about Private Geordie
Flannaghan as he has been away for the last two months on
Regimental Police Duty. He also managed to be selected for
the Regimental Squad at boxing. It seems that he is doing okay
as his nose doesn't seem to be very flat. Not even a cauli-
flower ear to talk about We wait open armed for his return.
Corporal John Bailey says he has only a few jobs for him.
Which brings us to the workers of the Platoon.
Corporal
John Bailey and Lance Corporal Tony Welland. John and
Tony are responsible for running the ' B ' Vehicle and M2B
Storehouses respectively. Tony has been busy rearranging his
store due to the recent move of the major assemblies bay next to
our cage. He had to move all the serviceable assemblies back
inside our cage just in case they went missing which the
REME constantly remind us would never happen. Tony also
goes on his RPC1 course early in the New Year. John has been
in the process of teaching Private John Miles the various
storehouse procedures, which he will have to learn again when
he comes back from Long Kesh.
As reported a few months back Lieutenant Paul Harris is
still doing well in the rally scene, he recently came eighteenth
m Exercise Roadmaster, the Army Driving Championships.
You can now come in Sir, you are posted on the 21st
December and are going on your Ammunition Officers Course
in January. We would also like to say " Thanks and Farewell "
to his wife Jean and wish them both well.
We would all like to welcome our new boss Second Lieu-
tenant Matthew Davis; his progress will, of course, be extensively
reported.
All W02 Tom Griffiths can mumble each day is, " Here
we go again."
