NORTHAG
WORK seems to have been pushed down
the ladder of priorities in the last couple of
months with summer leave and sport being
top of the pops. Even the football season
dragged on into the summer months with
our gladiators taking part in a NATO
tournament in AFNORTH. Headquarters
NORTHAG were the eventual winners al-
though most of the players were hoping
that AFSOUTH would win if only for the
reason that whoever wins the tournament
hosts it the following year. The team had
a very eventful trip to Norway managing
somehow to lose most of their football kit
at different stages of the journey. To prove
that there are still some honest people around they retrieved bits
of kit on the return journey. Without wishing to name drop
Corporal Dick Chisholm was ' kit manager.'
The NORTHAG athletics have come and gone with a com-
bined team from G1/G2/G5/JCIS, and others, as eventual win-
ners. As an added bonus the Team Captain WOl Barry Quigley
won the individual prize in his age group. He has since been
posted to SHAPE no doubt resting on his laurels. Corporal
Dave Coole also won the individual prize in his age group.
Shortly after the athletics meeting came the swimming gala
which was duly won by a combined team from G4/C and E/
NSSG/Comd Group and others. Whilst no budding Mark
Spitz was spotted all RAOC entrants had a good days swim—
and in any case it was a day off work.
Finally on the sporting scene Corporals Dave Coole, Dick
Chisholm, Alan Irons and Ritch Ritchie took part in the RAOC
BAOR Athletics Meeting at Sennelager where on a very hot and
humid day Dave Coole won the four hundred metres and high
jump.
W02 Phil Careless (G-4) has been at it again—sailing that
is! Under the guise of Exercise Golden Quadrant a successful
weeks adventure training was had on board the RCT yacht
St Christopher III. Phil skippered an international crew in-
cluding a Dutch Staff Sergeant, a Belgian Corporal and an RAOC
Photographer Lance Corporal Ian Sotiris. The ports visitsd were
Edam, Amsterdam and Volendam, however the crew will only
talk about the sailing and not what went on when visiting those
exotic places.
On the Rheindahlen Marches.
As can be seen from the photograph G-4 (led of course by
the intrepid Phil Careless) showed the flag, carried by Corporal
Mick Horner, at the recently held Rheindahlen Marches. They
all successfully completed the thirty kilometre course with only
twenty nine blisters amongst them. Phil has since promised to
stay in the office and do some work for a (short) while.
Our congratulations are extended to Staff Sergeant Mike
Blair of the CTS Registry on being awarded a bronze medal by
the Bundeswehr for his efforts in swimming, athletics, shooting
and marching.
Finally in the odds and sods section we have recently bidden
farewell to WOl Barry Quigley, W02 Geff Garratt (on pro-
motion to WOl), W02 Phil Marriott, Staff Sergeant Bob Besseling
and Corporal Dave Muir (on promotion to Sergeant). We wel-
come in their stead WOs2 Pete Duffy, Ray Pett and Alan Purvis,
Staff Sergeant Alan Hollis and Corporal Steve Billinger.
Congratulations are due for promotion to Sergeant Steve
Farrow and Corporal Jim Clelland.
Headquarters BAOR
IT was perhaps the hottest day of the year when
nearly two thousand people took part in the
annual Rheindahlen Allied Marches. It's be-
come a truly international march with teams
coming over from England to take part. But
from within the Headquarters one or two teams
deserve a mention; there was the Ladies Team
from BRSC, consisting of Mrs Trish Bayles,
Mrs Rona Betchley (our Chief Clerk's wife),
Sergeant Nicki Keen, Corporals Karen Fulton
and Debbie Thomas and Private Janine Broughton, who did
fifteen kilometres. Then there was ' onetime TV star' Sergeant
Nick Boal, who captained Public Info's Team for the fifteen
Kilometres, Nick managed to get a picture into the Forces
Weekly Echo, but couldn't get them to spell his name right!
Then there was the G3 (O and D) Team of W02 Steve Kinsey,
Sergeant Geordie Naisbett (newly arrived from Cyprus), Corporal
Gill Flanders, Lance Corporals Perry Valentine and Martine
Heron and last but not least Mrs Rachel Nutman (wife of
Sergeant Nutman of 3 BAD). Our photograph shows the happy
crew on their way round the fifteen kilometre route. Not to
forget those who ran round this year, among them were W02
Alan Jensen, Sergeant Tom Goodwin and Lance Corporal Dave
Rae who all completed the forty kilometres. And finally a
mention of the Cubs of Rheindahlen who completed and hold
medals for the thirty kilometres march. Well done to all who
took part!
On Saturday, 9th of July the Annual Rheindahlen Inter
Church Fete was held on the Garrison parade ground. Supply
Directorate personnel helped to raise nearly DM2,500 of the
DM28,000 total raised that day, as follows: Flower stall DM500
plus, balloons DM400 plus and book stall over DM1,500. As
well as the stalls, the EOD team of Staff Sergeant Graham
Busby and Corporal Tim Colburn (from Wulfen) were there to
demonstrate a wheelbarrow! Anyway, a good day was had by
all and ten different charities stand to benefit from the
proceeds!
On Saturday, the 16th of July, members of the Garrison
Sergeants Mess held their Summer Ball in the Rheindahlen
Rooms. It was a huge success, many thanks to all the
organisers. It was reported that Staff Sergeant Ken White and
W02 Alan Jensen were among the last to leave on Sunday.
Alan was still able to run in the West Rhine H3's fiftieth Hash
and Bar-B-Q that same Sunday. Special mention is to be made
of the Chief (Gourmet) Cook—WOl Wally Stopper and of
Sergeant Steve Farrow who received another ' Down, Down.'
He's only got another twenty eight to go (DM56)!
