CHILWELL EXPLOSION
REMEMBERED
A MEMORIAL SERVICE was held in Attenborough Church
on 7th July to commemorate the victims of the Chilwell Shell
Filling Factory explosion in July 1918. The service, conducted
by the Rev F. Beech, was attended by many past and present
members of Chilwell Station including Mr Alec Clark OBE,
awarded the OBE for gallantry during the aftermath ; at seventeen
and a half the youngest person ever to be awarded the decoration.
A cheque for £500, the profits from the sale of ' The Chilwell
Story,' was presented to the parish by Brigadier Berragan for
the maintenance of the memorial.
