Transcription Competition. Our 'A* Team came second in the Roupell Cup
and the Falling Plate out of twenty six entries. Equally credit-
able has been the efforts of the Smallbore Team. Having finished
as one of the top two teams in the Rhine Area League, they
fired shoulder to shoulder with the best teams from BAOR at
Rheindahlen. and came first in their division. Private Gordon
Speed's scores were particularly good. That golfing bandit
Lance Corporal Neil Flesher. won the most recent competition
on our Olen golf course: also among the recent prize winners
at Olen has been NAAFI Manager Mr Geoff Burton. It makes
a break for Geoff from winning angling trophies!
Both the rugby and soccer teams continue to suffer from a
crop of matches cancelled, usually by the opposition. This is
partly due to a reluctance of teams in Germany to travel this
distance to fulfil league commitments. We believe things will
improve following a visit from the Master at Arms. During the
same visit, thirty five soldiers were selected at random to do
their BFT. As we had six failures, albeit under very bad wind
conditions, we will not retain the Tickle Trophy this year!
Our congratulations go to Signalman Carlos Sinclair and
his wife on the birth of Stephen.
We welcome from UK Staff Sergeant Bill McDonald and
Corporal Tony Prole and their families, and Lance Corporal
Roger Spicer. Back from detachment in Canada has come
Lance Corporal Fred Stonelake.
Talking of squash, our team has fallen apart at the
scams, due to the injury of the No. I and the recent posting
of Corporal Dennis Scton. We arc in a relatively strong
league which means that we arc now struggling against much
stronger teams. That, combined with players otherwise en-
gaged on leave, courses etc. saw us come away from the
RAOC BAOR squash championships. This is the first time
in any individual competition that this has happened since
November 1973. (If Records arc reading this: how about a
few squash players?).
Major Ben Cooper our SSO and QM would like it
known that he is now in Bracht Station. It seems that his
arrival was not published. WOl Chisholm would also like
it known that he has held the appointment of Conductor for
nearly four years! (re. RAOC Records section of Postings

BRACHT Barbarians are playing as well as ever. They are
to be congratulated on their fine performance in winning
the BAOR Major Units Challenge Cup. They beat 7 Signal
Regiment thirteen to nine in a very unnerving, hard fought
match. Playing against the wind in the first half, the score
was three all at half time. Our three points coming from the
boot of Corporal Don Robertson. In the second half, Bracht
took the lead with another penalty kick again, from the boot
of Don Robertson. To the relief of the Bracht spectators.
our resident Physical Training Corpsman SI Mai Shaw ran
over a try. which made the score ten three.
Unfortunately
7 Signals scored a try. which was converted (ten nine). At this
point Bracht were under extreme pressure, but to give the
team credit, the only member of the squad to show any signs
of anxiety was Major Jock Williamson (Coach).
He was
seen to swallow his lighted cigarette when 7 Signals scored
their try'- and smoke yet another before the try had been con-
verted ! The match was won by another penalty kick by
Don Robertson, the final score being in doubt until the final
whistle. The result of the Army Final which will be played
against 1 Royal Regiment of Wales at Bad Lippspringe, will
be in the next issue. (Sec page 370).
Congratulations are also in order for Corporals Chris
Christopher, Don Robertson, Roger Lister, Taff Tarr and
Lance Corporal Dave Mansfield on being selected for the
BAOR rugby squad. Commiserations go to Corporals Taff
Pascoe, Andy Green. John Watton and Lance Corporal Lee
Ramsey who have suffered injuries and will not be taking
pan in future matches this season.
SI Mai Shaw reports that we are in current third position
in various Rhine Area Leagues in volleyball, basketball and
the Rhine Area Minor Units Bavin Shield Competition. .In
basketball, stars worthy of a mention are Staff Sergeant John
Dudley REME. Private ' Mac' McCarter and Corporal Don
Robertson. Among those keeping the volleyball team in con-
tention for honours are Lance Corporals Ian Crawford, Lee
Ramsey, Dave Mansfield and Private Yafai.
The football team is also searching for honours. We
reached the DOS Cup Final, by beating 1 Combat Supplies
Battalion three two in the semi-final, goalscorers were Lance
Corporal Dave Gelling (two) and Private ' Brummy' Dalby.
The final was played at Wulfen against Dulmen. Playing in
difficult conditions Bracht found themselves at one nil down
at half time. Shortly into the second half Corporal Albert
Smart, who was switched to play forward scored the equaliser.
Ten minutes later Private ' Brummy' Dalby scored the second,
to which Corporal Alan Simkiss added the third. It was a
hard fought match which ended in a win for Bracht three one.
We have now enquired whether we can keep the cup, as
this is the third successive season that we have won this
competition.
They are also top of the Rhine Area Inter
Services Wednesday League. The team will be depleted a little
by the temporary loss of Captain Alan Singer, who will be
starting a detachment in Northern Ireland soon.
Sergeant
Barry Taylor was another casualty to convert to ' crutch
power.' Luckily his injury was not as serious as the broken
leg of a certain squash player cum footballer.
4 Petroleum Depot
THE Depot organised a Rosenmontag party in the canteen and
everyone was invited. We were very honoured to welcome the
Carnival Prince, Prince Paul 1, to our party.
During the
evening the assembled personnel were entertained by two
sketches from the military staff and several dance routines
by gorgeous seventeen to twenty one year old girls from local
dance groups.
Minutes before the Warendorf Rosenmontag Carnival Parade
was to start the OC Major David Chapman, was interviewed
on BFBS Radio in which he explained the importance of estab-
lishing and maintaining good relations between the Unit and
the local population.

Yokels—with
This year's theme was ' Be Happy." So we managed to
make a float with the theme ' West Country Cider Drinkers '
which would make any man happy especially when we managed
to get some real cider from Somerset
Cider was handed
out throughout the procession. Sweets were also thrown un-
ceremoniously from the back of the float by Yokels made up
from Depot staff. Joe Kirkbride (WOIC Yokels), Frank Jasper
(authentic), Ian Hulse (apprentice), Pete Stankovic (apprentice)
and Gary Dufton (novice).
Pete Stankovic couldn't compete with the cider's strength,
by losing his footing several times.
