Goodbyes also go to the following and their families: Captain (OEO) Roy Munce, Mr Krish Lalla ASFC—off to sunny Cyprus—Sergeant Wurzle Phelps—off to the not so sunny Falk- lands—WOl John Robson, Staff Sergeant Alan Schiller and Corporal Tony Blount, all returning to UK postings. Their lucky replacements are: Captain (OEO) Pat Mackey, Mr Derek Barker ASFC, Lieutenant Alan Goldie (temporary attachment), Staff Sergeant Dave Brookes, Corporals Jock Gandy and Terry Day, and—almost here—Staff Sergeant Parker and Corporal Bristeir. Welcome to Hong Kong. Composite Ordnance Depot- Hong Kong OUR Admin Officer, Major John Livingstone, started the period of these notes with a complete hat trick of sinkings. First he was in the Depot crew which sank when only one quarter of the way along the annual Dragon Boat race course. Next came a board sailing course, spent more under than above water, and finally, while acting as ferryman for the Officers Mess Junk and Beach Trip, he sank the outboard dinghy—complete with barbeque stand! At least he, WOl Dennis Balsdon, Sergeant Dave Chippindale with Corporals Sid Griffiths and Pete Drabble managed to stay afloat for a whole week in July on board Her Majesty's Yacht White Dragon, so there's hope yet. Captain Ken Jackson, refreshed by his three months in UK, has added dinghies to his board sailing interests, and now leads a ' sizeable' group of unit personnel off to the Gordon Hard Boat Club each week. Watch this space for news of the HK regatta! We now have three motor boats in addition to our Junk, plus eight canoes and five sailboards—a maritime depot? All will be much used at our forthcoming summer camp. The mosquitoes, cockroaches and myriad other boarders in our Ops Room have been disturbed twice now that we are into summer and the typhoon season. The first time, early in July, was for a Landslip Red alert, following heavy rains and flood- ing, and, more recently, for Typhoon Vera. Luckily Vera ' veered' before reaching Hong Kong and we were able to BATUS THE Company has recently staged a successful B-B-Q which was enjoyed by all. Various celebrities, namely OC Major Andy Collis' and our WOs set themselves up as wet sponge targets which was a challenge taken up by most of the company. It is the time of the year that our first batch of temporary staff go home and we shall wish them well on their upcoming mug- out. We welcome the new batch to the prairies and are sure they will enjoy themselves as much as the outgoing TS. We say farewell to several permanent staff and their families and wish them all the best for the future. Those leaving are WOl Len Goodenough, W02 Brian Frater, Sergeants Don Madin and Laurie Watson. We welcome to the fold WOl Dave Barraclough, W02 Barry Fisk, Sergeant Dave Ferrier and Corporal Don Tutor and their families. We don't know what they did wrong but hope they will enjoy themselves. First of all congratulations to WOl (Conductor) John Lawrence on his appointment to that prestigeous position. Sergeant John Nutman has kindly returned from leave at last to help out Sergeant Dick Partridge with Ammunition and Range duties. Corporal Smudge Smith has decided with the OCs help to give up drinking, smoking, in fact all the pleasures of life in an effort to pass his BFT and Corporal Paul Marson is still busily chasing our temporary staff with a fistful of AF G252's. We say farewell to four of those temporary staff, Privates Jock Ainsworth, Geordie Rutherford, Charlie Stanley, and Tommo Tomlinson and are glad to hear they enjoyed their tours. It has again come to light that Staff Sergeant Stu Reid, NCO IC POL, has yet again run out of gas (petrol if your not canadianised) on his long two mile drive home. But let's face it if Stu can't fix the POL account nobody can ! RAOC in the Falklands Photo Staff Sergeant Griffiths. The COD Hong Kong tennis t e a m , Championship. winners of the 1983 remove typhoon shutters and come out of our bolt holes after a wet, hot and very uncomfortable weekend. Sporting life saw the annual tournaments of six-a-side cricket, swimming and volleyball concluded. Overall winners of the volleyball were the firemen of 125 Army Fire Brigade (Stone- cutters), who were awarded the ' Lalla Cup,' while the unit cup was won by the ICP team led by W 2 Dave Allport. The cricket tournament—a day long affair—was won by a combined team from ICP, DPO and QMs, while the very recent swimming gala will be reported on in the next GAZETTE notes. However, to lessen the suspense for ex-members of the unit, Vehicle Group did just manage to beat Stores Group this year. Our photograph this month shows our cup winners from the British Forces Hong Kong Tennis Championships—Mrs Molly Keating, Mrs Anne Davison, W02 Alan Coulbeck, Staff Sergeant Spook Anderson, Sergeants Taff Davies and Alec Ramage— who between them returned two more silver cups to the unit. Congratulations are in order for: Corporal Neil Stevens and his wife Ann on the b'rth of their daughter—a daughter too for Sergeant and Mrs Ho Kam Hung. To Mr Wong Chu of RSG on the award of the CBFs Testimonial, to WOl Mai Dodd on his promotion and to Staff Sergeant Ken Ray and Corporal Sammy Strang who have left us on promotion. Good luck to you and your families in BAOR. — LOGISTIC BATTALION HEADQUARTERS. Last month you heard about the Headquarters and Orderly Room, this month it is the turn - ^ o ^ . ::^^ of the Quartermaster's Department. Cap- yy/J^l^Sj tain John Cross, having made the climb ~C/" / down from aeroplanes to boats and vehicles and MHE, leads an otherwise entirely RAOC team plus, of course, the ACC staff. Attempts are now being made to start to make sense of the domestic side of the Battalion—the depot aspects having been well taken care of since the end of the war though not much progress has been made in the way in which we operate or the facilities. We have lost CQMS Bill Gibson to Viersen, Sergeant John Gilfoyle to the Depot, Corporal ' Geordie' Bromilow to 9 Ordnance Battalion and Corporal Scouse Lynam (who we let go slightly early as we had had enough) to the Depot, also Lance Corporal Keith Terrell, who was our Vehicle Specialist though he actually did Rations and Accommodation, back to Ash- church. We welcome CQMS Dennis Price, Sergeant Ken Ellis- Rijs, Corporal Billy Lumb and Lance Corporal John Duncan. We are keeping for a bit RQMS Pete Ingham (though he is away at the moment in South Georgia) and Corporal David Mc- Guinness. In Battalion Headquarters we expect to lose soon Major Bryan Thompson to COD Bicester and also Captain John Bourton to LE(A). There will be another cap badge in the Headquarters when Captain Opie arrives (REME) to replace Captain Bourton, Major Thompson's replacement will be Major Moore RCT. *£ 157 — |
