TENNIS
REMEMBERED
MAJOR A. A. R.C. EMMETT (Retd) writes: —
After service throughout the war, in RAOC, I finally
retired from the AER in August 1958 (aged fifty six years).
During the latter ten years I played regularly for the Officers
Club Tennis Team in matches, and in all Corps tennis tourna-
ments—Hurlingham, and later at the Officers Club. My wife,
Rita, also played in many of these tournaments.
I joined the Lawn Tennis Umpires Association of Great
Britain in 1946 and continued as an active Umpire at Wimble-
don for thirty four years, retiring in 1979 at the age of seventy
seven. I still continue as a Member of the Association, umpiring
at various county events. My wife is also a member, officiating
at Wimbledon for fifteen years. In addition to Wimbledon we
both officiated for many years at Eastbourne, Bournemouth,
Nottingham, Beckenham and Torquay, the Dewar Cup at the
Royal Albert Hall, and countless smaller tournaments through-
out Essex and the Home Counties.
I was the Chair Umpire for four Wimbledon Finals—
Mixed Doubles in 1963 with K. N. Fletcher and Miss N. Smith
v R. A. J. Hewitt and Miss D. Hard; Ladies Singles in 1966 with
Mrs L. W. King and Miss M. Bueno. Mens Doubles in 1967
with R. A. J. Hewitt and F. D. McMillan v R. Emerson and J. N.
Fletcher; the Mens Final in 1960 with R. Laver v J. D. New-
combe. I was also in the Chair for the First ' Open' Mens
Singles Final in the world held in Bournemouth in 1968 when
Ken Rosewall had his magnificent win over Rod Laver—how
' Open' tennis has progressed throughout the world since that
first ever ' Open ' event. I have also chaired many matches in
the Davis Cup, Wightman Cup and Federation Cup.
Interestingly, I was the official involved in the first dis-
qualification of Hie Nastase in the British Hard Court Cham-
pionships held at Bournemouth in 1977. For many years I
have visited Rotary Clubs, Associations, Guiles etc., where I
give a talk on ' Wimbledon from the Umpire's Chair.'
