THE Duke of York's School is a modern boarding school for the sons of Officers and Soldiers, serving or retired, who have a minimum of four years service in the Regular Army. The School was founded in Chelsea in 1803 and moved in 1909 into purpose-built accommodation in Dover. The grounds comprise one hundred and fifty acres of downland on high ground two miles east of Dover and the school compares very favourably with any good independent boys' boarding school in the country. It is very well equipped, enjoying a high standard of academic, sporting and social facilities which include a large modern science block, language laboratory, theatre, CCTV centre, workshops, gymnasium, heated indoor swimming pool, athletics track, rifle ranges and extensive playing fields. The school uniform consists of a dark blue blazer with pocket badge, grey trousers and black shoes. The four hundred and fifty boys are accommodated in eight boarding houses, two Junior Houses for boys aged eleven to thirteen years and the other six are Senior Houses catering for all other boys. Housemasters, Tutors and Matrons are all available to offer pastoral advice and to guide the boys in the routine and discipline of community life. The school provides an education up to CSE and GCE Ordinary, Advanced and Scholarship levels which fits young men to proceed to university or to enter the professions, com- merce or industry direct. This is done in a sensibly disciplined environment that retains what is best of the school's military traditions, and with special emphasis on developing traditional values and leadership qualities. Although no longer primarily intended for boys who wish to make the Army their career, those who wish to do so are given every encouragement and assistance. About fifteen per cent of the boys enter the Services and the pass rate at the Regular Commissions Board is high. Well over half the boys in the Upper Sixth proceed to University. Because the school is largely financed by the Ministry of De- fence, the Army Boarding School Allowance cannot be claimed in respect of sons at the Duke of York's. There are no fees for tuition and boarding but parents are required to make a contribution towards the cost of food and clothing which amounts to approximately £400 per annum. Selection for entry to the school is based on father's or mother's service and on a competitive examination. Priority is given to compassionate cases (about seven per cent of the annual intake of seventy five boys) for whom entry qualifications are somewhat lower and for whom charges may be waived in appro- priate domestic circumstances. Candidates may be registered from their eighth birthdays and on later than 1st November of the year preceding entry at eleven years of age the following September.
