TRAVERS THE CORPS CROSS C O U N T R Y CHAMPIONSHIPS THE Corps Cross Country Championships were held at the Training Centre and although fewer runners took part than last year, the quality was probably higher than for a number of years. The race, started by the DGOS, was run over the Corps course of five and a half miles and even the sun shone as the General dropped the flag to set nearly a hundred com- petitors on their way. From the start, Sergeant Mick Binks, the current BAOR individual champion and Army representative, stamped his authority on the race and made light of the undulating but firm course. At the end of the first lap Binks led Lieutenant Andy Shepherd by fifty yards. At this stage the team event looked to be a direct confrontation between FOD Dulmen and the Training Centre with Dulmen slightly ahead. On the last lap, Binks increased his lead to two hundred yards over Shepherd and in the process broke his own course record by over a minute, winning in the record time of 28 minutes 05. Third and fourth places were filled by Dulmen runners Stanton and Lonnen, who in turn were closely followed by Bolt and Hladkij of the Training Centre. The final team result was closer than for many years with Dulmen just edging the Training Centre by six points with 7 Field Force (Ord) in third place. CLARKE ATHLETICS 1980 THE Travers Clarke Athletics Meeting will be held at the Military Stadium, Aldershot, on Thursday, 12th June, 1980. It has been customary in'the past to stage the meeting over two days but this year the whole event will be held on the one day only. This should make it easier for Units to participate and result in more and stronger entries. Running all the events in a single day will also produce a fuller programme and a livelier spectacle and it is hoped that there will be many more spectators than in recent years. The Stadium has excellent bar and refreshment facilities and the meeting is an enjoyable social occasion as well as being the Corps premier sporting event. It provides an excellent opportunity for serving and retired members of the Corps and their families to meet while at the same time supporting and encouraging those taking part in the athletics, and all will be warmly welcome. It is hoped that this year's meeting will be exceptionally well supported both by teams and by spectators. Do please come along. GLIDING GOLD COLONEL TED SHEPHARD of Control Division, Directorate of Supply Management, has won the Kingshurst Gold Trophy for Gliding, an award which he gained whilst flying in the Army Team during the National Championships. The award was presented by Air Marshal Sir Keith Williamson and is for the most meritorious flight in inter-service competition. Our con- gratulations.
