old Corps Depot. In fact, it took him a full day to get round and pay fleeting visits to them all. W02 Graham Whittington, when not out training for marathons, can be seen scuttling around the car park, looking for cheques. As Secretary of the Chilwell Branch of the RAOC Association, and being in charge of Physical Training for DSM, he has hit on a novel way of making sure we are kept fit. He simply throws a cheque out of his car and gets the military staff to chase it around. Unfortunately, a lawn mower moved faster than all of us, and W02 Whittington was seen later with a roll of sellotape joining the many pieces together again. Captain Bob Manners recently returned from a Vehicle Inspection in Belize, complete with photos and suntan. The Chilwell wind and rain have combined successfully to wash the suntan away—but the photos are good. Other members of the Branch have been seen out and about on the odd occasion but plead pressure of work keeps them well concealed most of the time. Over in ACA, Corporal Andy Beadle is also keeping a low profile. All six feet six inches of him. He recently bought his wife a moped, but one of the sights frequently seen dashing around the station is Corporal Beadle, complete with crash helmet and his knees tucked well under his chin, speeding around apparently unsupported just two feet above the road. Welcome to Lance Corporal Chris Corish, replacing Corporal Rab Wardlaw, who has decided to leave the Army. Our best wishes go to Rab and good luck in his new job. PUTER USERS ANNUAL CONVENTION. PROFESSIONAL EVENTS THE DIRECTOR, BRIG J W C SPACKMAN WAS AMONG THE GUEST SPEAKERS AT THE RECENT ICL COM- Brigadier Smith congratulating Mrs Helen Dearden award of the Imperial Service M e d a l . on the We recently mentioned that the Director was dined out in the WOs and Sergeants Mess, next it was the turn of the Officers Mess to dine out both the Director and Major Ken England. This was the last opportunity to dine them out before their retirement after a combined total of seventy one years in the Army. The WRAC Band provided a suitable programme of music which ranged from ' Clap Hands Here Comes Charlie' to ' There'll Always Be An England.' The menu for the occasion was also specially devised. The Director is reported to have eaten the first course, ' Balles des Sapeurs en Porto * with great relish! Both officers were presented with anti- quarian maps of Oxfordshire to prove that things do sometimes change at Didcot—when the map was printed Didcot was in Berkshire! Major Nick Bell is now firmly strapped into the GM chair vacated by Ken England. Ken has now left us for civilian life after more than twelve years at Didcot, (is this a record?), and we hope that the old adage that no-one is indispensible readily applies. Whilst in the general GM sphere, mention must be made of Staff Sergeant Ken Allen, or rather of his kit (or lack of it). Apparently there have been problems in moving some kit over to him in Canada. We trust that he therefore packed sufficient for his six months self imposed exile in Wainwright. The Parachute Section of 421 EOD Company, having decided that summer was not coming to them, flew off to Gibraltar to find it for themselves. Rumour has it that it was officially classed as training, but what sort of training takes place in a duty-free port? — 55 — |
