Transcription Every Petroleum Operator and pi Officer who has passed
through the School of Petroleum in the past ten years knows
Mary Walker our courses clerk and School clerical officer. She
retires at the end of June and we are grateful for all her support
and hard work. We wish her and her husband a long and
happy retirement.
On 17th June the Officers Mess dined out Brigadier Crawley
and we learnt with pleasure that the occasion was the first on
which he had worn his newly awarded CBE and the last on
which he would wear mess kit as a serving officer. Another
guest was Major Douglas Reed for the past three and a half
years OC School and perpetual PMC. It seemed very strange
not to have him at the end of the table. Douglas is joining the
Sultan of Oman's Forces as a combat supplies staff officer with
special responsibility for POL. He was presented with a water
colour by a local artist and in turn presented a new gavel to
the Mess for the exclusive use of the PMC. (He was not com-
plimentary about the old gavel!). We wish them both every
success in their new careers.
Sergeant Whitelaw returned from the Falklands looking
fit, tanned and—his normal self. SSM Symonds passed through
between 4 Petroleum Depot and Ascension Island. He had the
temerity to present himself as a student on a course. We soon
put paid to that by making him do half of the instruction.
New arrivals include Privates Paul Bums, Grant Baldwin,
Steven Bennett and Carlton Potts potential pet ops all from Depot
and Training Battalion.
We have said goodbye to Lance
Corporal and Mrs Michael Ogden who have left us for 51
Ordnance Company and the good life of Oberkirchen.
Final congratulations to Lance Corporal Paul Phipps on
his promotion and to Private Alan Hames who married Frances
Anne Forster on 14th May at St Stephens Parish Church Saltash,
and to Lance Corporal David Menary who married Nicola Raine
on 9th June at Portsmouth. We look forward to meeting the
brides.
RAOC at JARIC (with friend).
two distinctions and hopes to fill in an otherwise dreary
October attending RPC1. Lance Corporal Drake who arrived
at JARIC in December '80 has just asked for and got an
extension of tour till 1986 (that's correct!), and Lance Corporal
Bousefield has just passed his Al Printer's trade test despite
having an argument with some of the equipment—well done.
RPC2 is now firmly in his sights. The other printer's post is
vacant but is hoped to be filled before the end of the year.
Everyone is so exhausted after a hard day's work that
there is little energy left for free time activities, however, the
SQMS has played a game of cricket, and manages to get to the
multi-gym twice a week (whether he's ever been inside it is
another matter), has helped to build (and move each night—
seven days slog) the scenery for the recent Brampton Choral
Society Epic, and with the help of his wife Ellie continues
to improve the breed of Siamese cats (that's Pepperpot Siamese
folks!). Phil Cridge plays squash, giving up smoking, his radio,
and has actually been seen entering the multi-gym and leaving
(perspiring) twenty minutes later. The printers out of hours
activities remain a mystery at the moment—more about them
perhaps in our next thrilling instalment, from inside the blue
cocoon.
JARIC
I'M not sure how long it's been since an input
from JARIC has been included in THE GAZETTE,
so let this rendition be treated as an update/eye
opener/yawn depending on the individual
reader.
JARIC, formerly JARIC (UK) is
situated within the perimeter of RAF Brampton,
near Huntingdon, and spelled out lengthways
reads ' Joint Air Reconnaissance Intelligence
Centre.'
We are a tri-service unit consisting of
approximately five hundred personnel, including civilian
employees, both male and female. The main trade group of all
three services (both Officer and OR) is that of photographic
interpreter (PI). Of the Army strength, only seven are RAOC
capbadged; the remainder being mainly Int Corps with a size-
able RE chunk. The RAOC vacancies are that of W 2 Staff
Clerk, Corporal and Lance Corporal Staff Clerk, Corporal
and three Lance Corporal Printers.
Filling the posts at the moment are SQMS Stuart Jackson,
fresh from the playing fields of RMAS where he finally got a
mention in THE GAZETTE after years of low profile, the month
after he'd left! He now rules in the title of WOIC Army
Admin/RAF General Duties, formerly a Captain (QM) Int Corps
post, the IE(A) team having visited in 1981 and upgraded the
position. A bit different from the usual Staff Clerk way of
life to be sure, but having to cope with RAF Admin pro-
cedures, duty rosters and the various DOE/PSA elements of the
works services empire leave him enough to do. He is ably
supported on Army Admin (Documentation) matters by Corporal
Phil Cridge. Phil has been here quite a while and knows the
system backwards, both in the general office and on the squash
court where he had steadily progressed from novice up the
station ladder to be considered for the RAF Brampton team
this coming league season. He goes at the end of this year,
being replaced in December by Corporal King ex-Falkland
Islands. The imminent posting order is for Hong Kong he
says, his marriage (yet to be) depends on it, he says! Just what
is meant by that can be left to the reader to determine. The
Lance Corporal Staff Clerk post is at the moment unfilled. It's
at the ' Ops end ' of the building—any volunteers?
Now to the printers, Corporal Kevin Rochelle and Lance
Corporals Steve Drake and Bob Bousefield. All seem to be
extremely happy men. A/Corporal Rochelle is just biding time
for his sub Corporal to come through, has gained EPC with
