THE RAOC (BAOR) SMALL ARMS MEETING T H E R A O C (BAOR) Small Arms Meeting took place at Haltern Ranges. This was the first time the Meeting had been held for five years and the magnificent support for (he occasion fully justified its re-introduction. A total of thirty teams participated from BAOR, Antwerp and Berlin. The Meeting was administered by Headquarters R A O C 4th Armoured Division under the Chairmanship of Lieutenant Colonel Willis. Inevitably, therefore, the detailed administrative burden fell on his Secretary, Major Evans and 4th Armoured Division Ordnance Company, who worked like trojans to en- sure everything went smoothly. The first day commenced with the Roupell Cup and S M G Matches. It was clear that the difficulties in obtaining practice time on electric target ranges has an effect on competitors scores, particularly in the rapid snap practices. Nevertheless there was keen competition to gel into the T o p Thirty. The Shooting Division Sergeant S M G Match was a close contest until the very end. standards were high and eventually the 4th Armoured Ordnance Company team won the event, with Staff Kelly of that Unit winning the Individual Cup. T h e second day commenced with the T o p Thirty shoot-off. This resulted in a tie between Sergeant King of the Head- quarters Rhine Area and Lance Corporal Henry of 2nd Armoured Division Ordnance Company, with the latter eventually winning the second shoot-off. The L M G pairs match proved the old axiom that time spent in preparation is seldom wasted; as those who lost barrels, slings and magazines on the run down found to their cost. T h e eventual winning pair were 1 Combat Supplies Battalion B team. Concurrently the Pistol X X X Match was being fired and it was pleasing to see so many of the old and bold competing. Private Port of 1 Combat Supplies Battalion—winner of the Young Soldier Competition is presented with the trophy by Brigadier Crawley. W 2 Timms of 79 Supply Depot was the clear winner with Lance Corporal Bowen of 1 (BR) Corps Vehicle Company the runner-up. The final match was the Falling Plate which proved a fitting climax to the two days. Competition was fierce and it was fortunate that DOS BAOR agreed to adjudicate as chief time- keeper—few were prepared to argue with his all singing, all dancing song digital! In the final Headquarters R A O C Rhine Area pipped Ord- nance Depot Antwerp on the last plate. Brigadier Crawley presented the trophies and prizes and paid tribute lo the unstinting assistance given to the organizing committee by F O D Dulmen and F A D Wulfen, and the excellent range organization run by Major Heap, Captain Binns and CSM Flowers. One of the aims of the meeting was to provide R A O C soldiers in BAOR with match practise prior to the R A O C Corps Small Arms Meeting at Ash Ranges this month. Hopefully this year our thirty representatives from BAOR will bring back a bigger share of the trophies this time.
