sedate pastures of Regional Depot Thatcham; his relief is Lieutenant Colonel Bill Stark who joined us from Headquarters UKLF. We wish Lieutenant Colonel Janes all the best in his new appointment and wc welcome Lieutenant Colonel Stark who now sits in the big office which looks even bigger with no furniture now that Janes Removals Ltd have called. The turnover of permanent staff continues. Captain Pat Graham has handed over the appointment of OIC Clerical Training to Captain Frank Buckett (who spends most of his time on courses) and has gone for a three year holiday in Hong Kong. Staff Sergeant Chris Mabbott has at last handed over as Chief Clerk of the School and gone to Corps Troops in Bielefeld. His job is now being done by Sergeant Tom Dooley who was formerly an Advanced Clerical Instructor. Our Butchery Training Branch, which is located at the Abattoir in Aldcrshot, continues to produce meat of the highest standard. From April, butchery training, (except at class 1), will cease and the Branch will then run food courses which all include work on meat and bread production. The IOC Captain Jim Griffiths, and his capable Second-in-Command WOl Eric Burrell, will both be posted. The Branch will then be run by WO) Dave Jackson who will be assisted by Sergeants Micic Miller and Charlie Potts. We have no doubt that the quality of their food output will remain the same. Training Centre THE Cross Country season in the Training Centre has been functioning quietly, with several events sponsored by the Royal Navy; the annual fixture with the Surrey Constabulary was also held at Mount Browne. The Army Apprentices College formed the bulk of the team and provided most of the points for a win by eighty nine points to one hundred and twenty two. Even Major Malcolm Bryant of the School of Ordnance belied his many years by coming half way with Major Robin Watts of equal age not too far adrift, an example to the younger brethren. In the Corps Championships, featured on page 308 the Training Centre put out two teams. In the knowledge that FOD Dulmen and RAOC Cyprus had made the effort to travel, the competition amongst nearly one hundred runners was to be intense. In the event it was a close team race with the result based on six runners to count, it was second place for the Training Centre 'A' team with forty two points, with FOD Dulmen only six points ahead. The ' B ' Team came seventh out of nine teams. THE APPRENTICES COLLEGE A COMPANY. Life has once again resumed here in 'A' Com- pany with the start of a new term. We are able to look back at a very successful winter term, which culminated with the Pageant and Passing Out Parade for Ardennes Platoon. The weather was kind and the Ap- prentices were able to give a good performance which was much appreciated by all who attended. We were fortunate to have Lieutenant General Sir George Cooper, GOC South East District, as the Inspecting Officer. On the reporting side of life, we had many Apprentices from 'A' Company representing the College. A/Private Dalton successfully captained the Rugby 1st XV which, after a shaky start to the season, eventually came good with a good win over the RAMC Apprentices College. The Permanent Staff, much to their credit, produced a XV to play the College team. After a hard fought game the staff eventually beat the College by a score too narrow to put in print. The backbone of the team was provided by 'A' Company stalwarts, the most notice- able of these being Captain John Hardcastle who, despite ad- vancing years, played very well. A/Sergeant Saxon captained a Soccer 1st XI who unfortunately were stretched by a shortage of players. The Cross Country Cup this term went to 'A' Company, while Arakan Platoon became the first recruit platoon to win the Platoon Cup. They also went on to win the Company Assault March Cup. We have said farewell to Captain Wood and Captain Jaggers who go to Bovington and Celle respectively. We all wish both them and their families well for the future. Sergeant Daniel, Anguilla Platoon, has also left us to' return to the REME in Osnabruck and to him and his family again our best wishes for the future. We welcome Sergeant Gatley from BAOR. He has been T r a i n i n g Centre ' A ' T e a m : Corporal H l a d k i j , Corporal H a w k i n s , Lieutenant Colonel Curtis, Lieutenant Shepherd, Major B r i g h t m a n , Private H e n r y , Private M c C i l l , Lieutenant B o t t , Captain Jelly. CENTRAL VOLUNTEER HEADQUARTERS LIEUTENANT COLONEL RAY DICKEY, our S02 AQ, was admitted to the Cambridge Military Hospital last week. The best wishes of all the staff go to him, and we hope he has a speedy recovery. Colonel John Gregan, our Commander, sucessfully met the DGOS' challenge to the Over Forties. Well done. It is a pleasant change to see our two Training Captains in the office together, Captain Ian Turner having just returned from a ski-ing holiday in Switzerland. They won't be together for long though, as Captain Chris Burrow is already making plans for his next trip to BAOR—and Cyprus? It is understood that very recently a photograph was taken of the senior ranks of CVHQ permanent staff. When a copy is produced we will examine it carefully and decide if it is safe to publish it, maybe next month. TRAINING BATTALION AND DEPOT ADJUTANTS come and Adjutants go and so do their dogs. Peter Foxton has gone to Staff College with Flop and Keith Fisher has arrived with Syn. The COs carpet continues very hairy. We will not regale you with a long list of functions held over the Christmas period but the Fancy Dress football match, Officers v The Rest must be mentioned. Baby Doll Tony Franklin was in great demand by the spectators, the CO refereed with great aplomb in topper and tails and RSM Jim Stephen lost his wig, handbag and bicycle clips. Congratulations go to Lance Corporal Ronnie James, for during January he successfully defended his Army Individual Light Welterweight title and also won his bout in an Army v RAF contest. EMPLOYMENT TRAINING SCHOOL THE major recent event has been the changeover of Com- mandants. Lieutenant Colonel John Janes has departed for the — T h e COC talks to A / P r i v a t e Castle at t h e Passing Out Parade for Ardennes Platoon. 312 — |
