9 ORDNANCE BATTALION RAOC
v
22 LOCATING BATTERY RA
THE match was played at Tidworth Oval in glorious sunshine,
and after winning the toss our skipper Sergeant Dave Gelling,
elected tc bat.
The Battalion got off to a bad start losing W02 (Dick)
Baker in the third over when the score was only two. Steady
batting was then called for, this was achieved by Lieutenant
David Bolus and Staff Sergeant Alec Ridley who, between them,
progressed the score to sixty nine. Staff Sergeant Ridley was
unfortunately run out after scoring twenty useful runs. The
next wicket to fall was that of Lieutenant David Bolus; when
the score was on one hundred and twenty seven he was lbw
after an excellent innings of eighty nine. At this stage we were
scoring at little over three runs per over. However, a fine
knock of thirty six by Corporal Dicky Dickinson, ably sup-
ported by Captain David Hingston Jones and Captain Digger
Denholm, enabled us to finish at one hundred and seventy five
for seven after our allotted forty overs. This set the opposition
to score 4.5 runs per over to win.

Captain Hingston-Jones. Front row from left to right: Staff
Sergeant Ridley, WOl Patchitf, Sergeant Celling, Lieutenant
Colonel Braithwaite, Second Lieutenant Bolus, Corporal Dickinson
and Captain Denholm.
We got off to a fine start with Gelling taking a wicket in his
first over before the opposition had scored a run. Four overs
later Gelling struck again, clean bowling the other opener and
the No. 4 batsman. Their score was still only twenty four.
The opposition then staged a fightback, digging in and taking the
score on to one hundred and nine for three. Then their No. 3
batsman fell to Gelling, clean bowled having scored a useful
sixty five runs. They now needed to score at almost seven runs
per over to win but tight bowling by Gelling, who finished with
figures of six for seventeen, ably supported by Corporal
Dickinson, Captain Denholm, Captain Hingston-Jones and
Lieutenant Bolus, and a fine fielding performance by the whole
team, enabled us to restrict the opposition to one hundred and
thirty nine for eight after forty overs, leaving the Battalion
worthy winners by thirty six runs.

TENNIS
THE RAOC BAOR Tennis Championships took place at Rhein-
dahlen. The three days of the tournament were blessed with
beautiful weather and a very good entry which was considerably
greater than last year. Particularly pleasing was the number of
ladies who entered this year and the standard of play that was
achieved. There were several surprises, as ever, in the com-
petition and worthy of mention was the defeat of that wily old
fox, WOl Raffan by Corporal Weissgerber in the mens single
quarter final and the very good game that Lance Corporal
Bobbett gave Captain Stanton in another quarter final. The
results of the competition were:—

At the presentation of trophies by Mrs Paviour thanks
were offered to Sergeant Jones of Viersen who has organised
the administrative aspects of the competition for several years
and will not be here next year. Congratulations were also due
to Sergeant A. Smith on a clean sweep of titles and to Samantha
and Francesca Ham for the delightful presentation of flowers
to Mrs Paviour. The 1983 tournament was the most success-
ful ever and with the enthusiasm shown this year and the new
talent available, 1984 promises to be even better.
RAOC (BAOR)
OFFSHORE
REGATTA
THE Regatta as usual was held in conjunction with the RAPC,
at Kiel. The RAOC managed to charter eight yachts, whilst the
RAPC had four. In spite of good weather the previous week
the weather pattern had changed when the yachts and crews
assembled.
All races were sailed in blustery conditions except for the
sail home on the last day. The first race to Sonderborg was won
by W02 O'Conner who is reputed to have started eight
minutes late, sailed the course, and finished more than twenty
minutes before the next yacht home.
The race on the following day from Sonderborg was a good
run down the Sonderborg Fjord during which there were several
near broaches, by those carrying too much sail. This was
followed by a very stiff beat, and a final run into Faarborg
where speeds of ten knots were recorded by several yachts.
Wednesday brought winter like weather and grey skies and
rain. Two short races were held in moderating conditions and
we ended up in Aeroskobing.
The last day brought sunshine and a relaxing motor to the
start line which was at Mastal our last Danish port.
This race was sailed in light breezy conditions and was won
by W02 O'Conner in convincing fashion.
Prizes were presented by Mrs Carruthers and Colonel
Carruthers presented BAOR colours to Captain Mike Parsons
for his sustained success sailing dinghies during the last two
years.
It was a great shame that this year the Corps did not beat
the RAPC, who gained first position over all. Second and third
were W02 O'Conner and Captain Johnston. The results of the
Regatta are shown below.
