Headquarters
BAOR
WELCOME Sergeant Black (ex-Cavalry) into
the Corps. The photograph shows Sergeant
Black receiving his Ordnance " halo' from
Colonel Harry Brown (Colonel Ordnance
Organisation and Plans).
The awe of the
occasion is obvious by the expression on
Sergeant Black's face. He completed his pro-
bationary with MS Branch and now takes
over from Sergeant Stone in G Training who
hopes to be on his way for a tour of duty in
Pakistan soon.
Our RAOC Rheindahlen Cross Country team under the
captaincy of Staff Sergeant Marsh (W02 Boshier, Staff Sergeant
Quigley, Sergeants Cutler and Black, Corporals Eaton, Whitting-
ton and Sanders) proved a thorn in the side of the Corps
Champions, Dulmen, when at the recent BAOR RAOC Cham-
pionships, they were so close in the final scoring that the
decision was all on the sixth placed runner. Dulmen retained
their ' crown' but they had better watch out next year. The
teams final position (six to count) were Staff Sergeant Marsh
second, Corporal Eaton fourth, our new Corpsman Sergeant
Black fifth, Corporal Whittington eighth, Sergeant Cutler tenth
and in sixth place Staff Sergeant Quigley twenty eighth. Staff
Sergeant Marsh took individual second prize and Sergeant Black
won the thirty to thirty five age group prize.
Also on a physical /sporting theme congratulations go to
Lieutenant Colonel Mike Mafhams on qualifying for his fourth
annual seal on his ' DGOS Over Forties Challenge' certificate.
In the absence of our WOl Ron Thornton on a (swan)
course in UK, W02 John Last, on loan from P and WSU in
Viersen, is keeping the Ord 6c paper flowing. Our branch
Chief Clerk W02 Sam Johnson has been heard to whisper
" Thank goodness there's another Staff Clerk in the Directorate,
even if he is Work Study trained."
The old saying that " action speaks louder than words"
certainly is true by the way that Sergeant Tom Dewhurst has
been jumping down ' F ' corridor and humming " tie me
Kangaroo down sport." He has just returned from Exercise
Long Look in Australia.
Our final congratulations go to Corporal Jim Earthy and
his wife Phyllis on their recent addition to the family, a
daughter, Victoria.

If the cap fits
put up sterling performances against tough International com-
petition in such sports as handball, volleyball and basketball.
We are very fortunate here at AFCENT to have such a versatile
sportsman as Paddy Stanway, who as well as being an excellent
basketball player, also plays in goal for our AFCENT Knights
football team, and scrumhalf for the AFCENT Knights rugby
team. On top of all this, he is a fierce all-round competitor in
track and field events.
Congratulations are due to W02 Doug Liddel, who received
the Commander-in-Chiefs and Air Officer Commanding's Com-
mendation in conjunction with the New Year's Honours List.
Doug is now at the ' sharp end,' having been' posted to the
British Embassy in Pakistan at the end of last year.
Also in line for congratulations are Captain Colin Robinson
(you can't keep him out of the news!) and Corporal John
AFCENT
IN Holland, at this time of year, many of
the local population can be seen skimming
over the frozen canals and ponds, indulging
in their favourite winter sport of skating.
Although many Corps members have
yet to become proficient at staying upright
on the ice, they have certainly been showing
their skills in a number of sporting com-
petitions that have taken place at AFCENT
recently.
Towards the end of last year the first
modern Triathlon was held at this Head-
quarters, and Captain Colin Robinson, our
Executive Officer, distinguished himself by
coming third in the overall competition,
first in the veterans class, second in the
shooting competition and third in the running event.
This demanding competition took place over three days and
included stiff tests of fitness in running, swimming and shooting.
With the uncertainty over whether the Olympic Games will
take place, we at AFCENT have been holding our own 'mini
Olympics.'
Captain Colin Robinson, Staff Sergeant Kevin
Hudson, Sergeant Paddy Stanway and Corporal Archie Hender-
son represented the Corps in the United Kingdom team and
f

For his fine sporting achievements in the Modern Triathlon,
