urban areas, such as Greater London, Greater Manchester, Tyne
and Wear, Merseyside—all favoured for Army recruiting and
resettlement by ex-Servicemen. Inevitably therefore they are
the centres where SSAFA is most needed but where potential
volunteers are harder to find.
SSAFA representatives must be genuinely caring people,
full of commonsense and willing to learn. Obviously, experience
in the Services, either as an Officer or senior NCO, or as the
wife, widow or husband of either, is valuable. Training is
provided, both in the field with an experienced worker and
also at a SSAFA Induction Course either at Head Office in
London or in the appropriate County. Expenses are paid and
all necessary literature and stationery are provided.
Offers will be welcomed directly at the local County Office
of SSAFA or may be sent to SSAFA Head Office, 27 Queen
Anne's Gate, London SW1H 9BZ.

GOLF—THE RAOC
AND SPRING
NEEDED
DURING 1978, the last year for which complete figures are
available, SSAFA Branches in the United Kingdom helped a
total of twenty four thousand two hundred and three financial,
welfare and advisory cases concerning Army families at an
operating cost of £82,840.
Of eleven thousand four hundred and forty eight financial
grants amounting to £456,737 made to Army families, some nine
thousand two hundred and fifty eight representing £415,511 were
disbursed on behalf of the Regimental and Corps benevolent
funds.
Those figures prove beyond doubt the practical efficiency
of the good working partnership between SSAFA and the Regi-
mental funds.
SSAFA is not primarily a grant-making organisation. Its
role is to provide a service to the families of Serving and ex-
Service men and women, to Commanding Officers and to the
Regimental and Corps benevolent funds, all of whom use the
SSAFA nationwide network of voluntary workers to visit and
report on their family cases and distribute their generosity.
To do this SSAFA must continue to recruit new voluntary
workers to replace the many dedicated people now retiring
after many years of valuable work. The need is greatest in the

WE REGAIN PALESTINE CUP
AFTER FIFTEEN
YEARS
RAOC 4 POINTS
REME NIL
ON a wet and windswept afternoon at the Petroleum Centre
West Moors the Corps Rugby XV carried off the Palestine
Cup. With total forward domination they gave REME no
respite and the single unconverted try, scored in the second half
by Corporal Balding of Longtown, was sufficient to carry the
game. (A full report will be in next months GAZETTE).
