The DCOS with Lance Corporal Hinks and Private Hayes after the
presentation.
TWO young West Moors-based soldiers, who risked their lives
to stop petrol leaks from floating containers holding tens of
thousands of gallons of fuel in the icy water of the Falklands,
have been presented with Falklands Commendation Certificates.
In the first incident last November, Private Lee Hayes,
smelt fuel leaking from the rubber containers floating off Port
Stanley during a gale. Realising the risk of a fireball and the
danger to lives and property Private Hayes waded into the freez-
ing water to investigate. Despite the danger of being swept away
and the irritation from the fumes he returned to the water a
second time with a cap to plug the leak. Due to his speedy
and courageous action in the face of considerable personal
danger, says the commendation, only a small quantity of fuel
was lost and the danger was quickly past.
In the second incident earlier this year a dracone containing
one hundred thousand gallons of fuel broke free from its moor-
ings in Port Stanley Harbour during a gale. It was essential that
it was moved by tug away from the shore where it was in
danger of rupturing. Throughout Lance Corporal, then Private
Neil Hinks, stayed on board the dracone helping to secure tow-
ing and mooring lines.
Conditions were appalling throughout, says the commenda-
tion, and there was a very real danger that lives could be lost.
Private Hinks showed great calmness and determination through-
out and undoubtedly played an extremely important part in the
operation's success. (See also page 185.)
