Miss Pauline Veaiey, Colonel G. B. Hopkinson and W 2 (SQMS)
Veazey after the presentation of SQMS Veazey's Long Service
and Good Conduct Medal at Bracht.
" when your targets appear, tread water and fire one shot at
each!"
As witnessed by Commander Rhine Area on his visit, a
great deal of enthusiasm and effort was put into the training
by all those attending and despite the shortage of time, much
was learned. Not least by the Company Commander; who
now suspects any offer of hospitality from the Training Wing
staff, having found out that their source of biscuits was the
Belgian bins!
Shining through was the continuing proof that even in
the most adverse of conditions and under considerable physical
pressure the British soldier retains his sense of humour.
Meanwhile at Bracht, the rear party was carrying on the
good work and wondering why they hadn't been asked to go.
Bracht was again the setting for the RAOC BAOR Officers
Ball which was a great success. Major Ron Medley and
Captain Mick Allen who orchestrated the event are smiling,
now that it's over—for another year.
Lieutenant Colonel Brian Allen the CAO decided it was
time to have another of his ' fun runs' around the perimeter
fence, a distance of twenty kilometres. There was no shortage
of volunteers, some fifty took part, despite the distance and
sweltering heat. Congratulations to all who took part, especially
Sergeant Tony Corr who ran it in one hour thirteen minutes
and ten seconds.
Congratulations also to Corporal Collins and Private
Cameron on being awarded Rhine Area colours for cross
country running.
The unit football team was beaten four nil by 40 Army
Engineer Support Group in the Callan Cup, but were awarded
the Sportsmanship Trophy. This trophy is awarded to the most
sporting "team in Rhine Area during the season.
The football and rugby teams are now having a well earned
rest after a hectic season for both. The cricketers have full use
of the sportsfield and net practice is paying dividends. The
unit team have a string of successes under their belt, and
are due to play 68 Squadron RCT in the Rhine Area Minor
Units final.
Congratulations to the following on their recent marriage:
Corporals Turner, Lashman and Private Leatherbarrow. We
wish you well and hope you soon settle down to the rigours
of breakfast in bed every morning.
W02 (SQMS) Veazey is now the proud possessor of his
Long Service and Good Conduct Medal. At a ceremony in the
Sergeants Mess Colonel Bryan Hopkinson the Commandant
presented the medal. Our photo shows Miss Pauline Veazey,
the Commandant and W02 (SQMS) Veazey after the
presentation.
The populations of Bracht was slightly swelled this month
when the following were presented • with daughters: Lance
Corporal Ledkins, Privates Twitty and Frost.
We say farewell and ' Bon Voyage' to the following: W02
Ahem, Corporals Johnson, Crowhurst and Turner.
We welcome the following and hope they enjoy their time
at Bracht: Lieutenant Walch, Corporals Artley, Moffott and
Nairn. Privates Giliett, Davies and Whittam.

REGIMENTAL ADMIN. This month sees a new scribe on the
Regimental side due to the departure of Sergeant Nigel Radford,
to the corridors of power otherwise known as MOD (A). We
wish him and his family well in his new post and long awaited
promotion.
Our OC Regimental Wing, Major Robin Lee. known well
to the more senior and long retired Supply Clerks has been
awarded the MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours List. Con-
gratulations Sir. The shock was so devastating that Captain
Graham Wood, the Regimental Administration Officer fell off
his bike and injured his foot again. Hopefully he will soon
recover so that he can get back into the cricket season and
BFTs!
I must mention ' The worker' before closing. Debbie
Goodswen. There, I've done it. If she takes on any more
jobs there's a chance that even the Chief will be redundant.
Might not be a bad thing!
RSM Patchitt and family have now departed for sunny
Devizes and who knows where else! We all wish them every
success in their new community. In their place we welcome
RSM Gumbs and family and hope their stay is a happy one.
Lieutenant General Sir Roland Guy, The Military Secretary
visited the unit and met a good cross section of the men. His
tack went down extremely well with everyone he talked to—pay,
LOA and one of the soldiers favourite subjects!

VEHICLE DEPOT
RECKLINGHAUSEN
OUR Technical Officer Captain Warwick Stanton is always
away playing sport; when he gets too big-headed about playing
tennis for Rhine Area against the other Divisions in Berlin (and
winning), and then adds another piece of silver at the RAOC
BAOR Championships we just remind him of his last effort at
cricket and ask him what type of sea-bird he is having for
supper. While on the subject of sport we took part in Exercise
Viking Backstop recently. The participants in this adventure
training sailing exercise included W02 Tony O'Connor and
Lance Corporal Bishop. The plan was to sail from Kiel to
Stockholm but due to fog, fickle winds and other malfunctions(!)
they never arrived. Still, Vasco de Bishop reckons it was all
good experience for his proposed round-the-world cruise in a
Stalwart. This unit's legendary fitness paid off in the Wulfen
Station Athletics Meeting when Sergeant Alan Stephens led the
winning team consisting of Maintenance, Storage and Liaison.
A special mention has to be made of Privates Paul Blackburn
and Paul Vasquez who seemed to run and jump all afternoon.
If only they moved as quickly at work! Lance Corporal Kev
Parkin is unbearable at the moment claiming it was his one point
in the shot putt that decided the whole competition.
Private Boris Hincks has taken the plunge and gone home
to get married. We all look forward to meeting the new Mrs
Hincks. The current workload has allowed Private Pitfield to
get away for an eight week regimental attachment with the
Royal Signals. We look forward to seeing him return in the
near future and hope he has a few tales to tell of life at the
blunt end.
On the postings front we bid farewell to Lance Corporal
Bleep Daniell on his surprise posting to Viersen and con-
gratulate Corporal John King on his promotion and posting to
Antwerp. We welcome Lance Corporals Pete Gancarcik and
Bob Willcocks.
SUPPLY DEPOT VIERSEN
THIS month has seen many changes in the unit, with two
postings out and three postings in. Firstly we welcome to the
unit Sergeant Colin Henry, Corporals Michael Brewster and
Barry Stephenson (all their families will be joining them next
month). We bid farewells to Staff Sergeant Geordie Holliday,
wife Winifred, children Clair and Ross, although the family will
remain in Viersen quarters whilst Geordie does a five months
tour of the Falklands. We also bid farewell to Corporal John
Longfield, wife Elizabeth and their daughter Jemma, on posting.
We have also had a very busy month for courses. W02
Andy Braithwaite is complaining of neck twist now that he
knows how to control a golf club, after swinging it around his
head for a week at Sennelager. Lance Corporal Garry West-
moreland is on a driving course. On the first day he parked
his vehicle which was then smashed into by another vehicle.
He takes his test this Thursday, anyone got a spare tank?
Sergeant Dennis Williamson is in UK on a NBC course, which
looks dangerous for us on his return as he should then be an
instructor. Oh well, the easy life is ending!
