RAOC RIFLE ASSOCIATION CORPSAM 1983 By CAPTAIN JOHN WHEELER RAOC COJIPETITION SECRETARY AFTER an absence of three years the authority to hold a Corps Skill-at-Arms Meeting this year was indeed welcome news for shooters in the Corps. In past years we combined our Meeting with the ACC. This year six Corps joined together to hold one combined Meeting at Ash Ranges over the period 16th to 22nd April. The six Corps represented were, RE, RCT, RAOC, REME, RAPC and ACQ The responsibilities for the running of the event was shared by all the Corps. The first two days of the Meeting were set aside for a TA competition. Unfortunately as RAOC TA units were well advanced in organising their own event later on in the Spring they did not participate in this competition. However, a team from Headquarters RAOC TA took time off from work to compete, as they have so often done in past years, alongside our regular units. The competition for the regular units started on Monday, 18th April. A total of ninety competitors from nine units took part. Unfortunately only one BAOR unit was at the Meeting. I understand that a number of units were unable to take part because of exercise commitments. Though I would have liked to have seen a few more units participating, I was on the whole reasonably satisfied with the numbers, and now that we have managed to put the CORPSAM back onto the Corps sports calendar we can expect an even better turnout next year. The start of the Meeting was heralded by rain, rain and more rain and this continued throughout the first two days. Though these conditions did at times make good shooting difficult for the competitors, (this was reflected in the lower than expected scoring by competitors from all Corps) they had no effect whatsoever on the cheerfulness of the range staff and keen competitive spirit shown by all teams. I was very pleased to see a number of new faces amongst the competitors this year. New blood to replace the old and bold is very much needed and I was most pleased to be able as a result of this year's CORPSAM, to select some young soldiers for training with the Corps Squad later on this year. The Meeting was going very smoothly when unfortunately on Tuesday afternoon all firing at Ash and Stoney Castle was stopped because of a fatal accident which occurred on the edge of the range area. Investigations into the incident held up shooting until 1000 hours on Friday, the last day of the competition. Nevertheless, by Prize Giving on Friday after- noon sufficient shooting had taken place to enable at least ninety per cent of the trophies to be presented, though the In- dividual 1 Rifle and SMG events were based only on the results of Stage 1. Prior to lunch on the last day of the Meeting, this year's champion shot Sergeant Docherty of CVD Ashchurch, led by the Corps Band, was chaired off the ranges to a well earned pint! The Corps Band kindly stayed on to play a selection of music during the VIP lunch after which Brigadier Parker, Com- mander RAOC Training Centre and Chairman of the RAOC Rifle Association presented the trophies to the winners. Although we were unable to complete the planned pro- gramme due to the unfortunate accident in the training area, the combined CORPSAM 83 was nevertheless a success in that it has revitalized Corps shooting and placed the CORPSAM back onto the Corps sports calendar. All six Corps have agreed to participate in a combined Skill-at-Arms Meeting next year. The provisional dates of the 1984 CORPSAM are:—(a) TA Units meeting 14th—15th April; (b) Regular Units Meeting 16th—20th April. Finally, I wish to thank Major John Fox (Retd) a well known personality to Corps shooters, who came out- of retire- ment for the Meeting and did a great job in managing our statistics team. He has volunteered to be a member of the RAOC Rifle Association Committee and we shall be seeing him again at CORPSAM 84. The Young Soldiers Challenge Cup—Winner: CVD Ash- church.
