Central Ammunition Depot Kineton THIS month has seen the farewell visit by Major General Callan and during a very successful day he presented the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal to Staff Sergeant Ward and Sergeant Oatley of REME. The Adjutant—Captain Adrian Stone is walking around looking like one of his dogs only with an extra tail telling everyone how ' his ' office has ' aced i t ' again by gaining another excellent grading on the Annual Documentation Inspection. Anyone would think he did all the work, when we all know that it was the efforts of the Orderly Room Staff both military and civilian—not for- getting ' D o c ' Forbes in the Medical Centre who were really responsible. In 'A' Company assault-course training is now well under way as preparation for the Inter-Company competition in a months time. Staff Sergeant Curly Thynne, the team trainer, is currently whipping up volunteers but Captain Brown has evaded the net as he is presently on crutches following a basket-ball match last week—a non-contact sport! Staff Sergeant John Robinson has started a sports museum with the theme ' Games ATs play while awaiting ammunition.' A collection of ' bats and balls * now grace the Line Supervisors' Office. No wonder our stocks of pallet furniture and jungle tape have dwindled of late. We have just formed a CAD Kineton rock climbing and mountaineering club supervised by SSI Larndcr A PTC and at the moment are steadily getting together a good pool of equip- ment for the coming year. Weekend trips to North Wales, the Lakes and the Peak District are planned, with the eventual aim of going to Norway in the summer of 1981. WRAC ' Mentions' this month arc for Staff Sergeant Mullany and Lance Corporal Gridley who won the doubles championships and Staff Sergeant Mullany the singles in the W/Area Table Tennis Championships. Private Evans who won a silver medal in the Army Womcns Judo Championships (Black Belt). In badminton Lance Corporals Blackburn and Gridley (just promoted) won the doubles championship?. Lance Corporal Blackburn the singles in the W/Arca championships. They both go forward to play in the Intcrzone Championships. In driving Privates Goldsborough. Rayncr and Lance Corporal Campbell have achieved HGV Class 1. Private Rayncr in fact, whilst training for her HGV 1 at Lcconficld was there with her father who was on the HGV Instructors Course. Finally Private Lloyd participated in a sponsored canoe race, raising money for the Olympic Appeal. The Kineton Station canoe club held a sponsored lone distance canoe paddle in aid of the National Olympic Appeal from Leamington Spa to Stratford-upon-Avon, a distance of some seventeen miles. Severe flooding made the trip extremely- hazardous which resulted in Sergeant Nunn's canoe being broken in three pieces and one other canoe also being badly- damaged. It is hoped to realise the sum of £350—if all who pledged their monies pay up! General Central Vehicle Depot VEHICLE DEPOT LUDGERSHALL IT has been a very busy month for all of us. We have seen our Volvo Section trained, innoculated. documentatcd, kitted and finally moved out to Norway on Exercise Hard Fall with 48 Company AMF(L). There has been a lot of activity in readiness for the forthcoming I of E team, with everybody poring over their Job Description determined to be in the ' know' when they arrive. Our congratulations to Staff Sergeant Roy Davis and Sergeant Ralph Jackson our Chief Clerk having passed their recent EPC(A) Examination, to W02 Paddy Quinn on passing his QTO Course and to Staff Sergeant John Banner on his MHE Handling Course. We welcome our recent arrivals, W02 Quinn, Staff Sergeants Wick and Seymour, Corporal Betts and Lance Corporal Allan who have all now settled in and are very much a part of the team. Alas we say farewell to Lance Corporal Dave Izzard on return to civilian life, along with Staff Sergeant Dougy Hirst and to Captain Ritchie on posting to Headquarters BAOR, Corporal Chris Allen to 1 (BR) Corps (as Sergeant), Private ' P o p ' McAleese to Northern Ireland and Private Curtain and Lance Corporal Wells to Aldershot and Recklinghausen respectively. In ' hot' pursuit W02 Dave Hutchinson is posted to sunny Hong Kong and W02 Nigel Smith to BATUS, both on promotion, and Staff Sergeant John Banner is posted this month to Headquarters Wales, Brecon. If nothing else, we have suffered our fair share of turbulence. Lance Corporals Derrick Cowell, Ian Carey and Jonathan Sword are all doing their bit in Northern Ireland and we wish them a quiet time. Lance Corporal Kevin Wignall has detached himself voluntarily to Belize and Lance Corporal Taffy Webb and Corporal Wally Williamson have both opted for eight months in Canada. With only half our establishment present at any one time it's amazing that the British Army is getting any armoured vehicles at all. However, if you are single and below the rank of Corporal put in your posting preference for Ludgershall now. We can offer the variety of driving 'A' vehicles, helping with the Aider- shot Show, dumping Ammunition at sea, driving Eager Beavers round the Salisbury or North German Plain, the number two job in an EOD team and many other recreational facilities. You don't know what you have been missing until you have a posting to Ludgershall. Callan presents the Long Service and Good Medal to Staff Sergeant W a r d at Kineton. Conduct Continuing in the sporting vein, 'A' Company provided most of the members of the CAD cross-country team in the Corps championships. It was here that DLSA was heard to say that ATs cannot run, much to the chagrin of Corporals Kettle, Hurry, McLachlin and O'Brian. Captain Moules, Corporal Edwards. Lance Corporals Croft and Gault and Private Williams also participated from this Company. Two wanderers have returned to the fold, Corporal Tony Corr from civvy street and a slimline version of Lance Corporal Harry Pelling from Belize. We welcome Captain Ken Moules, WOl John Rolison, W02 Burkin. Staff Sergeant Andy Brown, Sergeant ' Slim' Dean, Corporal Dave Cotterill, Lance Corporal Ward and Private Mayo. In Small Bore Shooting the club has a small but active membership, and in the four postal league competitions fired, we have won ten out of twelve rounds. WOl Mick Pugh and Staff Sergeant John Hooper continue to lead the averages table and have again been chosen to represent Western District in the Army Rifle Association Inter District Match. A newcomer who deserves mention is Corporal Geoff Palir who has improved his average since joining the club sufficiently to walk off with the clubs Macrae Handicap Competition for Winter 1979. In hockey despite a poor start to the season the team has been turning in some fine performances of late. Much of the improvement is due to Team Secretary/Organiser/Coach and Captain, Sergeant Lee Hayter who has been keeping members of the team up to scratch with twice weekly sessions of stamina building and skill improvement exercises and our success is due in the main to good teamwork and fitness. VEHICLE DEPOT HILTON THIS month's letter starts on a sombre note for the Head- quarters because we have to report the illness of Mrs Joyce Nicholls, our typist, and Mrs Sally Smith, our cleaner. To both these ladies go our best wishes for rapid recovery. Another casualty, Joan Plume, has had a couple of weeks in hospital but is now happily back with us again. Jackie Hackett has again left us to assume the full responsibilities of domesticity. — 355 — |
