AFCENT
FASTEST moving member of the Corps
at AFCENT is undoubtedly Corporal
Archie Henderson, currently making a name
for himself in the dangerous and demanding
sport of rallying. In his twin-cam Toyota
Corolla SR 1600 (0.60 in 8.5 seconds) he
was overall winner of the RAF Germany
Motor Sports Association Rally—the only
Army entrant ever to win this event, and
third in his class in the British Army Motor
Sports Association Rally in BAOR last year.
Corpora] Henderson is due to leave us for
Minden and we wish him every success for
the future.
Staying on the sporting scene, the
AFCENT Knights Rugby Team are enjoying
another very successful season and are well on course to retain
the RAFG (Junior) Cup, which they won last year. The team has
only a small, but vital RAOC contingent. Sergeant Paddy
Stanway is currently in the fullback slot but has been known
to come out of defence and create more than a little mayhem
with good runs down the centre.
Corporal Archie Henderson our
Motor
Rally Champion.
Sergeant Phil Jeffery at wing forward lacks a little height,
but certainly makes up for it in speed and aggression, as many
opposing scrum-half will confirm. Last but (at sixteen stone)
not least, Corporal Trev Galrress is helping to steer the pack at
second row, and scoring points as the team kicker. He also
has to tear his hair out finding opposition, players and transport,
in his capacity as club fixtures secretary.
Taking on the Americans at their own game—and failing
miserably by all accounts in the Veterans Basketball Com-
petition are Staff Sergeants Derek Head, Bob Holroyd, Kevin
Hudson, Sergeants Paddy Stanway and Jim Gauld. Good try
lads—keep taking the tablets. In recognition of their pathetic
performance, Staff Sergeants Head and Holroyd are duly
nominated for the next GMD (Geriatric Morris Dancers) course!
Proving that ' pen pushers' can still show them a thing
or two, Corporal Dave Blagg recently gained top position on an
RPC1 course held at Blackdown. Congratulations are due also
to Dave Tydeman on successfully overcoming the hurdles of
both his RPC1 and Bl, and to Trev Galtress on passing his Bl.
The ' Irony of the month award' must surely go to Sergeant
Pete Brennen, recently posted from the General Office to the
POL Branch of Logistic Division. He almost didn't make it
— 388
to work on his first day as his moped ran out of fuel—he has
promised to try to do better at keeping NATO supplied!
Welcome to Lance Corporal Harry Filtness and family.
Congratulations to Sergeant James on the birth of his son
David Rhys.
Planning and Workstudy Unit
A PARTY was held in 89 Supply Depot to say farewell to
Uona Schrocrs. For the last four years, the darling of the
Unit has brightened our days and sorted out a myriad of
problems for us. We all wish that she were not leaving us but
send her on her way with our gratitude and best wishes; those
who have known her will always remember her with affection.
Someone asked recently who SSM Jim Wood is/waS 1 .
The answer is that he's the first phantom WSP of Vicrsen—on
strength but not at work; one rumour has it that he's driving
round Wulfcn trying to find his way out, but another is that he's
the first indispensable WSP!
Lance Corporal O'Keefe—who occasionally has the time to
be our draughtsman—plays rugby without incident every week
but on the one occasion he played soccer he broke an ankle.
He's now able to hobble to an education course, where perhaps
he'll learn his lesson.
In the past few weeks we've welcomed the staff of COD
Donnington, namely SSMs Kingston and Quinney and SQMS
Cornfield; SSM McLarty has joined us from COD Chilwell.
We hope they will enjoy their tours in BAOR; they're sure
to be better people for the experience!
Ammunition Inspectorate BAOR
ANY illusions to March and the mad hare syndrome would not
come amiss this month. No sooner had we waved ' Goodbye '
to the DLSA Specialist Technical Inspection team when our
thoughts turned to the ARU, or for what is euphemistically
termed a minor unit's 'Administrative Visit.'
The ARU was carried out by Colonel Istead, Col AQ 4th
Armoured Division. We survived the first course, a BFT, with
honours even. The main dish was a surprise though, in the
shape of a heavily booby-trapped car, followed by a much
trip-wired barrack block for good measure. An intrepid W02
Bob Cockburn remained undaunted by all this, although Wheel-
barrow suffered a severe case of indigestion and declined to stay
the course.
Before leaving us Colonel Istead rounded off the day by
presenting WOl Dave Williams with his Long Service and Good
Conduct Medal and with it go our congratulations.
Our gladiators continue to give sterling service to sport.
W02 George Ferguson has been selected for the BAOR hockey
side and Captain Andy Williams has shot his way to distinction
as part of the 4th Armoured Division Team who are now Army
and BAOR champions in the Inter-District Small Bore Target
Rifle Match.
There have been remarkably few comings and goings this
month. However, with so many ' Middle Managers' purveying
their new found skills we did succeed in launching WOl Dave
Young on his Operation Banner tour.
Ordnance Depot Antwerp
IN the words of the song, where have all the soldiers gone?
Quite a lot of them this month have been consuming the un-
expired portion of their annual leave ration it seems, lucky
chaps! A few others have been having a virtual holiday on
Exercise Snow Queen (I'm just jealous!), including Lance
Corporals Ken Meek and Kelvin Chivers, and Privates Brian
Clapton and Harold Kerstein.
Our marksmen have had an eventful month. The full-bore
experts travelled to Sennelager to take part in the RAOC (BAOR)
