Transcription Ordnance Services Viersen
DURING the Easter holiday the unit hosted a visit of thirty five
cadets of the 1st Cadet Battalion The Queens Regiment. Their
stay included a night exercise on Arsbeck Training Area, follow-
ing the usual build up of field and weapon training.
An
extremely good games night was held in the Pen and Stacker
Club which was well supported by families from Viersen.
Much to the relief of the PMC and PEC our own junior ranks
just managed to tip the scales and win a closely fought contest,
following some very creditable performances by the cadets in-
cluding one short lad who could hardly reach the dart board.
One sport that RAOC Viersen does well is hockey with
the team a mixture of RAOC, Royal Signals and one civilian.
The team had two distinct halves to the season saving the best
hockey for the end of season competitions. The league results
were patchy as a result of player problems, but as the situation
stabilised in the New Year the results improved and at the end
of the season the Viersen found themselves in third position.
One of the best results was a three all draw with CPO who were
BAOR Minor Unit Finalists.

LOANS AND REPAIR SUB-DEPOT (RATs). We start this
month by welcoming back to the fold Lance Corporal Jones from
the Falklands: he is currently on well earned leave.
Congratulations are in order to Lance Corporal Jock Murray
on passing his RPC1. Everything he does now is with a pause
of two—three. Congratulations also to Private Jock Grant on
passing RPC2.
King Rat Staff Sergeant Phil Phillips thought congratulations
were in order for himself on promotion to Conductor but it was
not to be; the driver of the one-man operated PRI Bus is a
different type of conductor. Well done anyway on passing your
PSV driving test. Congratulations go to Lance Corporal Ken
Smith on promotion to Corporal and we wish him all the best
on his detachment to the Falklands.
Finally, we welcome Staff Sergeant Chalkey White and his
wife Rita and Lance Corporal Chris Kirkwood and his wife
Pat. We hope you all enjoy your stay in Dulmen.
CDP2. After a quiet Easter, CDP2 are again moving ton upon
ton of stores helping to keep units happy all over BAOR.
Leading us as ever is WOl Smudge Smith, with his foremen
Sergeant Tony Griffiths and Sergeant Phil Walls.
Private Brian Taylor is looking ' down ' these days. It may
be something to do with the Free Fall Parachuting course he
completed recently.
The Mosel has brought out the connoisseur in Private
Yorky Askew. He's going on a Wine Tasting Holiday for a
week. If his suntan is as good as Corporal Geoff Adams' back
from Spain, we could have two more Portuguese workers on our
books.
Lance Corporal Jock Cawley and Private Andy Sales have
heard of the Dulmen Dash, but don't quite understand it.
Private Rab Pollard will explain
REGIMENTAL ADMIN. A belated welcome to our new OC.
Major Robin Lee, from Rheindahlen. He is already into the
swing of unit and RAOC Hockey, not to mention assorted inter-
Platoon activities.
Private Dick Tulley is still flushed with success after being
named ' Best Student' on a recent RPC2 course and Lance
Corporal Max Maxwell is at present throwing himself out of
things in the sky on a Free Fall Parachute course.
Private Mitch Mitchell has just taken over the Movements
Desk from Lance Corporal Scouse Russell, who is South
Atlantic bound. All in the Orderly Room staff wish him well.
The unit football team has done extremely well in winning
the Rhine Area Minor Units Cup and the Munster Area Minor
Units League. In the Rhine Area Cup we played 3 BAD and
the match developed into a fine game, resulting in a two two
draw. The scorers were Staff Sergeant Baxter and an own goal.
In the replay we again had a hard game and came out on top
three one. The scorer being Private Perry (ACC) three goals.
The line up was: Private Deacon, Corporal Gant, Sergeant
Osborne, Corporal Smith, Staff Sergeants Evans and Baxter,
Sergeant Bateman (Captain), Corporal Howson, Privates Symons,
Queen and Perry.
Our photograph shows the team coach Staff Sergeant Leding-
Gallagher.
Corporal Hamilton passing his TOETS in the Military Skills
competition supervised by W O l W e l s h . Commander Rhine Area
Brigadier Russell and the CO Lieutenant Colonel Curtis look on.
In the Rhine Area six-a-side competition the RAOC Viersen
side played six matches, only losing one and gaining a
draw and victory over two major units in the process. The one
defeat was enough to prevent the team from a place in the
semi-finals. The best hockey was saved for the BAOR RAOC
Tournament which saw Viersen go through to the semi-finals
to play 5 Ordnance Battalion who fielded 3 BAOR players
and that Corps stalwart Percy De Souza. In a very hard and
skilful match 5 Ordnance Battalion gained a narrow two one
victory which saw them to the final (which they won). There
were no outstanding players, all eleven deserve mention:
Lieutenant Colonel Curtis, Major Ham, WOl Welsh, WOs2
Brathwaite and Reifer, Sergeants Pickett, Kennedy and Riches,
Corporal Eames, Lance Corporals Pettitt and Turner.
Other players who have represented RAOC Viersen are:
W02 McGill, Sergeants Murdoch, Williamson and Green, Mr
Jeffreys, Corporal Hutchinson, Lance Corporal English and
Private Stanley.
Congratulations to our small band of golfers who won the
Rhine Area Winter League, winning every game they played.
The large shiny gold cup is a welcomed boost to the trophy
cabinet. The team were Mr Horton, Mr Sergeant, Mr Martin,
W02 Eden supported by the CO from ICP Lieutenant Colonel
Warren.
Our small band of marathon runners are finishing off their
preparations for the Combined Services Marathon at Swinderby.
WOl George Gormley and Sergeant Phill Ritchie both took
part in the Rotterdam marathon and finished well in two
hours forty minutes and two hours fifty three minutes respectively.
Congratulations to Corporal Jimmy and Hazel McNiven
on the birth of their daughter, to Sergeant Paddy O'Keefe and
Corporal Mike Burgin on their promotion to the ranks shown,
and also to Private Kellaway on achieving his B2. We have
said a temporary farewell to Sergeants Danny O'Toole and
Pete Dawson both off to the Falklands and Private Stanley
who is currently attached to BATUS.

Staff Sergeant Ledingham is presented with the trophy.
