locally ' Jolly' only managed twelve slices of bread covered in an exactly measured one inch (1") of finest Oxfordshire Dripping (brown bits included) to gain second place. The winner, a local man, managed fifteen slices; Private Jolliffe was heard to mutter that he should have won as he had managed sixteen slices; at rehearsal that very morning! Thinks How is it that CSM Slaughter's son Richard passed out as a Seaman /Operator Royal Navy this month if the CSM is, as he says, only twenty seven years old ? Exercise Panther's Tail at Thetford went well with Major Graham showing, once again, his unusual Ballroom skills in the ' Noddy Suit Dance' as the alerts sounded. Thinks How is it Captain Fagg a weeks leave and nobody noticed? Why does W/Lance Corporal Cindy Hill (BHQ) spend so much time in the Stationery Cupboard? : Why does W/Private Fretwell hate Staedtler Norica 130 41s so much? : Why does the Chief Clerk, W02 John Watts, dab correctine on his cheeks? Hopefully the answers will be clarified in some future issue. So, dear reader, as the sun sets slowly into the Depot Transport compound lighting up the poor haggard face of Staff Sergeant Ray McMenamin, and in the east the hail and thunder clouds build up over CSM Mick O'Malley (RTW), I bid thee farewell and adeiu until next month, when the notes will contain the experiences of Headquarters Company personnel who have succumbed to the earthy charms of the people of Aberdaron, North Wales, during our Annual Company Camp. 'A' COMPANY. One third of the Company attended Exercise Panthers Tail in East Anglia last month. It is an annual event and good experience in running a Supply Area in the field. Our new training sergeant, Sergeant Avery, is now back from his drill course and doubtless will have individual training in the forefront of his mind. We welcome Sergeant Murray and Privates Barfield and Seymour, whilst watching Sergeant Wells and Private Reid leave on discharge. 'D' COMPANY WRAC. No sooner has Second Lieutenant Margaret Wilton arrived at ' D ' Company than she is whisked off to Morocco on Expedition Berber Break led by Major Terry Mitford. Going with her are Privates Pauline Wilson and Jacquelette Emery. Their adventures in the Atlas Mountains will be published on their return. Congratulations are due to The Falklands Tie An officially approved crimplene tie with an attractive woven design based on the South Atlantic medal ribbon colours on a navy blue background, interspersed with the Falkland Islands Crest. Tel: 0276 63659 and at: EDINBURGH PORTSMOUTH CHESTER PORTLAND BATH PLYMOUTH WINCHESTER BROCKENHURST LIME STREET BOURNEMOUTH MALVERN HARROW DEAL EASTBOURNE Corporal Pauline Naylor who has been selected to play for the Army Netball Team and the Combined Services Netball Team this season. Hard at work is Lance Corporal Sandy Woodcock, currently on a Cadet Training Instructors Course with 16 Cadet Training Team in preparation for her voluntary work with the female contingent of the Slade Park Cadets. Our Officer Commanding. Major Sue Hawkins, has safely returned from Gliding—Exercise Open Sky—at RAF Uphavon ; and our Second-in-Command, Captain Jane Gwilliam, is currently fighting the spring seas on an offshore sailing course at Gosport in preparation for instructing on this Summer's adventure training. Materials Handling Trials Unit THE OC Major John Staples and Advisory Officer Mr Bob Pritchard, have just returned from Gibraltar where they con- ducted an in depth study of APES—(Artillery Projectile, Econo- mical Storage) at least that's what they told us! Even though Spring is in the air and the daffodils are bloom- ing all around this still fails to attract our staff back to stay. The OC has taken Rod Stewarts songs to heart and gone ' sail- ing ' along with our photographer Corporal Angus Beaton. The Admin Officer, Captain Doug Triggs was last seen heading North in his Toyota, complete with camping trailer, map of the lake district and the twinkle of eternal youth in his eye! The only disappointing news is that the expedition our intrepid explorer Corporal Angus Beaton was going on to Sumatra had to be cancelled. Apparently The Head hunters heard he was coming and objected. Corporal Rod Shaw managed to persuade us into letting him go to the RA Ranges in Benbecula where he ran a very success- ful MHE course for RAOC personnel. On his return he was heavily laden down with haggis, black puddings and other Scottish delicacies for members of the unit who enjoy such delights. Other military members of the unit who are rarely men- tioned are Sergeant Phil Brennan who occasionally calls in to pick up football strips and claims, our ' gopher' Lance Corporal Bill Goddard who is busy building his muscles up on HGV2 training under the skilful guidance of Corporal Dave Floyd our expert on Fairey's! and Rapiers. The deadly duo of WOl Dave Lewis and Staff Sergeant Leo Green are polishing their sunglasses up in anticipation of having to run various MHE courses in sunnier climes. The trials team under the trials officer Mr Norman Butcher are working themselves into an ectatic frenzy over the joy of having to evaluate three possible replacements for the ubiquitous Eager Beaver. The bliss of Aldershot training area awaits them, with a voracious appetite. Two of the P and TOs Mr Dave Margison and Mr Rob Jardine are rumoured to have entered into the spirit of the trial by actually trying the Noddy suits out whilst gardening! Congratulations go to Lance Corporal Bill Goddard on obtaining his RPC2 and we bid farewell to Corporal John Bull who has decided to call it a day and return to civvy street. Central Ordnance Depot Donnington VIP visitors of the month were the DGOS and Mrs Whalley on their initial visit to Donnington. The visit commenced with a Dinner Night in the Officers Mess, followed by an early morn- ing call for the General to begin a hectic day touring the Depot, DSM(A) Technical Equipments Division and the Stores Section of 34 Central Workshop. Respite from the tour was provided by the Sergeants Mess 15 Battalion and welcome it was too! Mrs Whalley meanwhile was being entertained by the children of the Garrison Nursery ably marshalled by Mrs Helen Spicer, followed by a coffee morning with the Wives' Club. The Garrison Swimming Pool has now opened, thanks mainly to the efforts of Major Bill Roberts and his committee. Fund raising efforts to finance the pool continue apace and future visitors to Donnington are invited to take a dip, at a cost of course! Don't forget your swimming trunks when you pack your overnight bag. Captain Arthur Brown was responsible for a very successful Athletics Meeting held at Parsons Barracks sportfield. The distance races eight hundred metres, fifteen hundred metres and five thousand metres were dominated by Staff Sergeant Whittington who set a new record for the five thousand metres of 16.42.2. This time could well be improved upon as at no time was Staff Sergeant Whittington put under any pressure and after lap six was running on his own half a lap in the lead. |
