SPORTS REPORT SERGEANT ANDY SMITH DOMINATES BAOR TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS AFTER a very successful RAOC BAOR Tournament in which he won three major titles, Sergeant Andy Smith of Viersen turned his sights on the BAOR Championships. The competition was played in glorious weather through- out, and this year twelve titles were being played for. These varied from an under twenty five singles to mens veteran doubles and singles. Andy Smith began the competition as holder of three titles and as the number one seed in five events and second seed in a sixth. As can be imagined his programme became a little congested as the competition pro- gressed but he had little opposition in early rounds except in the Arms and Corps doubles where he needed all his skill and experience to reach the final. In this competition Sergeant Smith had lost his original partner on the second day through injury but before a round had been played and at short notice had arranged to play with Corporal Moiser of 3 BAD (a relatively inexperienced player). To the credit of both players they fought through to the final where they were defeated by the defending champions from the Royal Army Pay Corps. At this stage our hero still had a lot of tennis to play and though he was number one seed in the veterans singles he decided to withdraw at the semi-final stage as the final was set to be a re-run of the open singles against Major Clyde Aylin of Headquarters BAOR. On finals day Andy Smith found himself playing in four events and beginning at lunchtime and ending in the early evening he proceeded to win them all! ANGLING IN RAOC BAOR Angling Squad 1983. MINOR BAOR 1983 saw the BAOR Inter Corps Championships and the RAOC Individual Championships being fished in successive weeks. The BAOR Corps competition, organised by the Royal Artillery, was held on the River Lippe at Hamm. Eighteen teams, represented by ninety of the best known anglers in BAOR, competed for the Army BAOR Trophy. The Corps represented by a very strong squad, formed through the hard work and expertise of Sergeant Bill Richards of 5 Ordnance Battalion. The match was fished on a very hot, sultry day. Despite an extremely bad draw (peg No. 5) the Corps team put in a very creditable performance. The first three teams in the com- petition were pegged 15, 17 and 16 respectively. One consolation was that the Corps team amassed the heaviest weight of the day, 33,225 grammes, but the section points system pushed them into fourth overall place behind the Royal Engineers, the 1982 champions. Notable performances on the day were by Staff Sergeant Scobie Kirtley (154 FAD) who achieved 'A' Section first and second overall, W02 Lew Bowker ' C ' Section second and eighth overall and Sergeant Bill Richards ' E ' Section fourth and thirteenth overall. The Corps ' B ' and ' C ' teams finished fourteenth and fifteenth respectively. The following week saw Corps BAOR anglers congregating at the Kappelle Haven, Wesel for our own individual champion- ships. This event was organised by Dulmen Towers Angling Club under the supervision of Staff Sergeant Ian Davies. Once again the weather held and despite a blustery wind the conditions were perfect for a good days fishing. With the results of the draw known, the favourites for the title of Corps BAOR Champion became a race between Richards, Kirtley and Bowker. However, with Bowker bumping bream and Kirtley fishing his stick float upside down it was left to Sergeant John Fryer to nip in with a ten kilogram plus catch, to take second place and offer the only serious challenge to Sergeant Bill Richards, the eventual winner. Everyone complimented the Dulmen Towers Angling Club on organising an excellent competition.
