EXERCISE RED DEER, produced some of the wettest, coldest
weather on record for that time of year. Forward, Anchor and
Headquarters BAA all deployed, leaving the rear party detail
of the Staff Assistant, wondering at the marvel of the regular
army element of the Headquarters. Almost non stop rain over
the four day period resulted in some very muddy conditions
and instances of actual baling out were noticed. Even BOWO
in his penthouse at the Headquarters BAA suite was temporarily
under pressure. Corporal Turner's concern for the welfare of
the staff is noteworthy. It is rumoured by those who work for
him and Private Lee-Bennett, that he was constantly at the
heel of the COS, with an umbrella, in case he was required.
Is it mandatory for Corporal Staff Clerks to fulfil the six months
quarantine regulation, on posting to the UK?
The challenge of the BFT arrived, was soundly defeated, and
departed after the recording of some good efforts. On the
lighter side, a car rally and evening barbeque were a great
success recently, thanks to the efforts of the organisers and
adjudicators.
Congratulations to Corporal Steve Turner on achieving
substantive rank, and to Corporal Mick Pays who leaves us as
a Sergeant bound for Ordnance Services Berlin, we welcome his
replacement Corporal Allan Clarke.
4 Ordnance Battalion
BATTALION
HEADQUARTERS.
With
the first half of the exercise season over,
and, the heatwave, July seems to be a good
month to get our feet up, relax, play a
round of golf or do some shooting.
Talking of shooting, we must con-
gratulate Captain Mike Lewington (our
Adjutant, when he's here) and his shooting
team, not only were they the only RAOC
team in 1 (BR) Corps to qualify for Bisley,
but as the photograph shows they almost walked off with all the
trophies at the RAOC (BAOR) Shoot. With a bit of luck by the
time he is finished planning for Bisley next year, done a few
rallies and sent off his application for a Hang Gliding Course,
he may get some work done.
We should like to welcome Major Warren Evans RAAOC.
Here's hoping he does not try to get Kangaroo Stew into our
compo rations.
Welcome back to Lance Corporal Briddon, after a six
months break in the Falklands, he should be ready for anything.
We had better say Hello to Staff Sergeant Bob Sacre, who
is still there, he might feel left out.
With
all the trophies after
the
RAOC
(BAOR)
Shoot.
41 ORDNANCE
COMPANY
EXERCISE HOBBLE QUADRANT, led by Second Lieutenant
Mark Young, took soldiers of the unit to the Austrian Alps
where they were involved in climbing and mountain walking.
Exercise Royal Run, led by Lieutenant Andy Nixon, saw mem-
bers of the unit walking and canoeing in the Black Forest. The
group was based with the Third Battalion The Royal Canadian
Regiment near Baden-Baden—an experience that was enjoyed
by all involved! Lieutenant Andy Nixon was helped in the
organisation of this exercise by our Second-in-Command, Cap-
tain Mike Jordan, a Canadian Exchange Officer, who. was able
to act as interpreter for all phone calls.
The MT Platoon held an unforgettable barbecue that
boosted the Platoon's morale almost as much as it did the local
brewery's profits! It was at this party, though, that we said
goodbye to Sergeant ' T a p ' Tapper and his wife Sue, who have
both been loyal and hardworking members of the unit; we
wish them good luck with their new posting to Bracht.
A warm welcome to new arrivals Lance Corporal Mason,
Privates Nott and Hudson. Finally, congratulations are also in
order for Lance Corporal Parsons on his marriage, and our
good wishes for the future go to him and his wife.
Stop Press: Many congratulations to Private and Mrs Gibson
on the birth of a bouncing baby girl.
Brigadier Paviour presents Corporal Arrowsmith of 4 Ordnance
Battalion with the cup for the Champion Shot overall at the
BAOR Shoot.
42 ORDNANCE
COMPANY
THE Company was split in two for Summer Camp—' Leave
Training Period'—which was held at a picturesque site at
Meschede in the Saurland where the Company conducted Ad-
venture Training under the eagle eyes of Second Lieutenant
Astley, the Canoe/Water Sports Expert, Sergeant Graham Ford
our budding mountaineer, Corporal Alan Kelly of Hill Walking
fame and Private Shaun Gilman the Company PTI who did
his best to improve the Companys fitness during the two weeks.
Meanwhile Staff Sergeant Roy Northcott led his admin team
consisting of Lance Corporal Tom Kelly M,T/Barman, Lance
Corporal Scuff Williams our newly qualified 'A' grade medic,
Lance Corporal Gary Rowley and Private Nigel Ellis our
cook and Craftsman Carl Watson IC generators.
The Company team, led by Second Lieutenant Duncan
Gibbons, did well in the Connaught Shield, a March, Shoot-
ing, Fitness and First Aid Competition held under the auspices
of Headquarters Minden Garrison. Staff Sergeant Pete Lear-
mouth has also been training the Nijmegen Marching Team for
the forthcoming event, he reports that his team are in good
order and have been issued with back legs for the event. Con-
gratulations are due to the team for successfully winning the
Cup at the Detmold Volkslauf.
Socially, the Company Summer Ball was held in the Unit
Club, Sergeant Dave Woolacott was reported to the Monopolies
Commission after the raffle! Seriously though the evening was
a huge success, however, Staff Sergeant Ron Mansfield's guest,
the Scandanavian Disco Dancer, mysteriously didn't turn up!
Only one escapee has been successful since our last notes
Lance Corporal Phil Hoare last seen heading in the direction
of 6 Ordnance Battalion. We have also welcomed Lance
Corporal Bob Stewart from 11 Ordnance Company, he arrived
on the evening of the Summer Ball and managed to win a raffle
prize.
Congratulations on 'A' gradings on BI Sup Con Courses
are due to Lance Corporals Jock Martin (his second 'A' grading
this year) and Steve Walton.
