THE
RAOC
GOLFING
GOLF
CHAMPION
SOCIETY
THE season opened with the traditional fixture against the
Gunners at Hankley Common for the ' Piece of Ordnance.'
Twenty-four hours previously the heavens had opened and the
sub-aqua experts would have been in their glory seeking the
holes in the green awash with water. Thankfully the twelfth
saw a change albeit briefly in the weather pattern and play was
possible on the actual day. The match was close fought, what
else could be said of an honourable half but alas, this meant
that the Gunners retained the trophy for yet another year.
Was the season to be a disaster for the Corps? No, most
decidedly not. Friday the 13th of May came and went; with
it the vanquished Royal Army Pay Corps for revenge was
truly ours with an eight and a half to three and a half victory at
Blackmoor, a complete reversal of last year.
Prior to this however, Corporal Ian Gray, only recently
back from the Falklands, earned glory for the Corps and perhaps
also for himself by winning the ' Hampshire Hog,' one of the
premier amateur open events of the golfing calendar. Not
content with this alone, he was soon to be crowned the Army
Champion for the third time.
The Championship was played on the links of the Royal
Cinque Ports Golf Club at Deal over the period of the 16th to
20th May, in conjunction with the Army Officers Golfing Society
Spring Meeting played also on the links of Princes at Sandwich.
The Corps was well represented in the various competitions
and achieved considerable success. Eighteen golfers subjected
themselves to the vagaries of the English climate and the stern
test of playing links golf.
Corporal Ian Gray won the major prize by beating Corporal
Spiller of the REME with a magnificent ' e a g l e ' at the twenty
first hole of a memorable final. Major Ramsden and Major
Swindley together with WOI Kearney and Staff Sergeant Kelly
also took part in this premier event although only. Kearney and
Kelly with Gray qualified for the later stages.
Gray also won the AGA Scratch Trophy scoring seventy
three and seventy eight in qualifying for the actual Champion-
ship event. His was however, not the only success story, for
two of our officers members also won trophies, ie:—The'
Grenadier Guards Challenge Cup—won by Captain D. M.
Drury (Retd) and The Royal Indian Army Service Corps
Cup, the Cavan National Playing Fields Cup and the Veterans
Cups all won by Major J. Mollett (Retd).
Regettably these levels of attainment could not be sustained
by the Corps sides entered for the Ordnance and Egypt Cup
Competitions although the ' B ' side did manage to fight their
way through to the semi-finals.
Success then has come early to us this season in spite of
the rain etc but still more could be written about if allowed.
Forty two members of the Society entered the ' lists' for
the Corps Championships and Spring Meeting at Blackmoor
on Friday, 27th May.
Corporal Ian Gray won the Corps Championship with
scores of sixty nine and seventy, with the other trophies being
won by Major R. A. Dickenson (Retd)—the Hill Trophy (Officers
—thirty six hole scratch), Staff Sergeant R. Davidson—the
Scratch Cup (Soldier—thirty six hole scratch), Major R. Rush
(Retd>—the Ord Dep Cup (Officer—Div 1, thirty six hole handi-
cap cup), Lance Corporal A. S. Brash—the Captains Cup (Soldier
—Div 1, thirty six hole handicap cup), Lieutenant Colonel A.
B. Clark (Retd)—the Forbes Cup (Officers—Div 2, thirty six
hole handicap cup), Sergeant J. Moore—the Brownlee Putter
(Soldier—Div 2, thirty six hole handicap cup).

Corporal Ian Cray plays his second shot to the third extra hole
a par five. He was on for two then holed the putt for eagle three.
One could go on but space does not permit, nor time,
suffice to say the faith and support afforded the Society by the
Corps has this season paid dividends to date. Let us hope
there is more success later in the Inter Corps Championship for
the Royal Irish Ranger Bowl and the Army Stroke Play Cham-
pionship.
Come along all golfers the gauntlet has been cast down
in front of you.
To conclude let a reminder be given to all personnel
whether serving or retired, to the effect that the Society is open
to all. Perhaps this will lead to fresh faces appearing for our
Autumn Meeting or at least some of the older ones who thought
their days with us long gone.
