PASSCHABNDALE PROVISIONING IN-PENSIONER BILL MILLHOUSE of the Royal Hospital Chelsea and late Royal Lincolns, visited ADPI at Bicester recently. If getting stores was hard in the Great War ! His seven day stay at Graven Hill Sergeants Mess in- cluded a helibom visit to the USAF at Heyford. The escorts in our picture are, by the fire alarm, WOl Brian Edmondson then W02 Bob Corbey, WOl Graham Hartley and seated Staff Sergeant Derek Vale. The big bang. MAKING ELBOW ROOM DEMOLITION in a big way during Exercise Elbow Room carried out by the Army School of Ammunition at Otterbury. It was never like this FORTY FIVE YEARS ON WE record the final retirement after some forty five years service, of a very popular member of the CRAOC North East District Headquarters staff, Major Joe Padley (Retd). Major Padley joined the Lincolnshire Regiment in 1935, transferred to the Corps three years later, retiring from full time service in York in 1969 and, after a short break in the Insurance world, returning to the fold as a Retired Officer in what was then Headquarters Northern Command where he became our oracle on all matters Ordnance and undisputed master mind of mobilisation. Corporal Fletcher giving critical attention to the technique of Sergeant Ball who is presenting his best side to the camera. MODEL, MEMORIES ON his farewell tour of the Headquarters Northern Ireland Lieutenant General Sir Timothy Creasey was trapped in CRAOCs Office and a small presentation on behalf of all Ranks RAOC was made jointly by CRAOC, CATO and the CO of Ordnance Depot. The gift was a very fine detailed scale model of a Wheelbarrow EOD type! made by the apprentices of MVEE, and we trust it will provide an occasional fond memory of Ulster in his new UKLF surroundings. Major Joe Padley finally retires at York after almost unbroken service since 1 9 3 5 . He was dined out of the District Officers Mess in most splendid style with the entire Headquarters Officers massed in attendance; mind you lest it be thought that this was solely in Joe's honour, the departing GOC was also being dined out on the same evening. The photograph shows Lieutenant Colonel Jeff Morton, who deputed for CRAOC, presenting a decanter to Major Padley on behalf of the military and civilian staff. We wish both him and his wife a very happy retirement. — 304 — OFFICERS CLUB A MEMBERS PLEA WILL those Officers Club Members who have not yet returned their Bankers Orders to cover the increased cost of THE GAZETTE, please do so as soon as possible. |
