Transcription 1 Ammunition I D U
CRAOC South West District, Colonel J. Harvcrson, presents
Mr Clifford Cavill with the Imperial Service Medal.
M r Cavill
served with the RAF during W o r l d W a r II and in 1 9 4 6 left
the RAF to work as a Labourer in the Supply Reserve Depot,
Taunton.
Since then he has worked as a Storemen with
Barrack Services RASC and subsequently with RAOC.
of all his bits and pieces, he will be commissioned at the end
of May—his relief is WOl Terry Williams ex-NORTHAG.
To turn to other matters. As a result of Fair Value, the
OSU Bovington closes at the end of March and the OSU
Weyhill assumes these additional responsibilities. When the
OC OSU Coypool, Major Fred Taylor, retires in April the
military cover will be lost and the appointment of OC will be
assumed by the SOG ' C,' Mr Jack Hockley.
Major (OEO) Gordon Rudd, the OC ASU South West
District, has recently been promoted to Lieutenant Colonel.
We offer our congratulations and understand that at long last
one of our Retired Officers (Lieutenant Colonel Bill Griffin),
has finally got even with him over a bottle of wine that cost
him £14 five years ago.
STORES SECTION 32 GW REGIMENT
WORKSHOP
ONCE again Salisbury Plain is experiencing almost Siberian
weather—perhaps ' Plain ' could be changed to ' Steppes.' The
annual PRE approaches with all that it entails, as we are well
committed with Operation Banner Tours, Operation Aguila and
Exercise Hardfall. Humour and laughter still prevail and we
manage to squeeze in the courses, detachments and range
days.
Corporal Lofty Sugden just back from a Bl Clerks Course
returned with thoughts of education courses! We hear that
Lofty is shortly to ' name the day.' Corporal Ken Kelly is
now back from four weeks in Canada and immediately volun-
teered for Belize. (Perhaps he wanted to thaw out!). Corporal
Alan Kilminster (" What about my leave, ' Q ' " ) is still wait-
ing for his posting to Cyprus (who's not—and the return of his
TV set.) We hear that his wife Maureen is expecting their
new arrival in April.
Corporal Taff Lovejoy, our ever eager TIFL Driver, has
found a new hobby, tea making. Corporal Andy Gemmell we
are sure is enjoying his sojourn in Kentucky, USA.
The boss man W02 Jim Dyer is still smiling(!) and braving
the elements on his moped. Despite the very fast time on his
BFT the world three mile record is still intact.
SATO NORTH. The main activity for the SATO office.at the
end of this year was organising the winter EOD licencing
exercise. We eventually achieved our aim of terrorising the
police forces of five counties during a week of concentrated
activity on the outskirts of Warrington. The main lesson to
be drawn from these exercises is that it is relatively simple to
summon up twelve EOD teams and three hundred policemen
compared with the superhuman effort involved in prising a single
cook out of the ACC. Any AT or driver who fancies his
chances with a spatula should apply through Records for a
posting to Catterick.
New Year so far has been devoted exclusively to getting
SATO organised for his next posting.
ATO Catterick has reported the loss of two seasoned
campaigners.
WOl Brian Cushman has left for the Army
School of Ammunition, saying that he has waited throughout
his career for a chance to get hold of an ATO course. Staff
Sergeant Mick Morrison has finally gone to Germany, and
prudent shareholders in Scottish and Newcastle Breweries have
sold their stocks. Staff Sergeant Mo Allen and his wife are to
be congratulated on their foresight in having their son, Steven,
born at the Duchess of Kent's Military Hospital, thereby qualify-
ing him to play for Yorkshire. Sergeant Gough continues to
send us postcards from Belize, having had his RHE put off yet
again. He is rumoured to have cut off his ear and taken up
painting. If you read this, Sergeant Gough, can I sell your
motorbike?.
ATO Liverpool had their second successive busy Christmas,
rushing around peering into other peoples' mail. Suggestions
that the disastrous fire at St John's Precinct was the result of
one of the ATO's render safe procedures have been firmly
denied.
Central Ordnance Depot Donnington
THE DGOS paid his official farewell visit to Donnington in
January and the RAOC members of the Warrant Officers and
Sergeants Mess had the honour of entertaining Major General
Callan to dinner. The DGOS appeared to enjoy his evening
and in commenting on the excellent ' banquet' stated that he
would not attempt the DGOS Challenge for the next three
or four days! He took the presentation of a 'Superman/DGOS'
caricature in the best of spirit. The DGOS is seen here with
Brigadier Ray Thornton and WOl Stu Hudson.
Members of COD Donnington Corporals Club gave a
helping hand at a party held for handicapped children at the
local Trench TA Centre. From left to right: Corporal (Mick)
Rothery (foreground), Lance Corporal (Dave) Mason-Flucke
ACC (disco operator), Lance Corporal (Pete) Bland ACC and
Corporal (Bob) Frame. Major Norma Heath has now taken
over the reins of OC WRAC and Major Sue Taylor has
departed for Guildford.
Severe weather has curtailed our outdoor sporting activities
(faint cries of 'shame!' from the aforementioned pale and
paunchy brethren). W02 Julian Thompson, who compiles the
sports page, reports that the basketball season is now well under
way and with a little help from the US Army in the form of
Colonel (Clint) Hodder, plus son Clint junior at times, the
SUPPLY DEPOT BULFORD
THE main event of the period was the news that the Com-
mander-in-Chief United Kingdom Land Forces had approved
the award of his Certificate for Meritorious Service to Mrs Joan
Blakemore of our Indents Office.
A flying visit to the Depot was made by Mr Horswell of
the Raynor Committee and amongst others he was accompanied
by Mr Carter, The Director of Victualling and Lieutenant David
Carey from Ord 2. Colonel John Harverson our CRAOC
was also present.
Sergeant Jim Sharrock travels up to London every
Wednesday, where he assures us that he is attending the
Royal Society of Health Meat Inspection Course, whilst Sergeant
Bob Roadnight had to make do with a week in Leicester with
Records on the Documentation Course!
