Transcription Paul Dyer (Applied Science) and Tony Noakes (Engineering).
Iain is off to 3 PARA and both Paul and Tony are headed for
tours in the Falklands before returning in January 1984 for the
next Ammunition Technical Officers Course.
Those officers who gained their MSc did so during two
different MSc courses. Major West and Captain Roycroft gained
theirs on the Design of Information Systems Course. Major
Morley and Captain Cross gained theirs on a Guided Weapons
Systems Course.
All the graduands brought guests and amongst those present,
to see his son graduate, was Brigadier Roycroft. Lieutenant
Colonel (soon to be Colonel) Bill Bewley was taking vast
quantities of notes as he hopes to gain his MSc in 1984, just
before his wife Jean gains her BSc via the Open University.
19 Infantry Brigade
HEADQUARTERS
SINCE our last GAZETTE notes, the Brigade Headquarters has
had quite a busy time both at work and on the sports scene.
Exercises at home and abroad have kept everyone busy.
On the sporting scene, our outstanding golfer in Brigade
Headquarters Lance Corporal Alan Brash started the golfing
season in fine form. In the Eastern District Stableford Handicap
he won the competition with a points count of thirty six. He
then went on to assist Colchester Garrison in beating the
University of Essex for the first time in five years (it was
obvious that he did not compete in the previous four meetings).
He continued on the success trail by winning the Captains Cup
in the Corps Spring Meeting and then went on to represent the
Corps in the Inter Corps Team Championships at Catterick.
Unfortunately the Corps Team were beaten in the final of the
Singapore Cup by the Royal Engineers. Our congratulations
go to Lance Corporal Brash on his achievements and we wish
him the very best of luck with future golfing events.
One other sporting event of note was the Colchester Fun
Run in which six members of the Brigade took part. The Sup
Branch complete, Major Ells, WOl Towers-Clark and Corporal
Almond, Staff Sergeant Beadsworth, Sergeant Robson and
Corporal Frear complete the list of six runners. The run was a
test of physical fitness and determination. All the Headquarters
runners completed the thirteen and a half miles course in respect-
able times. WOl Towers-Clark and Staff Sergeant Beadsworth
were part of the Headquarters and Signal Squadron ' Panthers
A' Team who were successful in winning the team competition.
Rumour control before the event believed that the Superintending
Clerk WOl Ellison would also be entering the Fun Run (or
so rumour had it)!
The Brigade said farewell to Sergeant Sanderson who left to
make the long and arduous journey to 32 Ordnance Company
(approximately half a mile up the road) and Private Grundy who
left for a tour of duty in the Falklands. he has since returned
and is now enjoying the British summer before returning to the
Brigade.
Our new arrivals in the Brigade Headquarters, Sergeant Mc-
Carthy, Corporal Sheriff and Private Green.
Finally, our congratulations to Sergeant Robson on his
recent promotion and hope that he is capable in assisting the
Superintending Clerk in his over forties fitness sessions!
5 Infantry Brigade
HEADQUARTERS
DEEP in the woodlands surrounding Aldershot, staff clerks can
be seen gasping, panting and sweating.
They are usually
misshapen and weighed down by loaded bergens. In front
resplendent in yellow and dayglo vest is Lance Corporal Doug
Ritchie mumbling something about being a PTI. Under the
watchful eye of our super clerk WOl MacLaren is a hopeless
band of SOs2, SOs3 and clerks, the RAOC element being:
Captain K. Moules, Sergeant Shepherd, Corporals Phil Cross,
Graham Starkie, Lance Corporal Dusty Howarth, Privates
Gordon Leach and Basil Fox. Lungs are burning and bodies
are aching.as these soldiers push hard to better yesterdays time.
The aim is to achieve a level of fitness to compare with the
Parachute elements of the Brigade and ultimately to attend P
Company and No. 1 PTS at Brize Norton. On this note, we
must congratulate Lance Corporal Dusty Howarth on passing
P Company and subsequently his parachute course. Fingers are
crossed within the Headquarters for Private Bamber Briggs who
is within three days of passing P Company. Good luck Bamber.
Whilst not training the Headquarters has found time to run
and take part in eight exercises, the last being Exercise Lion
Sun in Cyprus. This exercise comprised of Exercise Venus
Rock 83, Military Training and a Patrol Competition; the
Patrol Competition being three days over some of the worst
bondu Cyprus can offer, with eight checkpoints and tests ranging
from section attacks to changing a Land Rover tyre without
a jack. Congratulations go to Lance Corporal Ritchie and
Private Leach who were members of the winning section.
Goodbye and goodluck to the following: Major Roy
Southworth, WOl Clive Walch (on commissioning) and Private
Pete Sargent all to BAOR. Welcomes are extended to Captain
Moules SO 3 Sup, WOl MacLaren Supt Clerk and Sergeant Mik
Shepherd CC G2/G3.
Stop Press: Congratulations Private Briggs on passing
P Company.
Stores Section 3 6 Command Workshop
CAMULODUNUM may be the oldest Garrison town in Britain,
and SSM Alan Caroll's remark on arrival that the Stores
Section buildings came a close second, must have touched a
nerve somewhere. For, the new-build starts shortly, and 1984
should see the emergence of our new mega-stores. No more
the challenge of trying to fit a stores cube into a horse-stall
or watching the waterfalls through the control office roof; and
the list of volunteers to drive the first demolition bulldozer is
over-subscribed. Farewell to Conductor Rod Moor and family
and best wishes in civilian life, also to Julie Evans now in Rhein-
dahlen. Welcome to SSM Alan Carroll and family, and Barry
Ovenden from Supply EDIST.
9 Ordnance Battalion
Lance Corporal Brash with the Captains Cup.
The Eastern
District Stableford Handicap Trophy and the runners up medal
in the Singapore Cup.
91 ORDNANCE
COMPANY
AT last they have succeeded. The Company has gone away
and the OC has had to write these notes himself in the car
whilst travelling to visit parts of the unit 1 Platoon have mem-
bers deployed on Local Resources duties in Jamaica and Kenya.
The remainder of the platoon are ' restng' preparing for deploy-
ments shortly to Kenya, Nepal and the Sudan (No—I am not
visiting any of those places, at the moment!). Sergeant Pascoe
has taken the Company's Cambriam March Patrol Competition
squad off to practice racing across mountains and living rough.
6 Platoon have just returned from a month at Otterburn where
they provided all the Combat Supplies support for the UKLF
Mortar Concentration and on their return immediately went off
again adventure training. 4 Platoon are spending the month at
Greenham Common keeping away from ' The Women' (an un-
usual activity for 4 Platoon) and providing all the ground and
