EXERCISE SILVER HAWK
{Continued from page 128.)
THURSDAY 5TH MAY—DAY 11
GENERAL air of enthusiasm and excitement. Mass crew shave
and clean up ready for our mid-morning date with the outside
world. No wonder ships, even tugs, are of the female gender.
' Jackman' arrived and set to with her heaving line. After
much heaving, the double towing hawser was lifted aboard and
secured to all available winches from stem to stern. When the
strain was taken up, ' Soldier' moved sweetly in the flat water
created by the tow. Speed up to eight knots.
FRIDAY 6TH MAY—DAY 12
ON we surge through dense fog—typical Newfoundland Grand
Banks pea-souper. For most of the time ' Jackman ' is totally
invisible. Still heavy seas and, although not raining, everything
is soaking wet. The mist pours off the main boom as though
through a tap. Tow had to be halted to repair the port fairlead
which was damaged when the hawser was brought aboard. The
wind was so strong that 'Soldier' would not slop—just ploughed
on towards ' Jackman' causing the hawser to dip under the
yacht—not a healthy position. However, the repair was made
and the tow resumed. ' Jackman ' reported iceberg danger—just
to keep us on our toes!
SATURDAY 7TH MAY—DAY 13
GRAVEYARD WATCH the most cold and wet four hours ever
endured. Rain added to the interest. However, land now in
sight. Rain stopped, as if to herald the end of our journey,
as we glided in through the entrance to St John's. The tow
was broken, adventure was over—this time.
Postscript. A new rudder had to be manufactured and
flown out from UK, the repair taking too long for most of the
crew to be able to wait. 1 therefore flew back home. Yet
again the mission was not completed, but third time just has to
be lucky. ' British Soldier' finally arrived in UK on Thursday,
9th June, with a crew of seven, having experienced worse
weather than ours, although that leg was numbered 12A!
Under Tow.
Statistics: Total distance logged fifteen hundred and
thirteen miles, total time at sea twelve days six hours, distance
towed three hundred and fifty miles, maximum wind force eight.
