Headquarters BAOR
SUPPLY DIRECTORATE said their farewells
to Colonel John Jackson, off to AG9 to plot
a few careers. Look forward to seeing you on
your first visit to BAOR in your new post sir!
On the sporting side of life we must con-
gratulate the hockey players of the Garrison.
In the recent DOS BAOR Competition, held
here in Rheindahlen, a team known as Head-
quarters BAOR RAOC did very well indeed.
Winning all their league games, including a six
nil victory! In the semi-final, Rheindahlen beat Wulfen five one
and won a place in the final against 5 Ordnance Battalion. With
three BAOR current players in their team, the Battalion was
expected to walk it, but they were held to a very close one nil
win! Also on hockey, but now as Rheindahlen Garrison, let's
report the successes within Rhine Area. The Garrison team
has won the Rhine Area League (undefeated again), the Rhine
Area Cup and the Rhine Area Sixes, taking all three trophies,
something that we don't think any other Rhine Area unit has
done before! Well done to all the RAOC hockey players of
Rheindahlen.
After all this mention of hockey, let's hope
Rheindahlen Garrison's athletics team can equal their successes
in the RAOC BAOR Athletics Meeting later this year. Before
we leave sport for a while, we must mention WOl Paul Sowerby,
who must be the only RAOC soldier to play football for the
RAF Germany Band! Paul plays lead trombone!
On the airwaves of BFBS recently, a team of Lieutenant
Colonel John Shircliffe (Retd), Major Steve Thornton and
Corporal Andy Wilson, competed as Supply Directorate in the
' Brains of BFG '—beating their rivals thirty eight to thirty five.
Let's hope they can continue this success in further rounds!
Also on the radio, Major David Wright, but talking of hockey
and the International Meeting held each year in Rheindahlen.
The Clerks and Supply Controllers of the Directorate held
a lunch party in the ' Balkanland ' to say farewell and good luck
to Corporal Pauline Cove who left us for the delights of Lough-
borough, all the best Pauline. Newly arrived to take her place
in the ' Golden Mile' is Lance Corporal Lorraine Paisley, all
the way from Comms Branch, here in JHQ.
WHY
NOT
THE
WRITE
FOR
GAZETTE ?
THE EDITOR welcomes new contributors, it is your
Journal so why not contribute to it?
Articles on any subject will be welcomed: sport,
adventure, work, experience, humour, fiction—even
fantasy. While articles of any length will be considered,
the ideal is in the region of 2,000 words. Scripts should
be double-spaced type written, though manuscript will
be accepted. Pictures should preferably, be black and
white but colour prints will do—some slight loss of
quality occurs.
Why not use Tun GAZETTE if you have previously
written for publication, why not try your hand if you
have not.
Other arrivals and departures this month we must report:
the birth of Sarah, another daughter for Sergeant Colin and Mrs
Ann Lawrence, congratulations! Farewells to Major Philip
Hawkins, off to 1 Ordnance Battalion, in his place Major Roger
Thomas from 5 Ordnance Battalion, welcome. Belated arrivals
are reported of Major Paul Wallace-Stock to BRSC and Captain
David Longley to AMIS. And very belated arrival greetings
to Major John West, also of AMIS.
From the Staff Branches this month
the sporting
front headlines is being taken up with the preparation for the
RAOC Dulmen Marathon. WOs2 Alan Jensen, Dave O'Brien,
Staff Sergeant Dave Latham and Sergeant Kev McKernan have
all been regularly seen pounding the roads round Rheindahlen.
Our best wishes go with them and hopefully next month the
notes may boast of some hard earned prizes.
Our farewells go to Staff Sergeant Colin Low on his posting
from Education Branch to MOD, W02 Geoff Read from Legal
to NORTHAG and Staff Sergeant Brian Berry from BRSC to
MOD.
Warmest welcomes are extended to W 2 Ray Dewsnap and
Staff Sergeant Steven Sambles.

B R I G A D I E R S M I T H , DLSA was
recently guest of honour at a Regimental
Dinner in the Sergeants Mess, where he
presented W 2 (SQMS) Paul Squirrell
RAPC with his Royal Warrant.
The
dinner was held to dine in Colonel
Hopkinson, our Commandant. To mark
the occasion he was presented with a
Sergeants Mess Roll of Honour written
on a cricket bat. At the dinner we also
said farewell to Major C. Robinson our
OC. He was presented with an outsize BFT Medal in recognition
of the number of people he pushed, dragged and shouted through
their BFTs whilst he was at Bracht.
Regimental Headquarters has recently undergone some
dramatic changes. New faces are in evidence in every office.
Some of the offices have been changed around to fit in with the
new faces. Not to be left out, Staff Sergeant Dennis Edmunds
the ' Chiefie' has decided to move his complaints department
to Celle, to avoid the daily hassle.
Sergeant Ricky Mayor surprised the mess members by pay-
ing for a round of drinks recently. After some detective work
by Sergeant Harry Mills it was discovered that ' Ricky' was
celebrating his fiftieth birthday. Congrats ' Ricky,' another
fifty and the telegram is yours.
Bracht was once again the host for the Rhine Area Rugby
Sevens. The weather was glorious and the teams put on a
fine display. 3 BAD reached the final, but were beaten by
13 Signal Regiment. There is no truth in the rumour that WOl
Randall the coach is posted to Malawi. The Unit sportsmen
continue to shine. The squash team are to be congratulated
on winning the BAOR minor units championships and being
runners up in the Army Squash Championships. The cross-
country team were runners-up in the Rhine Area League.
The golf team came fifth in the Rhine Area Winter League,
and at the Spring Meeting W02 Teegan and Staff Sergeant
Ladley picked up prizes.
We welcome the following to 3 BAD and hope they
enjoy their tour here:—Major Hunt and Major Hewlett, Staff
Sergeant Bastable, Lance Corporal Neill REME, Privates Sloat,
Fowler, Pratt, Dransfield, Evenden and Leatherbarrow.
We say farewell to Conductor Neale, Sergeant Carse and
Corporal Gowans.
Congratulations to the following on promotion Corporals
Rae and Castlehouse and Lance Corporal Holmes.
