Transcription JUST THE MAN
RING ring, ring ring! " 340, Private Harvey speaking, Sir."
"Ah, Just the man. Captain Brown here." A thought flashes
through ray head. How it is that just four simple words can
strike fear into the hearts of the biggest of men?
" It seems," continues Captain Brown, " that the water
supply in SHAPE has been disrupted. They have requested
Ordnance Depot Antwerp to issue a water trailer; you are just
the man to make the issue." So, before I know it, I'm on the
way to deliver the trailer to Supreme Headquarters Allied
Powers Europe—of all places.
I eventually arrived in SHAPE which is the most amazing
place I have been to for some while. ' The Yanks sure do things
in style.' It must be impossible to get lost there because even at
the late hour I arrived, the place was literally infested with, of
all things, loggers—the infamous American disease.

The shoot based on an Inter-Platoon match included individual
rifle, LMG pairs and falling plates. Prizes were presented on
the following weekend at Scarborough by Brigadier A.
Berresford.
A most instructive weekend followed at Strensall with the
District NBC Specialist Training Team. Plenty of CS and
Fullers Earth, and as you have probably deduced the OC, Major
Tony Swift, recently completed the NBC course at Winter-
bourne Gunner. Rumour has it that his dog ' Scotty' has
been fitted for a respirator!
These notes end with a ' last but not least' training week-
end with helicopters. This was a 15 Brigade exercise for TA
Units. The Unit moved into a defensive position on Friday
night on Feldom Moor, prepared the defences on Saturday then
being attacked by Paras by day and Yorkshire Volunteers by
night. Needless to say the enemy were ' seen off' and we're
sure they didn't expect such a hot reception. On Sunday the
Unit exercised with Puma and Chinook helicopters, the latter
using underslung loads.
Finally, the highlight of the year was the 2 Division In-
augural Parade inspected by The Queen at York. More details of
this in the next notes.

The feeling that you are not wanted.
Having at last found my final destination, I checked in with
the Duty NCO, told him who I was, where I came from. Perhaps
you can guess his remark
"Ah, just the man! I don't
quite know how to put this, but the water came back on an
hour ago and we've been trying to contact you!"
Moral. Beware people with fixed expressions—especially if
you are ' Just the man.'
