Transcription Sergeant Alan Riches has just arrived back from Bavaria
(doing a recce for Exercise Backstop for the sailing), then
competing in the Hockey International festival in Holland,
now he must catch up with some work! O well, good times don't
go on for ever.
ASU RHINE
AREA
THE ASA Centenary this year has prompted a short contribution
from this unit after an absence of many months. ASU Rhine
Area is currently commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Derek
Taylor, ably assisted by Major Peter Whitwham, Captain Marc
Moody and CASOs, Mr Alex Mitchell and Mr Bunny Austin.
The civilian element includes many long serving ASAs some of
whom are shown displaying their long service certificates, in
the enclosed photograph.
Long serving ASAs at Viersen.
Within BAOR Long Service Certificates are awarded by
the C-in-C to local employees after twelve and twenty five
years service. Of the thirty ASAs employed by this unit more
than fifty per cent have qualified for such an award. In
recognition of even longer service Ordnance Services Viersen,
of which this unit is now a part, award certificates after thirty
years. Two senior ASAs, Herr Piwecki and Herr Grell, have
qualified for these. All in all quite an impressive and loyal
service record well deserving mention.
Forward Ordnance Depot Dulmen
CDP 2. With Summer Camp approaching and a reduction of
Military Staff inevitable, CDP 2 is still capable and confident
of providing an efficient service.
The staggered return of Corporal Geoff Adams, Lance
Corporal Jock Cawley, Privates Yorlie Askew and Brian Taylor
mean we are back to full strength during the meantime, able to
cope with anything. Sergeants Tony Griffiths and Phil Walls
will make sure of that.
Private Rab Pollard goes to UK soon for his driving
course. On his return, we hope he uses the opposite side of the
road! Private Paul Johnson disappeared for a couple of days
recently. He was later spotted wearing a Regimental Police-
mans attire
Will it last?
Private Andy Sales and Corporal Ron Gant both entered
the RAOC BAOR Marathon held here at Dulmen. They both
finished the twenty six miles three hundred and eighty five
yards course thus earning their medals and certificates. Well
done.
During all this activity WOl Smudge Smith has a smirk on
his face. He knows who his replacement is and when he
arrives
Corporal Al Simpkin leaves us soon for a tour of the
Falklands. We wish him all the best.
Recently, there has been a Romantic change to Helga, one
of our female civilian staff. After her marriage to Gerd she
became Frau Ittner and all at CDP 2 wish her the best for the
future.
Finally we say farewell to Private Tanky Townsend.
REGIMENTAL
ADMIN. Lance Corporal Max Maxwell has
just successfully completed a free fall parachutist course and is
now doing well in the Rhine Area Shoot.

Sergeant Nigel Radford can be seen practicing tipping his
bowler and prodding his subordinates with a sharpened brollie—
in preparation for his posting next month—I wonder where
he's orf to?
Corporal Tom Orrock has managed to squeeze in a Unit
Docs Course in between interviews with the M and RO staff—
(no luck with postings but he did pass the course).
Congratulations go to Private Dick Tulley on his promotion
to Lance Corporal—well deserved (so he keeps telling us).
Some of our staff have been car crazy lately—our illustrious
leader Captain Graham Wood (Sir) has already spent his pay
rise, likewise, Lance Corporals Keith Waud and Colin Lea.
Private Mitch Mitchell is thinking about it.
The Chief Clerk, Staff Sergeant Clive Hitchcock knows
something we don't, don't you, Sir!?
We mustn't forget to mention Private Adrian Hayward-
Wills who's on leave (wot again?)—the strain of the Registry
must have been too much.
The Leave and Movements desk will never be the same as
we say farewell to Lance Corporal Ronnie Russell. I won't say
where he's going, but should he ever get a bit p-p-p-peckish he
could always p-p-p-pick up a penguin!

'*"'
Wulfen by our resident PSA Works
Officer—take a bow John Rivers, if anyone deserves a ' pat on
the back,' you surely do.
On the Sporting Scene, the runners and walkers have been
busy exploring the countryside.
However, mention must be made of Dorsten Marathon, the
biggest event in the Westfalia walking calendar. Wulfen entered
a team which included some of our ladies; namely Mrs Cuthbert,
Mrs Frostick and Mrs White. The adverse weather and ground
conditions throughout made going difficult to say the least.
When you remember that the ladies were accompanied by
young children it speaks volumes for their spirit. It would be
amiss at this time not to mention the youngest entrant, Nicholas
White who at the end of the event clung to his badge with
pride and who no doubt felt a sense of achievement.
A further noteworthy event during this period was the
Braithwaite Bunker Bash. This entailed getting from FVD
to the top of a Bunker in FAD. Originally thought up to
commemorate the departure .of OC FVD the event raised nearly
DM2,000 for the Station Kindergarten: ' Well done all con-
cerned.' Additionally this month two teams from the Station
took part in the Dulmen Marathon. Our first runner home was
Private Micky Evans who finished a very creditable seventh.
We are pleased to report that all members successfully com-
pleted the course and in so doing raised the magnificent sum of
DM3,000 for charity. The Cricketers have been limbering up
under the leadership of Captain Whiteley though early reports
suggest that performances this season may well finish up being
best described as enthusiastic.
On social scene the Officers entertained their ladies to a
Dinner Night in the Mess. They took the opportunity to say
farewell to Major David Braithwaite and his wife Liz, Major
Brian Mills and his wife Diana and last but not least, our resident
teacher Sue Aldrich. We wish them all the very best for the
future.
Congratulations are in order to our NAAFI Manager Tim
Bennett and his wife Julie on the birth of their daughter
Frances.
154 FORWARD AMMUNITION
DEPOT
OUR Fire Officer Captain Mitchell continues to take his new
duties to heart. He does tell me to record however that he most
certainly did not arrange the fires in the Sergeants Mess and
MT Workshops in order to add a bit of realism to practice.
A recent Unit Disco was well attended and was a con-
spicuous success. May they continue to be a feature of life in
the unit in the months to come.
Many congratulations to Staff Sergeant Roy Wilkinson,
Sergeant Frank Quinn, Corporals Dave Loynes and Keith Howes
on their substantive promotions and to WOs2 John Stone, Ken
