Lee now posted to Dulmcn.
How you break an ankle training for a gentle sport like lawn
tennis has not been properly explained.
Finally in Combat Supplies we say Hello! Goodbye! and
thank you to Corporal Mike Cuthbert of 154 FAD who has
just finished his month's holiday here.
Headquarters BAOR has had its share of good news from
M and RO in the form of the long awaited and sometimes
cursed No. 1 Promotion Board listings. Those who struck lucky
this lime arc; W02 to WOl, Keith Betchley and Brian Davies
(Supply), Phil Percival (AMIS) and Phil Wylie (PA/COS). Staff
Sergeant to W02, Bob Bate (BRSC) and Art Matthews (AMIS).
Sergeant to Staff Sergeant, Charlie Bowden (G2 Int), Colin
Lawrence (Supply), Dave Le Page (AMIS) and last but not least
Ron Wilson from Headquarters Rheindahlen Garrison. Con-
gratulations to you all, if you were not on your respective part
of the listing, well better luck next time!
The Supply Directorate team of Lieutenant Colonel John
Shircliff (Retd), Major Steve Thornton and Corporal Andy
Wilson successfully won their way into the semi-finals of the
Brains of BFG competition, on BFBS this month, by beating
a team from 60 Sqn RCT in a sudden death play off! We will
keep you informed on how the team fares.
On arrivals and departures from Supply Directorate this
month we said goodbye to Major David Wright who left us for
London District, Mrs Helen Grant who left us for Cyprus and
Mrs Jean Williams who, at the time of writing these notes, does
not know where her PSA husband is to be posted next! Into the
fold though, we welcome Mrs Brenda Frizell and Mrs Gilly
Sparrow, who both join us from No. 2 Typing Pool, hope you
enjoy your stay with us.
athletes represented Rheindahlen Garrison in this competition
with honours going to W02 Kuester first in the javelin, Corporal
Coole first in the two hundred metres and four hundred metres
and to Captain Henwood with second in the pole vault and
third in the one hundred and ten metres high hurdles. Well
done to all the RAOC athletes of Rheindahlen Garrison who
took part in either competition and also to all the spectators
who braved the showers and gave their support.
Brief mention now of the BAOR Hockey Sixes held in
Dortmund. Rheindahlen Garrison entered a team and were
runners-up again! Three of the team were RAOC, WOl Les
Cheetham, Sergeant Paddy Keating and Corporal Mick Brown.
Corporal Brown has now left Rheindahlen for sunny Naples
by the sea, and on promotion to Sergeant!
Before we leave sport for this month, let's mention the
members of Rheindahlen Garrison who took part in the RAOC
marathon at Dulmen. The 'A' Team won the Team Trophy!
Congratulations to all those who took part, whether you won
a prize or not!
News from the Combat Supplies front is a bit on the
meagre side this month. Perhaps the departure of Colonel Mike
John who has had a foot in two offices (a bit painful as they
are sixty metres apart!) has something to do with it. We wel-
come Colonel Alan Newcombe as the new leader of the
sharp end of ' F ' corridor and hope he enjoys his two years
grappling with things from the BAOR angle.
Some other
arrivals and departures, Jackie Cockerell finally leaves us for
Andover, her home town and is replaced by Mrs Pat Schindler.
Staff Sergeant Pete Newcombe goes to Liverpool having handed
over to Staff Sergeant Graham Busby from Wulfen. We wish
them all well in their new appointments.
The BFT season is upon us again and from a pack of
sweating red-faced grunters we must make special mention
of CATO, Lieutenant Colonel Bruce Owen (one of our three
Owens—very confusing!) who complete with green fisherman's
ballistic cap lead the field home, being beaten only by a pro-
fessional marathon man from E/S Man about twenty years
his junior; must be all that training on the home computer.
Major Alan Glasby continues his outstanding shooting feats. He
won the 1983 RAOC BAOR Target Rifle Championship and
lead the Directorate team of himself, Sergeant Mark Batty,
WOl Frank Lawrence, Mr Harry Holden and (once) Major
John Harradance to a very creditable runners up position in the
BAOR Service Rifle Winter League. Major Glasby also had an
unusual tea break recently when, as duty EOD man he had
to deal with a suspicious thermos flask left in the JHQ entrance.
(thermos flask destroyed=tea break—get it?).
Major Peter Hewlett (Retd) has won the ' F ' corridor
slimmer-of-the-month competition for the third month in a row,
he really is a shadow of his former self; he now has a few
pairs of trousers for sail (for sail—get it?). Another sportsman
proved the old adage—' Sport Maims ' when Mr Harry Holden
appeared on crutches having been engaged in training for tennis.
Ordnance Depot- Antwerp
RECENTLY ODA was visited by both the Adjutant-General
and the Quarter-Master-General.
We believe that we are
one of the few units to have been visited by two members
of the Army Board within ten days of each other.
A social highlight was the SSAFA Ball which was held in
the Emblem Gymnasium. Our guest of honour was Lieutenant
General Sir Napier-Crookenden, who is the Chairman of SSAFA.
A very enjoyable evening was had by all and a contribution of
nearly £2,000 from the proceeds was made to SSAFA.
This event was closely followed by the Centenary
celebrations of the British Consulate in Antwerp, and the retire-
ment of the British Consulate General. ODA were present
to show the colours in the form of a flag party, under the watch-
ful and expert eye of Sergeant Fred Keogh.
Anne Armstrong of Soldier Magazine also paid us a visit
this month, when she came to the Emblem Wives Club, where
she held an open forum type of discussion. After a slow start
a barrage of questions and suggestions started to fly, which
only goes to show how a little grape juice, skilfully applied, can
jog people's memories for the questions they have always wanted
to ask but could never remember.
On the sporting side of life congratulations go to the small
bore shooting team, comprising Sergeant Fred Keogh, Corporals
Steve Hughes and Ian Carey and Lance Corporal Bob Oakley.
They scored a double success this year, when they won both the
RAOC (BAOR) Service Rifle and Target Rifle Leagues. Be-
cause of this magnificent result, the famous four have now been
selected to represent RAOC (BAOR) vs RAOC (UK) at the next
Corps .22 Shooting match.
Special mention should also go to our Ladies shooting
team, Maureen Rolfe, Patsy Oakley, Anna Hughes and Yvonne
Ogden who came a very creditable fifth place in the Target
Rifle League.
Meanwhile at Olen SQMS Dave Hogg has scored the first
hole in one on the ODA Golf Course since 1973! Rumour has it
that he was not spared when he got back to the club house when
the champagne flowed. Obviously the skill and expertise of the
ODA golfers led to the recent defeat of 3 BAD in the Brant
Trophy Competition.
Our tug-of-war team are maintaining their very high
standard of wins, and can boast being the leading team in the
Rhine Area Bavin Shield Competition. Congratulations must
go to Staff Sergeant Rory Penny for forming a well trained and
turned out team.
Stop Press: SQMS Dave Hogg has just won the Olen Open
Golf championship over thirty six holes.
Rumour has it
that he may be taking on Tony Jacklin between ODA com-
petitions, just to keep his hand in.
Arrivals: We say welcome to the following personnel:
Corporal Golding, Lance Corporals Geal, Daniels, Bowen,
Griffiths, Privates Pounder and Craven.
