COMPANY
THE Company soccer team^ at long last, managed to play the
much delayed match against 62 Ordnance Company in the first
round of the RAOC BAOR Cup. After a sterling performance
by all the players, we were defeated by our stronger opponents
five two. At the post-mortem held in the bar after the game
the consensus of opinion was that we left the field bloodied
but unbowed and that we weren't beaten, they just scored more
goals that's all! Still on the sporting front, we entered a team
in the recent 6 Ordnance Battalion swimming championships
and once again, in the face of much stronger opposition, put
up a very creditable performance to emerge as runners up. All
credit for this achievement must go to our team of Second
Lieutenant Songhurst, W02 Povey, Staff Sergeant Wadley (team
captain), Staff Sergeant Wormley, Sergeant Kilnan, Corporal
Banner and Private Williams with the help of Lance Corporal
Tyson, Privates Hartley and Luff from Headquarters 6 Ord-
nance Battalion.
Congratulations this month are in order for Sergeant
Kilnan on his promotion to that rank and Corporal Bell on his
marriage to Miss Sian Beach in Cardiff recently. Sergeant
Kilnan's promotion meant that, unfortunately, he had to leave
the Company to take up his appointment as Provost Sergeant in
6 Ordnance Battalion. Corporal and Mrs Bell are now getting
used to married life and I'm sure all the Company will join me
in sending their best wishes.
We now come to the sad point of these notes where we
have to say farewell to .those leaving the Company. In addition
to losing Sergeant Kilnan, we have to say bon voyage to W02
Utterson who is leaving shortly to take up his appointment
as Master Baker in 9 Ordnance Battalion prior to his six months
tour in the Falkland Islands. During his stay with us, W02
Utterson has totally involved himself in all aspects of company
life, from running the unit club, to turning out on the soccer
and rugby fields at his, dare I say it, veteran stage. A sad
loss, he will be grealy missed as we say all the best for the
future.
Of course, having to bid farewell means we also extend a
warm welcome to their replacements—W02 Cummings and
Corporal Coney. W02 Cummings joins us on promotion from
the Bakery Branch of the Employment Training School at
Blackdown whilst Corporal Coney has arrived on an inter-
company posting from 63 Ordnance Company. Also joining
us this month is Staff Sergeant Wormley who has arrived to
replace Staff Sergeant Wadley. Anyway, to all our new arrivals
and their families, we hope your' stay with us is a long and
happy one.
We have said fond farewells to Corporal Stutty Sutcliffe
and Corporal Prof Gray belated thanks to you both. Sergeant
Ken Williams left us last month on promotion to 15 Field
Workshop, well done Ken.
It only remains to say farewell to WOl Ken Blackwell on
departure to ciwie street, the Army will now have a surplus of
' Red Lead.' You may be interested that our honorary RAOC
Corporal, Mr Tony Guidotti, recently celebrated thirty years at
Hildsheim and he sends his regards to all who remember him.

SUMMER officially arrived in Cyprus on 18th
April. Naturally this resulted in several days
of less than warm weather. It did, however,
manage to pick up on the following weekend
when no less than eighteen members of the
Unit took, once again, to the hills on the 12
SU Walkabout. Several training sessions prior
to the event paved the way to honours for two
of our teams; the now well-known combination
of Long, Curtis and Stanton winning the event
in five hours eighteen minutes, but not too far ahead of our
Veterans team of Lieutenant Colonel Elliott, Major Bird and
Major Wright who had to forego the VETS prize to claim over-
all second place. This from a field of over seventy teams was a
remarkable performance over twenty five miles (assuming you
got your map reading correct!) of very rugged country.
This month has, as usual, featured audits on our service
funds accounts, fund raising schemes, Walkabout and Nesam
training and even a little bit of Work Study. We hope that
when the full Work Study team get here they will help us find
some time for routine work. As it is, time appears to be at a
premium and overleaf are the token words from: —
STORES PLATOON CORPS TROOPS WORKSHOP
EXERCISE MARCH HARE was the first Workshop Exercise
of the year with lots of moves to practise convoy drills, night
drives (what's a convoy light ' Q ') and the dreaded cam. The
OC Captain Henty seemed pleased after the first two days and
decided to go home a day early. On return to camp Sergeant
Dave Jones, assisted by the clerical staff of PC and A began the
rigours of end of financial year closing of the CRB. This
clashed with the re-org of the PC and A which after a bumpy
start has now developed into a ' Smooth Machine' (so Q
Robinson says and hopes).
Congratulations to Lance Corporal Scouse Bunting and
Private Ghost Wilde on passing their Bl Sup Spec course.
Sergeant Terry Kidd has started to lay his plans for his
handover with the building of a sleeping trailer for Q Robinson
(he's a lovely lad our Terry).
We bid welcome to Private Steve Holmes and Miss Amanda
Barlow and goodbye and good luck to Mrs Christine Shaw who
has left us due to her husband being posted.
STORES SECTION 5 HEAVY REGIMENT
WORKSHOP
THE impending departure of our WOIC, WOl Ken Blackwell
has shaken our scribe into action, one year without any notes
is too much. A look back over the last year has seen many
changes both in the Workshop and the Stores Section so
some introductions are in order. Our Supply Controllers (we
still call them clerks) are led by WOl Ken Blackwell and his
merry band of Sergeant George Chalmers, Corporals Jim Latham
and Smiler Mark Thomas, Lance Corporals Scott Fyvie and
Billy Whitehead.
Our Storemen are led by Sergeant Pete Bradbury and his
crew of Corporal Robertson, Lance Corporal Steve (the haircut)
Southwick and Private Dennis Warhurst.
Our footballer,
Lance Corporal Billy Whitehead, has played for the Corps and
the Regiment, the remainder of the Section have helped the
Workshop in nearly all their sports.
